An electron microscopic study of MPTP-induced inclusion bodies in an old monkey.

Eosinophilic inclusion bodies have recently been found in the nerve cells of the substantia nigra in aged primates with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced parkinsonism. This report describes the ultrastructure of the inclusion-bearing nerve cells in the substantia nigra from one of these animals. By electron microscopy the inclusions were less well demarcated and less conspicuous than those seen in hematoxylin-eosin stained paraffin sections. The bodies corresponded to portions of the nerve cell that were devoid of Nissl substance, but contained an increased number of …

Tacaribe virus: a new alternative for Argentine hemorrhagic fever vaccine.

Tacaribe virus is know to protect guinea pigs and primates against lethal challenge with Junín virus. A long-term study on the effect of Tacaribe virus infection in the guinea pig was carried out to determine the extent of cross-protection and whether antigen and/or viral persistence and tissue damage could be detected in immune animals. Viral titers, antigen expression in organs, and histologic lesions were sequentially searched for up to 540 days postinfection (pi). Neutralizing antibodies (Abs) and cross-protection to Junín virus were evaluated up to 660 days pi. Tacaribe virus titers and a…

Heart-lung transplantation: successful therapy for patients with pulmonary vascular disease.

We report our initial experience with three patients who received heart-lung transplants. The primary immunosuppressive agent used was cyclo … pulmonary complications. We attribute our success to experience with heart-lung transplantation in primates, to the use of cyclosporin A, and to the anatomic and physiologic advantages of combined heart-lung replacement. We hope that such transplants may ultimately provide an improved outlook for selected terminally ill patients with pulmonary vascular di …

An epidemic of yellow fever in Central Brazil, 1972-1973. II. Ecological studies.

Results of ecological studies undertaken during the 1972-1973 epidemic of yellow fever (YF) in Goiás State, Brazil, suggest that mosquitoes … magglutination-inhibition and/or neutralizing antibody to YF virus was found in seven (30.4%) of 23 primates examined. There was, however, little evidence of sick or dying monkeys. Among other wild-caught animals only a single marsupial (Caluromys) had antibodies to the virus. These data show that sylvan YF is not confined to the forest, nor always associa …

Status of vitamin E as an erythropoietic factor.

There is now convincing evidence that vitamin E is a specific erythropoietic factor for nonhuman primates and swine. There is no evidence, however, that vitamin E is normally required as an erythropoietic factor for humans and many species of animals. We propose that the lack of a requirement for vitamin E in erythropoiesis in humans is due to a metabolic adaptation that circumvents the need for the role that the vitamin otherwise would serve. There is reason to believe that this metabolic adaptation is deranged in patients with protein-calorie malnutrition. These patients respond with reticul…

Malignant lymphoma resembling Burkitt's tumour in rhesus monkeys: (light- and electron microscopic studies).

Spontaneous tumours of the haematopoetic system have been only rarely observed in nonhuman primates. We had the opportunity to carry out light and electron microscopic investigations of three lymphomas in immature rhesus monkeys from our colony. All animals had tumours of both retroperitoneum and lymph nodes. The relatively uniform lymphoblastic or lymphoreticular tumour cells as well as the massive occurence of the so-called "starry sky macrophages" were histologically characteristic. Histochemically, the marked pyroninophilia of these tumour cells was evident. The electron nicroscopy reveale…

Nucleus dorsalis superficialis (lateralis dorsalis) of the thalamus and the limbic system in man.

Although the earlier supposition was that the n. dorsalils superficialis (n. lateralis dorsalis) of the thalamus projected to the parietal region, more recent evidence has linked it to the posterior cingulate gyrus and possibly adjacent regions near the splenium of the corpus callosum. An afferent supply from lower levels was in more doubt, although some report had been made of cell and fibre degeneration in the n. dorsalis superficialis after extensive temporal resections and section of the fornix in lower primates. The five human hemispheres of the present study all had lesions of long durat…

Commentary on the Adaptive Significance of Sociality Around Parturition Events, and Conspecific Support of Parturient Females in Some Social Mammals.

