Tropone-based cyclic β2,3-amino acids are rare nonproteinogenic amino acid scaffolds with limited synthetic tractability. Herein, we report a concise synthesis of tropono-β2,3-amino acid derivatives from readily available phenols and nitriles via oxidative dearomatization followed by a one-pot Michael addition/retro-6π electrocyclization/oxidation sequence. Control experiments and DFT calculations indicate a kinetically controlled ring expansion followed by rapid [1,5]-H shift leading to the thermodynamically favored anionic intermediate.

This study used a biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with Chrysanthemum frutescens extract to create eco-friendly Packaging Films. The methanol extract was analysed for the main phenolic compounds; flavonoids and coumarins. PVA with 5% C. frutescens extract demonstrated the highest antimicrobial activity against B. cereus, E. coli, F. solani, and C. albicans with inhibition zones of 15, 25, 30, and 20 mm, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of PVA films incorporated with C. frutescens extract as effective eco-friendly antimicrobial packaging materials.

A highly practical method for demethylation of aryl methyl ethers employing a long-chain thiol has been developed. Under the conditions described herein, clean and fast conversions to the desired phenolic compounds have been achieved with a broad range of substrates. Unlike other thiolate-mediated methods, this newly developed protocol features in-situ generation of sodium alkylthiolate using NaOH, and is almost free from foul smells and potentially harmful gases. It therefore provides an attractive option for the demethylation of aryl methyl ethers.

Anacardic acids, 2-methylcardols, and cardols isolated from various parts of the cashew [Anacardium occidentale] (Anacardiaceae) fruit have been found to exhibit tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Kinetic studies with the two principal active compounds, 6-[8(Z),11(Z),14-pentadecatrienyl]salicylic acid and 5-[8(Z),11(Z),14-pentadecatrienyl]resorcinol, have indicated that both of these phenolic compounds exhibit characteristic competitive inhibition of the oxidation of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) by mushroom tyrosinase.
