Eye diseases associated with psoriatic arthritis in the Amazon.

PURPOSE: Ocular disorders are among the most frequent manifestations of psoriatic arthritis. The incidence, type, and severity of these disorders may be influenced by genetics, local environmental factors, and access to ophthalmic treatment. Here we describe the ocular manifestations of psoriatic arthritis among denizens of the Amazon region of Para, Brazil, treated by the rheumatology service of Universidade do Estado do Pará. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined 23 psoriatic arthritis patients (median age 47.78 years, no sex predominance) diagnosed according to Caspar's criteria. Di

Prepontine Shunting for Pseudotumor Cerebri in Previously Failed Shunt Patients: A 5-Year Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Shunting procedures have a high failure rate when used to treat pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) patients who have failed medical therapy. This failure is believed to be attributable to the collapsibility of the ventricular system when exposed to increased differential pressure gradients in the cerebral spinal fluid compartments caused by ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS). OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether prepontine/interpeduncular cistern shunting may be a reasonable alternative to VPS intervention in PTC patients with history of shunt failure. There have been no large series of cister

Endoscopic Transnasal Cryo-Assisted Removal of Orbital Cavernous Hemangiomas: Case Report and Technical Hints.

BACKGROUND: Cryoprobe devices are used by ophthalmic and orbital surgeons for extraction of fluid-filled intraorbital lesions. No series has described cryodissection via an exclusively transnasal approach. We describe 2 cases of purely endoscopic transnasal removal of intraconal orbital hemangiomas with the aid of a dedicated cryoprobe. METHODS: All transnasal endoscopic intraorbital procedures were collected and analyzed. In cases in which intraorbital dissection was performed with the use of an Optikon Cryo-line probe, clinical features, histology, size and location of the lesion, early and

Evaluation of choroidal substructure perfusion in patients affected by systemic sclerosis: an optical coherence tomography angiography study.

Objective: Vasculopathy in systemic sclerosis (SSc) is characterized by the obliteration of arterioles and a reduced capillary density in various tissues. In SSc, atrophic alterations of the choroid have been suggested based on morphological data acquired by optical coherence tomography (OCT). In this study, we aimed to assess the choroid in eyes of patients with SSc from a microcirculatory, dynamic point of view by adding optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to the diagnostic spectrum.Method: SSc patients were enrolled, and age- and gender-matched healthy subjects were used as cont

The role of Optical Coherence Tomography in optic neuropathies.

UNLABELLED: Optical neuropathies are neuro-ophthalmologic disorders, the main symptoms of which are the decrease of visual acuity and the alteration of the color vision. Optical coherence tomography has been one of the most important innovations in ophthalmology, which offered the possibility to analyze specific structures of the retina. Optical coherence tomography performs in vivo, real-time, noncontact scanning and provides cross-sectional and volumetric images with a resolution approaching that of histology. Optical coherence tomography offers the opportunity to study neurological diseases…