In recent decades, it has become apparent that during parturition events in a number of social mammals, social support behaviours from group mates can be directed to parturient females (and their newborn neonates). Such behaviour has been documented in diverse taxa, across non-human primates, Elephantidae, Cetacea, and Chiroptera, living in a range of social group organisations, from matrilineal groups to cooperatively breeding groups and multi-male, multi-female groups. Since sociality, in association with parturition, has been demonstrated to confer several health benefits to human mothers a…

In nonhuman primates, this effect was strongly additive to the previously described stabilization of the prefusion conformation of the F protein. The improved immunogenicity of RSV F by packaging appeared to involve prefusion stabilization. These f …

Physiological basis of resolution acuity in vision.

Vision is the primary sensory modality for many animals, especially humans and other primates. A fundamental constraint on visual resolution acuity is set by the size and spacing of cone photoreceptors, notably in the fovea of the retina where cones are the smallest. To optimally utilise this cone array, neurons in the retina and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) must have receptive field centres comprised of only one cone, yet such receptive fields have never been observed directly. Here we comprehensively map parafoveal LGN receptive fields in male macaques using an adaptive optics microstimu…

The evidence for old age motor neuron death: A scoping review.

Age-related neuromuscular dysfunction is widely recognized; however, the extent to which aging is accompanied by motor neuron (MN) loss remains underexplored. This review evaluates evidence for MN loss with aging across species and anatomical motor pools. We synthesize PUBMED studies in humans, non-human primates, rats and mice within the spinal cord and brainstem. Attention was given to the methodological approach used to quantify MNs and categorized based on what MNs were quantified (specific pools, vertebral levels, lateral motor columns). Methods were assessed qualitatively, based on stere…

Deciphering 6-mer Spectra Distribution Rules in Coronavirus Genomes: Application to Comparative Genomic Analysis.

Given the rapid mutation and high transmissibility of coronaviruses, especially SARS-CoV-2, comparative genomic studies are crucial for understanding viral evolution, transmission dynamics, and therapeutic development. In prior work, we analyzed and compared the spectral distribution patterns of various k-mer subsets across 920 genome sequences, spanning from primates to prokaryotes. This revealed an evolutionary mechanism in genome sequences, indicating the presence of both CG and TA-specific selection modes. In the present study, we further investigate the specific selection modes in coronav…

Decoupling Choice from Motor Response Reduces Choice-History Effects.

Perception and action form a loop as an organism interacts with its environment. Here, we probe the interdependence between the two in the context of choice-history effects, the tendency of past choices and their outcomes to bias current choices. We investigated if the modulation by previous choices depended on the coupling between perceptual choices and the motor responses reporting these choices. We analyzed data from non-human primates (Macaca mulatta; three females and five males) performing two different perceptual decision-making tasks. Each task had a "coupled" variant with a fixed mapp…

This protocol successfully captured detailed UWF-OCTA images with well-defined microvascular patterns. Evolutionary history of LRRK2 and PRKN in leprosy and Parkinson's disease.

LRRK2 (leucine-rich repeat kinase 2) and Parkin (PRKN) act in shared pathways and are implicated in Parkinson's disease (PD), leprosy, and other diseases. While leprosy likely imposed strong evolutionary pressure, PD's relatively late onset renders it largely invisible to natural selection. We examined the evolutionary history of LRRK2 and PRKN in primates and human populations and found evidence of positive selection on both genes, alongside strong constraint at LRRK2 disease-associated sites. Gibbons were found to carry a pathogenic PRKN mutation (R33Q) causing protein instability. Using anc…

From the pancreas to the amygdala: New brain area critical for ingestive and motivated behavior control exerted by amylin.

Amylin, a pancreatic peptide, has a well-established role in feeding behavior control. Amylin analogues are clinically utilized in patients with diabetes and are under investigation as potential anti-obesity pharmacotherapies. The neural circuits underlying actions of amylin on behavior are not well understood. While amylin was found to bind to the central amygdala (CeA) of rodents and primates and we found that all components of amylin receptors are present in the CeA, their potential role in physiology or behavior remains unknown. Here, we investigated the impact of this potential pancreas -…
