Mandibular distraction osteogenesis is a well-developed clinical modality for the treatment of craniofacial deformities and dental arch discrepancies, in combination with orthodontic treatment. However, in our previous study, orthodontic tooth movement into the distraction gap caused severe root resorption. The present study aimed to clarify the osteoclastogenic activity of cells in the distraction gap. We hypothesized that the gene expression of osteoclastogenic- and osteoclast-supporting molecules in osteoblasts and stromal cells would increase at distraction sites during the consolidation p

The cases presented in this paper share a common skeletal characteristic, hyperdivergence, a common therapeutic strategy, similar diagnostic elements, and a common choice of non-symmetrical extractions. Interceptive treatment is especially useful for this type of malocclusion to prevent deep over-bites, atypical habits, and severe malocclusion. In the Tweed-Merrifeld technique, orthodontists use careful dental, occlusal, cephalometric, and esthetic evaluations to establish an appropriate treatment plan and therapeutic strategy whose goal will be: to eliminate unhealthy compensations, re-positi

Asymmetry in the face and dentition is a naturally occurring phenomenon. In most cases facial asymmetry can only be detected by comparing homologous parts of the face. The etiology of asymmetry includes: a) Genetic or congenital malformations e.g. hemifacial microsomia and unilateral clefts of the lip and palate; b) Environmental factors, e.g. habits and trauma; c) Functional deviations, e.g. mandibular shifts as a result of tooth interferences. Dental asymmetries and a variety of functional deviations can be treated orthodontically. On the other hand, significant structural facial asymmetries

Intrusion has been regarded as a controversial topic in the literature. It is apparent from many studies that excessive forces applied in orthodontic treatment might lead to undesirable results such as circulatory disturbances, pulp degeneration, calcification and even necrosis. This study was performed to observe the reaction of pulp and roots following tooth intrusion. Material consisted of four first premolar teeth of two adult patients. One premolar of each patient was intruded orthodontically and the other premolars were taken as controls. The palatal roots of the experimental teeth were

The conventional treatment methods for a subgingival crown root fracture are (1) extract the residual root and restore with a fixed bridge; (2) crown restoration with a deep subgingival margin; and (3) exposure of the fracture line by a crown lengthening operation and restoration with a crown. However, these methods require reduction of either the tooth structure or the periodontal support. Improvements in endodontic and orthodontic therapy followed Heithersay in 1973 to combine the use of endodontic and orthodontic therapy to manage subgingival crown root fractures--the so-called forced erupt

The maxillary lateral incisors are the most frequently missing teeth after the third molars. The cases with congenitally missing lateral incisors are treated either by orthodontically closing the spaces or by space regaining for prosthetic restorations. Malocclusion is the most effective factor for selecting the treatment method. Besides the characteristics of the malocclusion and interdigitation, the colour, the shape, the size and the position of the canines effect the treatment planning. In particular, Class II Div. 1 and Cl. I anterior crowding cases are the most convenient cases for ortho

This study reviewed 199 cleft palate repairs resulting in 22 percent fistula formation. Of these, 49 percent were judged to be symptomatic. Of 44 fistulas, 21 required treatment, of which 14 had conventional type surgical closure with an overall success rate of 35 percent. Good surgical technique and good surgical judgment were felt to be important factors both in preventing postoperative fistula and in the success of their repair. Conventional methods of surgical repair of hard palate fistulas were seen to result in a very poor success rate. Orthodontic movement of maxillary segments was seen

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is a benign, relatively uncommon childhood disorder and should be considered in children who have intermittent unilateral otalgia of three to four days' duration and whose audiographic, tympanometric, and clinical otologic examinations reveal normal findings. Most of the patients in our study had undergone orthodontic therapy during the year preceding the onset of temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and the vast majority of them had received orthodontic treatment within two weeks of each episode of otalgia. The diagnosis can be confirmed clinically by repro

In order to create awareness of a potential adverse effect of extraoral orthodontic appliances, we report the development of alopecia areata in two patients. Both patients experienced the onset of alopecia areata directly under sites of pressure from thier "headgear." In one patient the hair loss began 2 weeks after she began using her appliance. The other girl noticed patchy alopecia 2 to 3 weeks following an increase in the pressure and duration of use of an extraoral appliance. One of the patients also developed other areas of alopecia areata in sites unrelated to pressure. In both cases re

A 27-year-old adult female presented with the chief complaint of bilateral mandibular first molar absence and strongly preferred to use wisdom teeth rather than prosthetic replacements. Treatment was carried out using a round Australian wire fixed orthodontic technique. The second and third molars were mesially moved with a bilateral terminal helical loop combined with curved tip-back bends in Australian wire. Miniscrew anchorage was placed in the mandibular premolar area to assist in the protraction of the second and third molars. Additionally, a modified cortical drilling technique was emplo

INTRODUCTION: There is currently no recommendation for retaining corrected bimaxillary proclination cases. This study aimed to compare retention protocols for maintaining stability of such cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this single-center, single-blinded parallel control trial, 27 participants were assigned to three groups using block randomization with a 1:1:1 allocation ratio; fixed bonded retention (FBR), vacuum-formed retention (VFR), and dual retention (DR) comprising both types. Data were collected every 3-months from debond (T0) for 12 months (T4). The primary outcomes measured chang

BACKGROUND: The mechanical strength of mini-implants is a critical factor due to their small diameters. Currently, it is not possible to state whether there is a relevant difference between the mechanical properties of stainless steel (SS-MIs) and titanium alloy mini-implants (TA-MIs). The objective of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the mechanical strength of SS-MIs and TA-MIs, and to analyze, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the SS-MI, and TA-MI threads resistance to morphological damage after insertion.
METHODS: A standardized sample of 504 S

AIMS: To reduce remaining plaque niches due to dental malocclusion after periodontal treatment and to avoid reinflammation of periodontitis, severe anterior crowding can be treated orthodontically. The treatment indication is motivated by aesthetic and functional needs. In this study the biomechanical behaviour of crowded lower front teeth in reduced periodontium is analysed.
METHODS: Using the finite element (FE) method, a model of the mandible was constructed with an anterior crowding of 4 mm and a vertical bone loss of 4 mm in the front tooth area. A 0.3 mm (0.012″) round superelastic nick
