Eighty-five patients with stage II glottic laryngeal cancer were treated with radiotherapy in Center of Oncology in Kraków between 1973 and 1989. Fifty-five patients were irradiated with 60Co unit, 30 with mixed photon--electron beam. PURPOSE: A 53-year-old female patient was treated with combined radiochemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) because of adenocarcinoma of the lung. She died after the 2nd day of the first course on fatal myocardial infarction. The histological evaluation of the heart revealed no severe chronic fibrosis. In our opinion the myocardial infarction was partly 5-fluorouracil-related in this case.

OBJECTIVE: To examine adrenal invasion by renal cell carcinoma (RCC), particularly by adrenal micrometastasis, to determine whether adrenalectomy should be performed during radical nephrectomy.

26 cases of the epiglottic cancer extended to the base of the tongue were studied retrospectively. Among them, 14 were male and 12 female. The age varied from 43 to 62. A 43-year-old woman with a complaint of facial swelling was admitted to our hospital. A chest roentgenogram revealed a mass in the mediastinum. On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, wedge-shaped areas of signal abnormality noted in association with liver lesions have been attributed to secondary phenomena and are said to be substantially larger than the actual tumor. We describe the MRI and pathological appearance of a wedge-shaped cholangiocarcinoma. In cases where therapy might be affected, biopsy of wedge-shaped MRI abnormalities associated with hepatic malignancy should be considered for accurate tumor staging.

In order to evaluate clinical effect of the extensive lymph node dissection for thoracic esophageal cancer, 78 cases with esophagectomy and extensive lymph node dissection were reviewed. Pathological depth of invasion was the submucosa (sm: 25 cases), the proper muscle (pm: 7 cases), al (8 cases) and a2 (38 cases). Incidence of operative death rate in 30 days was 2.8% of all cases and hospital death rate 5.1%. Two cases of extradural solitary plasmacytoma (SIP) with infiltration of the dura, destruction of the skull base, multiple cranial nerve palsies and proptosis are presented. The cases were treated aggressively with surgery and radiotherapy and showed no signs of progressing to multiple myeloma after 15 months and four and a half years respectively.

We investigated in vitro invasiveness and type IV collagenolytic activity of cells from a primary and a metastatic lesion of a patient with renal cell carcinoma.
