A Latin American male and a white female infant who had a cytomegalovirus infection on the first day of life had unilateral optic nerve hypoplasia. A white male infant who had cytomegalovirus isolated at 5 weeks of age had a unilateral partial coloboma of the optic nerve. A 4-month-old black infant with cytomegalovirus infection diagnosed at 2 days of age had a unilateral complete coloboma of the optic nerve associated with microphthalmia. Optic nerve involvement was an important manifestation of this disease.

2 patients, who were treated with clioquinol after radical resection of carcinoma of the rectum and colostomy, developed symmetrical sensorimotor polyneuropathy, mild posterior tract ataxia, bilateral pyramidal tract lesions and optic neuropathy, a clinical picture compatible with subacute myelo-optic-neuropathy (S.M.O.N.). One patient had neurological symptoms after having received 750 g of clioquinol, 3 years after treatment started, and impairment of vision was noted after having received 1200 g. The other patient had neurological symptoms 6 weeks after clioquinol was first given, having re

PURPOSE: To report a case of uveitis and papillitis in a patient with cryopyrin-associated periodic syndrome.
METHODS: Case report. A 44-year-old white woman with a long history of inflammatory arthritis, diffuse erythematous rashes and hives, and hearing loss was referred to the Massachusetts Eye Research and Surgery Institution for an evaluation of chronic ocular inflammation. She was diagnosed with bilateral papillitis and uveitis after a comprehensive eye examination, which included dilated fundoscopy, optic nerve ocular coherence tomography, fluorescein angiography, indocyanine green ang

Ischemic optic neuropathy is caused by ischemia of the optic nerve head in the region of the lamina cribrosa. Differentiation is made between arteritic (AION) and nonarteritic (NAION) forms. AION is the most common ophthalmological manifestation of giant cell arteritis and is usually well controlled with systemic steroid therapy. Temporal artery biopsy for confirmation of the diagnosis is mandatory. NAION is not a disease entity but rather the common pathogenetic pathway of a large variety of diseases and conditions and is often the result of several interacting factors. For this reason, there

A 1-year-old male chinchilla with a 2-week history of conjunctivitis suffered subsequently from neurological signs comprising seizures, disorientation, recumbency and apathy. After 3 weeks of progressive central nervous disease the animal was killed in view of the poor prognosis. A non-suppurative meningitis and polioencephalitis with neuronal necrosis and intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed at necropsy and by light microscopy. The brain stem and cerebral cortices were most severely affected. Both eyes displayed ulcerative keratitis, uveitis, retinitis and retinal degeneration, and opt

BACKGROUND: In patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) we investigated the long-term effect of hemodilution on functional results, recurrence rate in the affected and involvement of the second eye.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study we reviewed 24 patients ranging in age from 62 to 92 years (mean 77 years) with AION. The duration of follow-up was between 8-51 months (mean 24.8 months). All patients received iso- (Hct > 40%) or hypervolemic (Hct < or = 40%) hemodilution over 8-10 days with daily infusion of 10% hydroxyethyl-starch 200/0.5. The hematocri

High resolution CT was found to be an extremely useful and sensitive method for evaluation and diagnosis of lesions involving the optic nerve sheath complex. Segmental "tram tracking" associated with fusiform or focal eccentric nerve sheath enlargement was confirmed to be of neoplastic origin in all cases, whereas "tram tracking" and tubular nerve sheath thickening included tumorous and a great variety of non-tumorous lesions as well.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether damage to the optic radiation (OR) in multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with optic nerve injury and visual dysfunction.
DESIGN: Case-control study.
SETTING: Referral center.
PARTICIPANTS: Ninety referred patients with MS and 29 healthy volunteers.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Magnetic resonance imaging indices along the OR were reconstructed with diffusion tensor tractography. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and visual acuity at high and low contrast were measured in a subset of the MS group (n = 36).
RESULTS: All tested magnetic resonance imaging indices

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To systematically describe the clinical picture of double-antibody seronegative neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (DN-NMOSD) with specific emphasis on retinal involvement.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data of 25 people with DN-NMOSD (48 eyes) with and without a history of optic neuritis (ON) were included in this study along with data from 25 people with aquaporin-4 antibody seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4-NMOSD, 46 eyes) and from 25 healthy controls (HCs, 49 eyes) for comparison. All groups were matched for age and sex and included from …

BACKGROUND: Recent publications have suggested considerable improvements in the clinical outcomes of ocular Behcet's disease (BD) patients. However, the long-term time course of clinical ocular features of BD in recent cases remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated annual time-course changes of best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) during ocular convalescent stages, as well as annual frequency of ocular attacks during the initial 10 years of follow-up in patients with BD.
METHODS: We studied 75 eyes in 39 patients (31 men, eight women) with BD, who were referred to our hospital b

Devic's neuromyelitis optica is an uncommon but severe monophasic or relapsing demyelinating disease. Current evidence supports the concept that it is a distinct disorder from multiple sclerosis, with some specific imaging characteristics. The aim of this paper is to report the clinical and imaging features of this rare entity and to discuss its differential diagnosis.

We describe the clinical characteristics and early natural history of a form of inflammatory optic neuropathy which is frequently bilateral and often painful, and is characterized by relapses and remissions. MRI scans of the brain are normal and those of the optic nerves often, but not always, show high signal abnormalities which enhance. The symptoms and signs respond well to corticosteroid treatment, although long-term immuno suppression is often necessary. The syndrome behaves in a way which is typical of the condition known as granulomatous optic neuropathy, but during a median follow-up o
