Autogenous bone graft is frequently necessary for arthroscopic procedures and even small open procedures that involve cruciate revision, osteochondritis dissecans repair, and fracture reduction and internal fixation. Currently used sites to obtain bone graft are the iliac crest and Gerdy's tubercle. This article describes an arthroscopic technique for harvest of small amounts of bone graft from the distal femur. This avoids the morbidity of the extra-articular harvest. Tube harvesters frequently used for osteochondral autografts are the primary tool required for this technique. However, as des

Malignant hyperthermia is a rare complication in clinical anesthesia, especially associated with the administration of succinylcholine or inhalation anesthetics. A 19-year-old patient, suffering from traumatic mandible fracture, underwent open reduction under general anesthesia. Unfortunately, following administration of succinylcholine, he also suffered severe facial twitch and the first episode of hypercapnia. After adequate management, the symptoms subsided. However, two hours later, the hypercapnia recurred, combined with progressive elevation of body temperature. After administration of i

Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for mandibular condyle fractures remains a controversial and challenging issue, with the exception of basal and low-neck fractures. Currently, there is a consensus that fractures causing irreparable malocclusion or dislocation, when the fracture line runs through the base or lower neck of the condyle, require ORIF. Due to the different characteristics of fractures, various surgical approaches and their modifications are available. The use of a minimally invasive intraoral approach during endoscope-assisted procedures is considered safer for the facia

INTRODUCTION: Busch-Hoffa fractures are rare, particularly in the pediatric population, with limited available literature. As it is an inherently unstable fracture and as the posterior femoral condyle is prone to non-union, correct and adequate treatment of the fracture is critical but challenging.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to (1) systematically review the literature on pediatric Busch-Hoffa fractures, and (2) present a rare case of a lateral Busch-Hoffa fracture with a bucket-handle lateral meniscus tear and popliteus tendon incarceration in a pediatric patient.
METHODS: A systematic revie

Weber Type B fractures often arise from external rotation with the foot supinated or pronated. Altered tibiofibular joint kinematics in Weber B fractures are responsible for syndesmotic damage seen in Weber B fractures. Weber B fractures are managed using open reduction and internal fixation if displaced. The syndesmosis is injured in up to 40% of cases resulting in an unstable injury with a syndesmotic diastasis. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the current literature on syndesmotic fixation in Weber B fractures, assess the outcomes and complications of syndesmotic fixation and assess

BACKGROUND: Given the contrapositive link between the posterior tibial plateau and the femoral condyle and the similar injury cause, the fracture type should be the same as the well-known Hoffa fracture of the femoral condyle. This study aims to report a case series with Hoffa-like tibial plateau fractures to improve understanding.
METHODS: We analysed six consecutive patients presented with Hoffa-like tibial plateau fractures in our hospital between October 2014 and December 2020, a period in which 1924 tibial plateau fractures were treated. Patients' data on demographics, radiographs, surgi

AIM: Mandibular condylar fractures account for 25 to 52 % of all mandibular fractures. Though current literature favors open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of condylar‑base and low condylar‑neck fractures, extraoral approaches are usually considered to be complicated by the risk of facial nerve injury and other possible complications. This study was undertaken to demonstrate that the periangular transmasseteric infraparotid surgical approach (TMIP) to condylar‑base and low condylar‑neck fractures provides excellent access to the bony fragments with minimal risk of complications such as

Treatment of mandibular condyle fractures is controversial. Open treatment achieves anatomic reduction with occlusal stability and faster functional recovery but risks facial nerve injury and jeopardizes joint capsule circulation which can lead to bone resorption. Traditional closed treatment avoids these issues but requires prolonged fixation and risks subsequent facial asymmetry, occlusal disturbance, and ankylosis. Rather than wires, closed treatment with elastics allows for customizable management of a healing fracture with ability to alter vector and degree of traction to restore vertical

BACKGROUND: Patellar fractures account for approximately 1% of all fractures. Due to the patella's importance as regards the extensor mechanism, effort should be made to preserve the patella. Several operative treatment methods have been introduced for patella fractures.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare the clinical effect of a titanium cable tension band and nickeltitanium (NiTi) patella concentrator (NT-PC) in treating patella fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with patella fractures were enrolled in this retrospective study. All the patients were treated via the o

