Precise Image-level Localization of Intracranial Hemorrhage on Head CT Scans with Deep Learning Models Trained on Study-level Labels.

Purpose To develop a highly generalizable weakly supervised model to automatically detect and localize image-level intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) by using study-level labels. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, the proposed model was pretrained on the image-level Radiological Society of North America dataset and fine-tuned on a local dataset by using attention-based bidirectional long short-term memory networks. This local training dataset included 10 699 noncontrast head CT scans in 7469 patients, with ICH study-level labels extracted from radiology reports. Model performance wa

Automated pharyngeal phase detection and bolus localization in videofluoroscopic swallowing study: Killing two birds with one stone?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) is a gold-standard imaging technique for assessing swallowing, but analysis and rating of VFSS recordings is time consuming and requires specialized training and expertise. Researchers have recently demonstrated that it is possible to automatically detect the pharyngeal phase of swallowing and to localize the bolus in VFSS recordings via computer vision approaches, fostering the development of novel techniques for automatic VFSS analysis. However, training of algorithms to perform these tasks requires large amounts of anno

Artificial intelligence in glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an area of computer science that encompasses the creation of intelligent machines that work and react like humans. It deals with the development algorithms that seek to simulate human brain and also mimic cognitive functions typically associated with the human mind such as learning and problem solving. PURPOSE: Do we need artificial intelligence in Glaucoma? Glaucoma is the second most common cause of blindness in the world. Its prevalence was over 60 million in 2010 and over 80 million by 2020. It is so common, yet so easily overlooked. More import

The MUC5B Promoter Polymorphism is Not Associated With Non-ILD Chronic Respiratory Diseases or Post-transplant Outcome.

Motor imagery (MI) is an important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm. The traditional MI paradigm (imagining different limbs) limits the intuitive control of the outer devices, while fine MI paradigm (imagining different joint movements from the same limb) can control the mechanical arm without cognitive disconnection. However, the decoding performance of fine MI limits its application. Electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) are widely used in BCI systems because of their portability and easy operation. In this study, a fine MI paradigm including fou

An Al-Biruni Earth Radius Optimization-Based Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Classifying Monkeypox Disease.

Human skin diseases have become increasingly prevalent in recent decades, with millions of individuals in developed countries experiencing monkeypox. Such conditions often carry less obvious but no less devastating risks, including increased vulnerability to monkeypox, cancer, and low self-esteem. Due to the low visual resolution of monkeypox disease images, medical specialists with high-level tools are typically required for a proper diagnosis. The manual diagnosis of monkeypox disease is subjective, time-consuming, and labor-intensive. Therefore, it is necessary to create a computer-aided ap

MEG-Based Detection of Voluntary Eye Fixations Used to Control a Computer.

Gaze-based input is an efficient way of hand-free human-computer interaction. However, it suffers from the inability of gaze-based interfaces to discriminate voluntary and spontaneous gaze behaviors, which are overtly similar. Here, we demonstrate that voluntary eye fixations can be discriminated from spontaneous ones using short segments of magnetoencephalography (MEG) data measured immediately after the fixation onset. Recently proposed convolutional neural networks (CNNs), linear finite impulse response filters CNN (LF-CNN) and vector autoregressive CNN (VAR-CNN), were applied for binary cl

Training effects of Interactive Metronome® on golf performance and brain activity in professional woman golf players.

During putting in golf, the direction and velocity of the club head should be consistent across swings. In order to maintain consistency in swing timing, the cerebellum provides temporal information, motor timing, control of rhythm, and timing of movements. We utilized Interactive Metronome (IM), a brain training software program that combines the concepts of neurotechnology with the abilities of a computer, to improve an individual's rhythm and timing. We propose that IM would activate neural networks involved in decreasing variation in putt swing. Twenty professional female golfers (KLPGA) w

Solvent-Exchange-Induced Dual-Interaction Eutectogels with Integrated Sensing and Gait-Pattern Recognition Capabilities.

Deep eutectic solvent (DES)-based gels combine low volatility with ionic conductivity for soft sensing, but balancing mechanical compliance, interfacial adhesion, and ion transport remains challenging. Here, a post-formation solvent-exchange strategy is employed to reconstruct a physically crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) network using a Fe3+-containing DES. Spectroscopic, structural, and computational analyses reveal a reconstructed interaction environment in which hydrogen bonding coexists with Fe3+-mediated interactions, accompanied by extensive disruption of ordered PVA chain packing.

A Structure-Revealing Tensor Network Paradigm and Its Applications.

Tensor network (TN) decomposition is a powerful data representation tool widely used in machine learning and computer vision. However, existing TN decomposition methods are limited by fixed topologies, which constrain their representational capacity. To overcome this limitation, we introduce, for the first time, an energy-based framework that allows us to reveal a data-adaptive TN structure through the optimization of an energy function. Specifically, we propose a novel structure-revealing TN paradigm, termed SVD-inspired TN decomposition (SVDinsTN). This paradigm enables the formulation of an

Libra framework: Low spectral resolution brain tumor classifier for medical hyperspectral imaging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Gliomas remain one of the most challenging tumors in neurosurgery due to their infiltrative nature and poor prognosis. Machine learning approaches based on hyperspectral imaging have shown potential for assisting intraoperative tumor delineation. However, distinguishing between healthy and tumoral tissues becomes even more difficult when low spectral resolution cameras are employed, which increases the need for specific classification strategies tailored to these devices. This study introduces the Libra framework, a configurable classification framework for processing

Redefining diagnostic lesional status in temporal lobe epilepsy with artificial intelligence.

Despite decades of advancements in diagnostic MRI, 30%-50% of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients remain categorized as 'non-lesional' (i.e. MRI negative) based on visual assessment by human experts. MRI-negative patients face diagnostic uncertainty and significant delays in treatment planning. Quantitative MRI studies have demonstrated that MRI-negative patients often exhibit a TLE-specific pattern of temporal and limbic atrophy that might be too subtle for the human eye to detect. This signature pattern could be translated successfully into clinical use via advances in artificial intellige

Deep Learning-Based Automatic Segmentation and Analysis of Mitochondrial Damage by Zika Virus and SARS-CoV-2.

Viruses can induce various mitochondrial morphological changes, which are associated with the type of immune response. Therefore, characterization and analysis of mitochondrial ultrastructural changes could provide insights into the kind of immune response elicited, especially when compared to uninfected cells. However, this analysis is highly time-consuming and susceptible to observer bias. This work presents the development of a deep learning-based approach for the automatic identification, segmentation, and analysis of mitochondria from thin-section transmission electron microscopy images o

Magnetization transfer MRI (MT-MRI) detects white matter damage beyond the primary site of compression in degenerative cervical myelopathy using a novel semi-automated analysis.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is the leading cause of spinal cord disorder in adults, yet conventional MRI cannot detect microstructural damage beyond the compression site. Current application of magnetization transfer ratio (MTR), while promising, suffer from limited standardization, operator dependence, and unclear added value over traditional metrics such as cross-sectional area (CSA). To address these limitations, we utilized our semi-automated analysis pipeline built on the Spinal Cord Toolbox (SCT) platform to automate MTR extraction. Our method integrates deep learning-based co
