OBJECTIVE: To observe the delaying effect of neural stem cell (NSC) transplantation on denervated muscle atrophy after peripheral nerve injury, and to investigate its mechanism.
METHODS: NSCs were separated from the spinal cords of green fluorescent protein (GFP) transgenic rats aged 12-14 days mechanically and were cultured and induced to differentiate in vitro. Thirty-two F344 rats, aged 2 months and weighed (180 +/- 20) g, were randomized into two groups (n=16 per group). The animal models of denervated musculus triceps surae were established by transecting right tibial nerve and common pe

STUDY DESIGN: Results of C4-C7 laminoplasty with C3 laminectomy and C3-C7 laminoplasty were compared.
OBJECTIVES: To clarify prospectively whether the modified laminoplasty preserving the semispinalis cervicis inserted into C2 could reduce the axial symptoms compared with conventional laminoplasty reattaching the muscle to C2.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Intraoperative damage of the semispinalis cervicis is relevant to the development of axial symptoms after laminoplasty. In C3-C7 laminoplasty, however, it is difficult to preserve the muscle insertion into C2 while opening the C3 lamina.

Hereditary canine spinal muscular atrophy (HCSMA) is an autosomal dominant degenerative disorder of motor neurons. In homozygous animals, motor units produce decreased force output and fail during repetitive activity. Previous studies suggest that decreased efficacy of neuromuscular transmission underlies these abnormalities. To examine this, we recorded muscle fiber endplate currents (EPCs) and found reduced amplitudes and increased failures during nerve stimulation in homozygotes compared with wild-type controls. Comparison of EPC amplitudes with muscle fiber current thresholds indicate that

STUDY DESIGN: A case report.
OBJECTIVE: To show that an intramedullary lesion was the cause of cervical spondylotic amyotrophy.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical spondylotic amyotrophy is the clinical syndrome characterized by muscle wasting and weakness in the upper extremities without a remarkable sensory loss or spastic tetraparesis. It is still unclear whether the ventral roots or the anterior horn are selectively damaged.
METHODS: Magnetic resonance imaging and delayed computed tomographic myelography were performed on a patient who showed severe wasting of the left triceps muscle w

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of Kennedy's disease in the Vasa region of Western Finland.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Verification of diagnosis by molecular genetic techniques since 1995.
RESULTS: Within 2 years we have been able to identify a large number of families with this disorder. We have arrived at a point prevalence of Kennedy's disease in the district of Vasa Central Hospital of 13 patients per 85,000 male inhabitants. Assuming an even distribution throughout the country, this would suggest hundreds of patients with this disorder in Finland.
CONCLUSION: Kennedy's disease is the m

The recent discovery that expanding trinucleotide repeats are a form of mutation is a radical departure from the traditional genetic principles of inheritance based on the stable transmission of DNA sequences. The concept that a gene may be altered from tissue to tissue in a single individual or from one generation to the next and that it may confer increasing mutability on itself has provided some insight into the phenomenon of anticipation as manifested by increasing severity, declining age of onset, and increasing penetrance in several inherited disorders. This concept raises the question o

A form of adult onset 'bulbospinal muscular atrophy' of X-linked recessive inheritance is described in 10 patients from eight families. Muscle weakness in the limbs was mainly proximal and developed in the third to fifth decades of life, often preceded by muscle cramps on exertion and tremor of the hands. Weakness and fasciculation of the facial muscles and tongue were prominent. All the patients had gynaecomastia and some were infertile. Two had diabetes mellitus. Motor nerve conduction studies were normal but most patients had small or unrecordable sensory action potentials in the absence of

OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to analyze the surgical effect of cervical spine sagittal alignment for patients with Hirayama disease (HD).
METHODS: Forty-four subjects were retrospectively analyzed for the parameters of cervical spine sagittal alignment. The case group consisted of 23 patients with HD, whereas the control group consisted of 21 healthy adolescent subjects. Pre- and postoperative cervical spine sagittal parameters of the patients with HD were collected; the cervical sagittal parameters of the healthy adolescent subjects were also collected. Sagittal alignment parameters

This is an observational cross-sectional study evaluating gait dynamics in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) and severe postural deformities, PD without axial deviations and healthy subjects. Ten PS individuals with Pisa syndrome (PS) and nine subjects with Camptocormia (CC) performed 3-D Gait Analysis and were evaluated with walking and balance scales. Correlations with clinical and functional scales were investigated. Spatio-temporal and kinematic data were compared to ten PD subjects without postural deformities (PP) and ten healthy matched individuals (CG). Data obtained showed decrea

Little is known about the possible link between cortical and spinal motor neuron dysfunction in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). We correlated the characteristics of the responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with the electromechanical properties and firing pattern of single motor units (MUs) tested in nine ALS patients, three patients with Kennedy's disease, and 15 healthy subjects. In Kennedy's disease, 19 of 22 MUs were markedly enlarged with good electromechanical coupling and discharged with great variability. Their excitatory responses increased with MU size. In ALS, 17

Modulation of beta-adrenergic receptor (beta-AR) activity affects muscle mass and could have a role in the reduction of muscle mass observed following spinal cord transection (Tx). The aims of this study were to examine the early acute effects of Tx on muscle mass, total and myofibrillar protein concentrations, cytochrome c oxidase activity, and beta-AR density of skeletal muscle, to ascertain if any change in muscle properties could be related to beta-AR signalling events. Female Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 33; approximately 255 g) were randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups: control 4 d, co

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the origin of juvenile muscle atrophy of the upper limbs (Hirayama's disease, a type of cervical myelopathy of unknown origin).
SUBJECTS: Eight male patients were studied; data from 10 normal men were used as control.
METHODS: Median and ulnar nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded. Brachial plexus potentials at Erb's point (EP), dorsal horn responses (N13), and subcortical (P14) and cortical potentials (N20) were evaluated. Tibial nerve SEP and motor evoked potentials (MEP) were also recorded from scalp and spinal sites to assess posterior colum

BACKGROUND: Understanding how prevalence, incidence, and mortality of motor neuron diseases change over time and by location is crucial for understanding the causes of these disorders and for health-care planning. Our aim was to produce estimates of incidence, prevalence, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) for motor neuron diseases for 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2016 as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016.
METHODS: The motor neuron diseases included in this study were amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal muscular atrophy,
