Dynamic and interpretable deep learning model for predicting respiratory failure following cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative respiratory failure following cardiac surgery (CS-PRF) remains a critical complication with substantial morbidity and mortality. Current risk prediction models are limited by static assessments and suboptimal accuracy. This study aimed to develop and validate a dynamic, machine learning–based model to enhance perioperative risk stratification for CS-PRF. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1,016 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery. Feature selection was conducted via the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and Boruta algorithms. Five mach

The neural impact of editing on viewer narrative cognition in virtual reality films: eye-tracking insights into neural mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: The development of virtual reality (VR) films requires novel editing strategies to optimize narrative cognition in immersive environments. While traditional film editing guides attention through controlled sequences of shots, the interactive nature of VR disrupts linear storytelling, challenging creators to balance emotional experience and spatial coherence. By combining eye-tracking technology with neuroscientific findings, this study aims to investigate how different editing techniques in virtual reality (VR) films affect viewers' narrative cognition, focusing on visual attenti

Pediatric Syncope: An Examination of Diagnostic Processes, Therapeutic Approaches and the Role of the Tilt Test: Insights from an 18-Year Single-Center Experience.

Objectives: Syncope is a common cause of the transient loss of consciousness, with neurally mediated syncope (NMS) and particularly vasovagal syncope (VVS) being the most prevalent types among older children and adolescents. VVS is primarily caused by heightened parasympathetic activity triggered by emotional or postural stimuli, resulting in a temporary disruption of circulation. Although anamnesis and physical examination play key roles in diagnosing VVS, additional diagnostic methods are necessary in unclear cases. This study aims to evaluate the long-term outcomes of pediatric patients wit

PBM alleviates depression and anxiety like behaviors in mice: insight from local field potential.

BACKGROUND: Depression involves abnormal neural oscillations. Photobiomodulation (PBM) modulates such oscillations but lacks behavioral electrophysiological mechanistic studies. We explored PBM's effects on hippocampal CA1 oscillations and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) in a depression model. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into saline, LPS (2 mg/kg i.p.), and LPS + PBM groups (n = 10/group for behavioral tests, n = 8/group for electrophysiology). LPS groups received lipopolysaccharide to induce neuroinflammation. The LPS + PBM group underwent 810 nm PBM (20 mW/cm², 12 min/d

Trends and disparities in anencephaly-related early childhood mortality in the United States between 1999 and 2020: A nationwide CDC WONDER analysis.

Anencephaly is a severe neural tube defect that affects approximately 1 in every 5250 live births in the United States. This fatal congenital condition is linked to modifiable risk factors, including folic acid deficiency, maternal diabetes, and exposure to teratogenic medications such as certain anti-epileptics. Despite public health efforts to promote folic acid supplementation, disparities in mortality persist. This study aimed to evaluate national trends in anencephaly-related early childhood mortality from 1999 to 2020 using the CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC

Meso-scale reorganization of local-global brain networks under mild sedation of propofol anesthesia.

The fragmentation of the functional brain network has been identified through the functional connectivity (FC) analysis in studies investigating anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness (LOC). However, it remains unclear whether mild sedation of anesthesia can cause similar effects. This paper aims to explore the changes in local-global brain network topology during mild anesthesia, to better understand the macroscopic neural mechanism underlying anesthesia sedation. We analyzed high-density EEG from 20 participants undergoing mild and moderate sedation of propofol anesthesia. By employing a l
