Women's experience of endometriosis.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a chronic disease affecting between 5% and 15% of women of reproductive age. Diagnosis can be delayed for many years, despite the existence of severe pain, and women often find that their experiences are not taken seriously by health professionals. Little research has been conducted into how endometriosis affects their lives. AIM: The aim of this paper is to report a study exploring women's experience of living with endometriosis. METHOD: A qualitative approach was used, in which women were asked to relate their stories starting from the first experience of sympt

[International multidisciplinary consensus statement on perioperative fasting in adults].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this consensus statement was to develop evidence-based recommendations on perioperative fasting, taking the growing global awareness of the negative effects of prolonged fasting before surgery into account, particularly with respect to clear liquids. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted, including assessments of the risk of bias and the overall level of evidence using GRADE methodology to develop 13 preliminary recommendations on perioperative fasting. This was followed by a 3-stage Delphi process involving an international, multidisciplinary panel of

Does the way palliative care clinicians talk about delirium influence clinical care in the last days of life? A secondary analysis of qualitative interview data.

BACKGROUND: Delirium in the last days of life is common. Inconsistent terminology in clinical practice is common and recognised internationally. Whether this adversely affects management is a concern, but unknown. AIM: We explored how hospice staff talk about delirium, agitation or withdrawal in the last days of life and whether the language used influences practice. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of qualitative data. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: 25 clinicians from two hospices, including doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants and allied health professionals. RESULTS: Two themes were generated; (i) U

Diabetic sarcopenia in clinical practice: expert consensus and usability evaluation of a novel screening and diagnostic algorithm.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, an expert panel developed an algorithm for the screening, diagnosis, and staging of diabetic sarcopenia, a clinically relevant condition in the progression of diabetes. Sarcopenia is associated with an increased risk of falls, physical disability, reduced quality of life, and increased mortality. METHODS: A qualitative study, with quantitative aspects, was conducted to assess medical specialists' opinions on the applicability of the proposed algorithm. Data was collected using a questionnaire that included information relating to user experience, a usability questionna

"I Knew I Could Write": A Novel Narrative Writing Intervention for Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer often experience social and emotional challenges across the illness course. METHODS: This qualitative study aimed to explore AYAs' perceptions of the feasibility, acceptability, and potential impact of a longitudinal narrative writing intervention for AYA

Prevention is less expensive than treatment in chronic kidney disease: a descriptive analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide, leading to great concern regarding costs, particularly in underdeveloped or developing countries. Estimating the costs of different CKD management approaches is necessary for planning public policies. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the costs of renal replacement therapy (RRT) and non-RRT treatment and to propose the screening for CKD in the Brazilian Health Care System (SUS). METHODS: This descriptive analysis was based on information from the Brazilian Health Ministry database, DATASUS (www.datasus.saude.gov.br),

Rethinking continuity in general practice for people with incurable illness: a qualitative case study of mesothelioma.

BACKGROUND: Continuity in general practice has clear benefits but is difficult to achieve. Existing research has identified groups of individuals who may especially benefit from continuity, such as those with a terminal condition. Mesothelioma is an incurable disease caused by asbestos exposure and people with this diagnosis derive significant benefit from continuity. However, there is little research exploring continuity in general practice for these individuals. AIM: The aim of this study was to provide detailed understanding of experiences of continuity in UK general practice among people

What are the top 10 global research priorities for perianal Crohn's disease? The Global Perianal Crohn's Disease Priority Setting Partnership.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Perianal Crohn's disease (pCD) is a debilitating condition with a prevalence of approximately 20% in patients within 10 years of diagnosis of CD. The condition significantly impacts patient quality of life, and there remain a number of unmet needs relating to its optimal management. A global Priority Setting Partnership (PSP) was established to identify the top 10 research priorities for pCD. METHODS: The PSP followed standard James Lind Alliance (JLA) methodology. An initial survey was circulated to gather unanswered research questions from key stakeholders. From these r

The Impact of New Weight-Loss Medications on Bariatric Surgery and Surgeon Employment.

Obesity continues to pose an urgent public health challenge in the United States, with prevalence among adults and significant associations with chronic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. While bariatric surgery has established itself as the most effective long-term treatment for severe obesity, delivering consistent weight loss and notable improvements in obesity-related comorbidities, its utilization remains relatively low due to factors such as patient apprehension, access disparities, and insurance limitations. The recent emergence

Health Belief Model Interventions in Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP): Untapped intervention in the pharmacy arena.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic continues to be a major public health crisis in the United States. Although pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has emerged as an effective tool to prevent HIV transmission, its uptake and adherence remain suboptimal, especially among high-risk populations. This article explores how the Health Belief Model (HBM) can serve as a guiding framework for pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to enhance PrEP delivery and patient engagement. Recent literature highlights persistent barriers to PrEP use, including stigma, perceived risk, misinformatio

Understanding Healthcare Providers' Care for Patients with Medications Treating Opioid Use Disorder in the Emergency Department: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: There is limited research exploring the changing clinical practices among healthcare providers (HPs) care for patients with Emergency Department (ED)-initiated Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD). METHODS: This scoping review followed the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley to map relevant evidence and synthesize the findings. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus for related studies from inception through October 12, 2022. Following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 studies were included. Subsequently, they were cha

Systematic Reviews on the Prevention of Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Related to Maternal Obesity to Improve Evidence-Based Counselling.

BACKGROUND: Health professionals and their patients should understand the importance of evidence. In the case of gestational diabetes mellitus, which is often associated with an abnormally high body mass index, the immediate and long-term outcome of women and their offspring depends in part on advice and implementation of lifestyle changes before, during and after pregnancy. METHODS: Up to September 2023, MEDLINE, CENTRAL, and WEB OF SCIENCE were used to identify systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the prevention of gestational diabetes. The ROBIS and AMSTAR criteria were analyzed for all