INTRODUCTION: Displaced unstable distal third fractures of the humeral diaphysis are treated surgically through open reduction and internal fixation. Conventionally, surgeons prefer using long plates for secure fixation; however, we performed short plate dual plating for robust fixation that required a smaller incision and less dissection through an anterior approach. In this study, we report the results of dual plating of fractures of the humeral shaft, with radiographic evidence and clinical analysis.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 29 patients with distal third diaphyseal fractu

There is substantial variability in the treatment of proximal humeral fractures because of classification systems with poor interobserver reliability, rapid advances in technology (e.g., anatomically designed locking plates and reverse shoulder arthroplasty), and limited Level-I and II evidence for best treatments based on fracture patterns and physiological age. Almost three-quarters of proximal humeral fractures can be treated nonoperatively with good functional results as nearly 50% are nondisplaced or Neer one-part fractures. Another quarter occur in infirm patients or are characterized by

The authors evaluated the effectiveness of computerized virtual planning for open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of proximal humeral fractures. Between June 2011 and July 2013, a total of 46 patients with proximal humeral fractures were included in the current study. Preoperatively, fracture data were obtained via computed tomography (CT) reconstruction. Based on the dataset obtained from CT scanning, the 3-dimensional model of fractures was constructed and virtual segmentation, restoration, and internal fixation were performed. All eligible cases were treated by ORIF with locking plat

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the condyle account for one third of all the mandibular fractures. Different surgical approaches to the condyle described hitherto testify to the advantages and disadvantages of the different surgical techniques used for approaching the condyle in such cases of fractures. We have described and compared two of such surgical techniques in this study.
AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the outcome of dealing with condylar fractures by two different surgical techniques: the mini retromandibular approach, and the preauricular approach.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prosp

BACKGROUND: No reports describe the outcome for distal fibula and tibia fractures in athletes, although 10 to 15% of all athletic injuries occur around the ankle joint.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven competitive or recreational athletes with ankle fractures underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Thirty-six met the inclusion criteria, of which 27 returned for clinical and radiographic exams and also completed validated surveys and a subjective questionnaire.
RESULTS: Nineteen of the 27 were male. The average age of all patients was 18.1 +/- 5.9 years. The final evaluations

INTRODUCTION: Treatment choice for displaced, intercondylar fractures of the distal humerus is open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) through a posterior approach. The triceps-reflecting anconeus pedicle (TRAP) approach, combination of modified Kocher and Bryan-Morrey has been described as a conservative surgical exposure for fixation of the complex intercondylar fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven patients with intercondylar fractures of the humerus operated with this approach were reviewed. The mean follow-up was 26 (14-40) months. The aetiology of injuries was mostly fall on the

High-energy bicondylar tibial plateau fractures of Schatzker types V and VI are conventionally managed, after open reduction and internal fixation, with 6-12 weeks of restricted weight-bearing, out of concern for loss of reduction and articular collapse. Emerging evidence questions whether this restriction is necessary. Reports of immediate weight-bearing specifically after fixation of these most unstable bicondylar patterns remain scarce, as most comparative studies pool this subtype within mixed cohorts. We present three consecutive patients (two men and one woman; mean age: 54 years; all of

INTRODUCTION: The report describes hook plate fixation for an isolated, displaced pisiform fracture characterized by a small proximal fragment.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old woman presented with ulnar-sided wrist pain after a fall. Radiography and computed tomography revealed intra-articular displacement with mild comminution. Open reduction and internal fixation using a 1.2-mm hook plate resulted in a stable anatomical reduction without the need for fragment excision. Postoperatively, the wrist was immobilized in a volar splint in neutral position for 3 weeks, after which progressive mobilizati

Tibial spine avulsion fractures, or tibial eminence fractures, are intra-articular knee injuries that affect the bony attachment of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). It is commonly seen in children and adolescents aged 8 to 15 years old and can be caused by noncontact pivot shift injuries or by traumatic hyperextension knee injuries, as seen in adult ACL patients. A thorough history and physical exam is important in these patients alongside proper imaging that will confirm the diagnosis of a tibial spine avulsion. Proper imaging may also demonstrate other associated conditions or injuries
