Unlike other congenital fatty acid oxidation defects, short-chain L-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA (SCHAD, HADH) deficiency is characterised by hypoglycemia with hyperinsulinism in the neonatal or infancy periods. The long-term and detailed clinical progression of the disease is largely unknown with almost 40 patients reported and only a few patients described clinically. We present clinical and laboratory findings together with the long-term clinical course of a case with a deep intronic HADH splicing mutation (c.636+471G>T) causing neonatal-onset hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia with mild progression.

Patients taking bisphosphonate drug therapy have demonstrated extremely poor alveolar bone healing after relatively minor oral surgical procedures. It would seem logical that extraction sockets could remain visible radiographically for an extended period after surgery, even in cases with soft tissue healing. This article chronicles the case of a patient who had been taking zoledronic acid chronically for metastatic cancer and who demonstrated numerous residual sockets (also known as ghost sockets), with lamina dura outlines that were visible radiographically.

In an experiment using ten boars, the distribution of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) was determined in the male reproductive tract by in situ hybridization over a period of 120 days after intranasal inoculation. We analysed the chimio-sensitivity to antibiotics of endemic strains of Shigella isolated in Mbarara district, southwest Uganda. Twenty four strains were isolated, of which none was sensitive to cotrimoxazole and eight (33.4%, 95% CI [15.6-55.3]) to ampicillin, the two antibiotics recommended to treat dysentery during non epidemic periods in Uganda. During the epidemic of bacillary dysentery at Agartala, Tripura, a total of 62 hospitalized patients suffering from diarrhoeal diseases were studied during the later part (11-16 June, 1988) of the epidemic. Principal features of Shigellosis cases were discussed. Of these 62 cases investigated, 19(30.6%) cases had the mucoid diarrhoea. From them S.dysenteriae type 1 and S.flexneri had been recovered from 31.6% and 10.5% cases, respectively. All the strains of S.dysenteriae type 1 isolated during the period of investigation were resistant to nalidixic acid.

Effects of a sublethal IV dose (10 micrograms/kg of body weight) of Escherichia coli endotoxin were studied in 7 conscious ponies. Arterial blood gases and plasma lactic acid were determined periodically throughout the 180 minutes of the study. Arterial hypoxemia occurred within 5 minutes despite intense hyperventilation. Colic and diarrhea occurred in all ponies within 30 minutes after endotoxin administration. Metabolic acidosis developed within 30 minutes and persisted throughout the study, indicating widespread reduced tissue perfusion.

Clinical treatment of 147 female patients suffering with genital herpes simplex virus were conducted in two phases. The retinoic acid derivative Ro 10-9359, given orally in maximum daily doses of 100 mg to 15 patients with psoriasis vulgaris, led to clearing of the lesions in 8 patients. The average period of treatment was 9 weeks. In 14 patients side-effects were observed, the most important being palmo-plantar desquamation, shivering, thirst and diffuse hair loss. In 2 patients scaling led to withdrawal.
