Since 1971 we studied on the possibility of utilization of implanted stimulators in tetraplegics caused by spinal cord injury of the cervical segment. Restoration to tetraplegic patients of the ability to perform some grasping functions of the hand may make them recover some independence and reduce the degree of disability. The examination conducted so far supplied much valuable information regarding reactions of a neuromuscular system at implanted stimulators as well the influence of systematic stimulation training on functions of the hand. This was not observed by other authors using transcu

Twenty haemophilic patients were examined neurologically and found to have varying degrees of muscle atrophy. The pathogenesis of the atrophy was investigated by electromyography, serum muscle enzyme levels, and muscle biopsies. In most cases the EMG showed such abnormalities as reduced numbers of functioning motor units and "myopathic" motor unit potentials. Serum enzyme levels were frequently raised, and type 2 fibre atrophy was found in the three patients who underwent muscle biopsy. These findings suggest the presence of neuromyopathic involvement in haemophilic patients.

The clinical and pathological details of a case of canine giant axonal neuropathy are presented. An 18-month-old alsatian had hind leg ataxia, weakness, hypotonia and loss of patellar reflexes. Electrophysiological studies demonstrated denervation of the distal hind leg muscles and abnormal nerve conduction velocities. Biopsy and post mortem examination of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) demonstrated large anoxal swellings, up to 28mu in diameter. Electron microscopy showed these swellings to be composed almost entirely of neurofilaments. Similar giant axons were found in the central nervo

The hypoglossal nerve (HN) provides motor innervation to tongue muscles responsible for tongue movement, speech, mastication, swallowing, respiratory functions and management of oral secretions. Injury, compression, entrapment or lesions of the HN at any point along its path can result in HN palsy and subsequent dysphagia, dysarthria and tongue muscular atrophy. A combined imaging approach is required to investigate the HN and causes of HN palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) imaging are used to investigate the intracranial HN and where it emerges in the upper n…

Skeletal muscle is essential for life as it enables physical movement, maintains posture, is crucial for breathing, and serves as a major site for energy and carbohydrate metabolism. Pathological conditions that reduce skeletal muscle mass and function-such as muscular dystrophies, motor-neuron diseases, cancer, type-2 diabetes, or aging-have detrimental effects on human health, reducing quality of life and survival. Currently, exercise is the only validated treatment for increasing muscle mass and function, but it is impractical for bedridden patients or the frail elderly. Significant advance

Neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) are an important component of the immune system, which plays a dual role in modern medicine. On the one hand, they significantly limit the effectiveness of gene therapy based on viral vectors, reducing the effectiveness of treatment of diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy, which is especially evident with repeated administration of therapeutic vectors. On the other hand, nAbs is a promising tool for combating viral infections. This review systematizes current data on the mechanisms of nAbs formation against AAV vectors, analyzes the factors influencing their …

We examined a case of congenital idiopathic megaesophagus (CIM) in a 5-wk-old female Gordon Setter puppy by means of contrast radiography, autopsy, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry. Clinical and radiologic findings included weight stagnation and marked generalized esophageal dilation with ventral displacement of the heart and lungs. These findings were confirmed at autopsy, and segments of the thoracic esophagus were sampled for histopathology. On histopathology, diffuse esophageal muscular atrophy, mucosal erosions, mononuclear inflammation, and a marked reduction in the number of mye…

Aging shows itself not just at the cellular level, with shortened telomeres and cell cycle arrest, but also at the organ and organismal level, with diminished brainpower, dry eyes, intestinal inflammation, muscular atrophy, wrinkles, etc. When the gut microbiota, often called the "virtual organ of the host," fails to function normally, it can lead to a cascade of health problems including, but not limited to, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, metabolic liver disease, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and even neurological disorders. An effective strategy for restoring health…

Hirayama disease is a rare neurological disorder, characterized by muscular atrophy of the distal upper extremities. The occurrence of spastic quadriparesis and autonomic dysfunction is rarely reported and has important perioperative considerations during cervical spine surgery for the treatment of this disorder. The role of the anesthesiologist is vital in the thorough assessment of the patient for the involvement of the pyramidal tract, autonomic dysfunction, gastroparesis, hyperreactive airway disease, and documentation of neurological deficits. Intraoperative concerns include safe manipula…

Dimethylcurcumin (ASC-J9) is a curcumin analogue capable of inhibiting prostate cancer cell proliferation. The mechanism is associated with the unique role of ASC-J9 in enhancing androgen receptor (AR) degradation. So far, ASC-J9 has been investigated in typical AR-associated diseases such as prostate cancer, benign prostatic hypertrophy, bladder cancer, renal diseases, liver diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cutaneous wound, spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, ovarian cancer and melanoma, exhibiting great potentials in disease control. In this review, the effects and molecular mechanisms of …

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disorder characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord, and comprises a broad clinical spectrum. With the advent of new therapies (e.g., Nusinersen) for patients of all ages and disease stages, sensitive clinical measures are needed to detect slight changes in muscle force even in immobilized, severely affected patients often unable to move limbs. As for these patients, well-established outcome scales set out to evaluate motor function do not work properly, we propose measurement of maximum bite force which is able…

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) belong to a diverse class of stable RNAs expressed in all cell types. Their proposed functions include sponging of … ial multifunctional protein. Low levels of SMN due to deletion or mutation of SMN1 result in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a major genetic disease of infants and children. Mild SMA is also recorded in adult population, expanding the spectrum of the disease. Here we review SMN circRNAs with respect to their biogenesis, sequence features, and potential functions. W …

Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are fatal diseases characterized by loss of motor neurons in the brain cortex, in the bulbar region, and/or in the anterior horns of the spinal cord. While generally sporadic, inherited forms linked to mutant genes encoding altered RNA/protein products have also been described. Several different mechanisms have been found altered or dysfunctional in MNDs, like the protein quality control (PQC) system. In this review, we will discuss how the PQC system is affected in two MNDs-spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-and how t…
