A carotid artery reconstruction was performed on two patients of head and neck cancer with infiltration into the carotid artery. To detect any possibility of cerebral ischemia at the time of ligation of the carotid artery, a temporary occlusion test of the internal carotid artery with a balloon catheter (balloon Matas test) was performed in both cases. A group of 97 patients with clinical stage I and stage II squamous carcinoma of the oral tongue, treated by partial glossectomy alone, has been reviewed to define prognostic indicators. Sixty-seven patients were staged T1N0 and 30 were T2N0. Disease recurred in 28 patients (27%) and the most common site of failure was the ipsilateral neck (21%). This study aimed to identify the risk factors of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and use these factors to establish a prediction model. We retrospectively analyzed the data from training set (n = 280) and validation set (n = 240) underwent radical esophagectomy between March 2005 and April 2018. Our results of univariate and multivariate analyses showed that tumor size, tumor invasion depth, tumor differentiation and lymphovascular invasion were significantly correlated with LNM. Incorporating these 4 variables above, model A achieved AUC of 0.765

BACKGROUND: Acute oral mucositis is associated with pain and impaired swallowing. Little information is available on the effects of chronic mucositis on swallowing.
METHODS: Sixty patients treated for cancer of the head and neck were examined during the first year after their cancer treatment. Oral mucosa was rated with the Oral Mucositis Assessment Scale. Stimulated whole-mouth saliva, oral pain rating, percent of oral intake, and 2 subscales of the Performance Status Scale for Head and Neck (PSS-HN) cancer were also collected.
