[Analysis of unsuccessful outcomes in a group of pregnancies with diabetes from the intensive care clinic of the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Poznan during the years 1988-1993].

In the present paper we analysed 416 diabetic pregnant women, treated in the Intensive Care Clinic--Poznań, between 1988-93. We found in this period 8 (1.93%) stillbirth, 6 (1.44%) perinatal deaths and 4 (0.96%) deaths in neonatal period. It was together 18 fetal and neonatal deaths, which gives 4.33 per cent of perinatal and neonatal mortality rate. Four newborns died because of RDS, 2 with congenital anomalies (pulmonary hypoplasia), 3 with heart defects and 1 with oesophagus anomaly. Only 3 diabetic pregnant women of the total 18, were under special care from the I trimester, and almost all

Cyclothymic temperament and obstetric severity as independent correlates of antenatal depressive symptoms in high-risk pregnancy: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Antenatal depression affects 12.5%-44.2% of women with high-risk pregnancies, yet risk stratification relies predominantly on obstetric factors. We examined whether cyclothymic temperament is independently linked to antenatal depression beyond obstetric severity. METHODS: This prospective cohort enrolled 161 women with high-risk pregnancies at a tertiary center (April 2020-May 2021). The primary outcome was antenatal depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale [EPDS] ≥10). Primary predictors were maternal-fetal intensive care unit (MFICU) admission and the cyclothymi

Obstetric emergency readiness in rural emergency departments: a cross-sectional survey of birthing and non-birthing hospitals in Montana, USA.

BACKGROUND: Rural emergency departments (EDs) increasingly serve as frontline providers of obstetric care due to widespread closures of labour and delivery (L&D) units. Building on a prior study that assessed hospital-level obstetric readiness using the WHO Emergency Obstetric Care (EmOC) Indicators, this study evaluates ED-specific preparedness for obstetric emergencies in a rural US state, with implications for similar settings globally. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Autumn 2024 involving ED medical and nursing staff from both birthing and non-birthing hospitals. The su

Facility-Based Assessment of Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care in Vanga Health Zone, Kwilu Province, Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remain unacceptably high. The lack of empirical evidence on the capacity and performance of health facilities offering emergency obstetric and neonatal care (EmONC) is a central problem. METHODS: This study assessed the quality of EmONC provision across 63 healthcare facilities in Vanga Health Zone, Kwilu province, DRC. RESULTS: We identified widespread infrastructural deficiencies, including no water sources in 61/63 facilities, no emergency transfer capability, and critically low bed c

Emergency obstetric and newborn care: A priority measure to achieve rapid decline in maternal and newborn mortality in sub-Saharan Africa.

For more than three decades, sub-Saharan Africa has invested heavily in the five WHO pillars of safe motherhood.1,2 Governments, development partners, professional associations and civil society organizations have promoted family planning, strengthened antenatal care, expanded skilled birth attendance, improved postnatal care, and, where permitted by law, advocated for safe abortion services. These interventions have undoubtedly contributed to improved maternal and newborn health and have saved countless lives. Yet the region continues to account for approximately 70% of global maternal deaths

Enhancing person-centered obstetric care: A qualitative grounded theory study on perception formation and sense-making during childbirth.

INTRODUCTION: Quality of obstetric care comprises both provision and experience of care, yet patient experiences have received less attention. Person-centered care seeks to tackle this gap by attributing equal significance to clinical outcomes and care experiences. Individual experiences vary despite similar treatments because subjective appraisals differ. Understanding this process can help to enhance person-centered care in obstetrics. The study's aim is to explore how birthing persons perceive and make sense of obstetric care experiences. METHODS: The qualitative study adopted a grounded t…

Use of evidence from the UK Obstetric Surveillance System in policy and clinical practice: a descriptive study using citation tracking.

