We describe a 51-year-old man in whom chronic maxillary sinusitis developing from a deep periodontal pocket, at 26, gave rise to cellulitis of the left orbit. The immediate cause was a fracture of the left zygomatic bone with some displacement of the infraorbital margin and the orbital floor. Treatment consisted of drainage and antibiotic medication. The zygomatic bone fracture was not reduced. Eye movements returned to normal and visual acuity was not permanently affected.

The distribution of 18F-labeled 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine (18F-FdUrd) in orbital tissue, tumor and aseptic inflammation was examined in rats. A rapid survey of eight cases with orbital hypertelorism did not reveal any evident change in maxillary displacement during facial growth following resection of nasal septum and medial displacement of orbital cavities. The purpose of this study was to investigate enophthalmos by measuring the volume of various orbital structures using off-line computer techniques on images generated by a CT scanner. A 50-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a diagnosis of traumatic carotid cavernous fistula. The fistula was observed to disappear spontaneously just after orbital venography. This was confirmed by clinical examinations and subsequent carotid angiogram. The possible mechanisms responsible for the spontaneous occlusion of carotid cavernous fistula are discussed.

Presentation is made of a case of orbital aspergillosis, a rare condition that may clinically mimic nonspecific orbital inflammatory disease. It can be a subacute or chronic disease that develops in otherwise healthy individuals. Fine needle aspiration biopsy, which has been useful in the diagnosis of a variety of orbital diseases, provided the initial diagnosis in this case.

Six patients had both restriction and paresis of the inferior rectus muscle after blowout fracture of the inferior orbital floor. All six were orthophoric in the primary position but had a severely constricted field of single binocular vision with troublesome diplopia on upgaze and downgaze. Recessing both the inferior rectus muscle and the superior rectus muscle in the injured eye greatly increased the field of single binocular vision. The symptoms improved in all six cases.

A case of visual loss associated with surgical repair of a zygomatic-orbital floor fracture is presented. A review of the literature indicates relatively few cases of blindness reported in association with surgical intervention for these fractures; however, it must be recognized that this serious complication does occur. The patient's ocular status should be evaluated before, during, and after orbital surgery.

In 1 week two patients with depressed fractures of the malar/orbital/zygomatic complex presented with roentgen evidence of fractures of the underlying coronoid process caused by the transmitted impact of the malar/orbital/zygomatic fragment without direct injury to the mandible. No similar cases had been seen in the previous 12 years, and reports found in the literature stated that this type of fracture occurs in only about 2% of all mandible fractures. Conservative treatment is recommended unless there is obvious displacement.
