Variable effects of social support by race, economic status, and disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Health status and disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other chronic diseases are strongly associated with social support, which suggests that enhanced social support in medical care might improve SLE outcome. There has been little or no study on identifying patients for whom social support would be most beneficial. It would allow practitioners to enable social support more effectively as a complement to disease management. METHODS: A retrospective cohort (200 patients with SLE from 5 centers), balanced by race and insurance status, was studied i

Psychogenic Respiratory Distress: A Case of Paradoxical Vocal Cord Dysfunction and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary disease such as asthma is a psychosomatic disorder vulnerable to exacerbations precipitated by psychological factors. A case is described in which a patient thought to have treatment-refractory asthma was discovered to have a conversion reaction, specifically paradoxical vocal cord dysfunction (PVCD), characterized by abnormal vocal cord adduction during inspiration. DATA SOURCES: Reports of PVCD were located using a MEDLINE search and review of bibliographies. MEDLINE (English language only) was searched from 1966 through December 1998 using the terms functional asthma,

[Value of early management of patients with chronic renal failure].

The objective of early referral in patients with chronic renal failure is to prevent complications as the disease progresses to the stage where dialysis or transplantation become necessary. Early diagnosis requires a systematic assessment of glomerular function in all patients with signs suggestive of renal disease. Screening programs are also recommended in populations at risk with vascular disease, diabetes, occupational exposure to nephrotoxic substances, or a potentially nephrotoxic treatment. Once stabilized, chronic renal failure usually progresses inevitably to end-stage disease. In Fra

Long-Term Outcomes After Guillain-Barré Syndrome: A Systematic Review of Functional Recovery, Residual Symptoms, and Quality of Life.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy characterized by rapidly progressive weakness and variable recovery trajectories. Although many patients regain functional independence after the acute phase, increasing evidence suggests that long-term sequelae such as fatigue, pain, residual disability, and reduced health-related quality of life are common and frequently under-recognized. However, contemporary evidence on long-term outcomes after GBS remains dispersed across multiple study designs and populations, making an updated synthesis clinically relevant.

CRPS: A contingent hypothesis with prostaglandins as crucial conversion factor.

UNLABELLED: CRPS is an acute pain disease expressed as chronic pain with a severe loss of tissue and function. CRPS usually occurs after minor injuries and then progresses in a way that is scarcely controllable, or completely uncontrollable. This article addresses the functional control mechanism of a biological organism, a comparison of techniques, and the way the negative feedback mechanisms fail in regulated feedback systems. The measurement and regulation system is controlled at the local, regional, and central levels in a biological system. Locally generated substances such as prostagland

Effects of aquatic rehabilitation on symptoms, physical function, and quality of life in individuals with knee joint dysfunction: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Knee joint dysfunction, including osteoarthritis, ligament injury, and post-surgical conditions, impairs symptoms, physical function, and quality of life. Aquatic rehabilitation leverages water's buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic properties to reduce joint load and facilitate exercise, but evidence on its effectiveness across populations and intervention parameters is inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-guided meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (PROSPERO CRD420251139080) comparing structured aquatic exercise with land-based exercise or conventional treatmen

Post-surgical Comparison of Volumetric Analysis in Orbital Fractures with Conventional and Advanced Management.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor dysfunction is a disorder predominantly affecting females. It is common and undermines the quality of lives of at least one-third of adult women and is a growing component of women's health care needs. Identifying and supporting these needs is a major public health issue with a strong psychosocial and economic basis. The importance of the interdependence of mechanical, neural, endocrine and environmental factors in the development of pelvic floor dysfunction is well recognized. There is a paucity of data investigating the true prevalence, incidence, specific risk facto

Correction of Lateralization of the Perioral Insertion of Gracilis Muscle in Facial Reanimation in Children: A Report of Two Cases.

Facial palsy in pediatric patients can lead to severe functional impairments and psychosocial challenges. Free gracilis muscle transfer (FGMT) is to date the gold standard for dynamic facial reanimation, but suboptimal aesthetic outcomes (SAO), due to malpositioning of the nasolabial fold, still represent a challenge to the surgeons. Especially, craniolateral displacement of the medial insertion of the gracilis muscle at the nasolabial fold represents a true challenge. The purpose of these two case reports is to propose a novel technique for the medialization of the perioral insertion of the g

The moderating effect of dietary patterns on the association of depression and anxiety with cognitive function.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Investigating modifiable risk factors, such as diet, is crucial in understanding their effects on the relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD)-related cognitive decline and related conditions. This study assesses whether dietary patterns moderate the relationship between symptoms of depression, anxiety, and cognitive function in older adults. Given that biological and psychosocial differences between sexes may influence dietary behaviours, mental health symptoms, and cognitive outcomes, conducting sex-stratified analyses will allow for identification of differential a