BACKGROUND: The UK Obstetric Surveillance System (UKOSS) was established in 2005 for research into uncommon disorders of pregnancy. This study explored the use in policy and clinical guidelines of evidence generated through UKOSS during its 20-year history, in order to inform approaches to increase the impact of future studies conducted through the platform. METHODS: We searched Overton (24 September 2025) and Altmetric (6 October 2025) using the DOIs of articles reporting research conducted using UKOSS to identify citations in clinical guidelines and policy documents. We summarised citation

Knowledge, acceptance, and willingness to pay for expanded carrier screening among obstetric patients in China: Implications for genetic counseling practice.

Expanded carrier screening (ECS) enables the identification of couples at increased risk of having offspring affected by serious inherited disorders; however, its effective implementation depends on individuals' understanding, acceptance, and access. This study aimed to assess knowledge, attitudes, acceptance, and willingness to pay (WTP) for ECS among individuals receiving obstetric care, and to examine the implications for genetic counseling practice. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 2964 reproductive-age individuals attending preconception counseling and antenatal care clinics. T

Postpartum depression as the main predictor of impaired mother- infant bonding: A prospective study in a low-risk obstetric and neonatal cohort.

INTRODUCTION: The postpartum period imposes complex demands on women, making it essential to examine the mother-infant bond and its predictors to promote maternal and child health and inform public policy. OBJECTIVES: To identify the primary predictors of the mother-infant bond within the first six months postpartum, considering sociodemographic, obstetric, and neonatal factors, as well as symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD). METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted with postpartum women in a northeastern Brazilian capital city, assessed at three and six months postpartum. The a

A blueprint of an integrated cardio-obstetric preconception care pathway for women with pre-pregnancy intermediate- to high-risk cardiovascular disease.

BACKGROUND: In women with pre-existing cardiovascular disease (CVD), the haemodynamic changes of pregnancy may increase the risk of maternal and fetal complications. Preconception care should use patient-centred counselling to help modifying additional risk factors as part of a comprehensive risk assessment. This will ensure the woman enters pregnancy in an optimised condition. Specialist obstetric cardiology multidisciplinary teams can improve preconception care and decision-making, but access to these services may be inconsistent. The aim of this manuscript was to develop a comprehensive obs

Pregnant women's knowledge of obstetric violence and related factors: baseline evidence from an implementation study in the central zone, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Obstetric violence is globally acknowledged as a significant public health concern, with women in many countries reporting different types of mistreatment during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, that negatively affect their physical and emotional health. Many women are vulnerable to obstetric violenceand without knowledge about their rights, do not identify specific manifestations of violence. AIM: This baseline study aimed to assess the current knowledge on obstetric violence in pregnant women and to determine possible associated factors in the central zone, Tanz

Sedentary behavior, physical activity, psychological well-being, and gynecologic and obstetric disorders: A multivariable Mendelian randomization and mediation analysis.

The independent causal effects of interrelated lifestyle behaviors and psychological states on women's gynecologic and obstetric health remain incompletely understood. We conducted a comprehensive Mendelian randomization (MR) study to disentangle the effects of leisure screen time, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), experiencing mood swings, and the well-being spectrum on a wide range of these disorders. We performed 2-sample MR analyses using data from the UK Biobank and FinnGen cohorts for 20 outcomes, with causal estimates combined via meta-analysis. The analytical framework inc

Neonatal encephalopathy requiring therapeutic hypothermia over 5 years in a national Irish birth cohort: Relevance of the obstetric data.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal encephalopathy, often due to peripartum hypoxia-ischemia, remains a significant cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Therapeutic hypothermia is the established treatment for moderate and severe neonatal encephalopathy in Ireland since 2012 after publication of an international trial. Despite adherence to strict clinical criteria, the maternal and obstetric factors associated with infants requiring therapeutic hypothermia remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVES: To describe maternal and infant characteristics among infants treated with therapeutic hypothermia in I

Obstetrical outcomes after transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery for benign gynecological conditions: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) is increasingly used for benign gynecologic conditions; however, evidence regarding subsequent obstetrical outcomes and the optimal interval between surgery and conception remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate pregnancy outcomes after fertility-preserving vNOTES and to assess whether the postoperative interval influences the risk of adverse outcomes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 326 women who conceived after fertility-preserving vNOTES performed for benign gynecological diseases with c
