Interaction between the responses to stimulation of peripheral chemoreceptors and baroreceptors: the importance of chemoreceptor activation of the defence areas.

It has been shown recently that in the cat anesthetized with althesin, stimulation of carotid chemoreceptors evokes the autonomic components … d chemoreceptor responses should be reconsidered, particularly as it is known that the baroreceptor reflex is suppressed when the defence areas are activated by central stimulation. The present paper describes experiments performed on Althesin-anesthetized cats in which carotid baroreceptors were stimulated by inflating a blind sac and carotid chemorecep …

Disuse plasticity limits spinal cord injury recovery.

Use-dependent plasticity after spinal cord injury (SCI) enhances neuromotor function, however, the optimal timing to initiate rehabilitation remains controversial. To test impacts of early disuse, we established a rodent model of transient hindlimb suspension in acute phase SCI. Early disuse in the first 2-week after SCI undermined recovery on open-field locomotion, kinematics, and swim tests even after 6-week of normal gravity reloading. Early disuse produced chronic spinal circuit hyper-excitability in H-reflex and interlimb reflex tests. Quantitative synaptoneurosome analysis of lumboventra…

Differences in the autonomic regulation of temperature in the lower lip and tongue during activation of the lingual nerve.

Orofacial temperature influences orofacial functions and is related to hemodynamics mediated by the autonomic nerves. Although the properties of autonomic vasomotor responses differ in orofacial tissues, differences in the autonomic regulation of orofacial temperature are unclear. We examined the differences in blood flow (BF) and temperature (Tm) between the extraoral (lower lip) and intraoral tissues (tongue) of urethane-anesthetized rats. Noncholinergic parasympathetic vasodilation evoked by trigeminal-mediated reflex elicited significant increases in BF and Tm in both tissues, and these in…

Inverse Bell's phenomenon following eyelid surgery: a case series and comprehensive review.

Inverse Bell's phenomenon (IBP) is a rare but clinically significant complication of eyelid surgery, characterized by paradoxical downward d … ases associated with lagophthalmos or ocular surface disease. Two patients regained a normal Bell's reflex after conservative or surgical management, whereas two developed chronic IBP despite intervention. Literature review indicates that most cases are transient, although persistent IBP may result from scarring, fibrosis, or neuromuscular disruption. Ca …

Neurophysiological investigations in a case of primary paroxysmal hemicrania-tic syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The association between paroxysmal hemicrania (PH) and trigeminal neuralgia-the so-called PH-tic syndrome-has rarely been described. However, a correct diagnosis is crucial since both disorders require specific treatments. Little is known about pathophysiological mechanisms, and, to date, there are no electrophysiological studies in patients with PH-tic syndrome. CASE: We describe the case of a 52-year-old man with a PH-tic syndrome successfully treated with an association of carbamazepine (1200 mg/day) and indomethacin (150 mg/die). Patient underwent trigeminal reflex testing, in…

Neuromodulators in Acute and Chronic Cough in Children: An Update from the Literature.

Cough is one of the most common reasons leading to pediatric consultations, negatively impacting the quality of life of patients and caregivers. It is defined as a sudden and forceful expulsion of air from the lungs through the mouth, typically triggered by irritation or the stimulation of sensory nerves in the respiratory tract. This reflex is controlled by a neural pathway that includes sensory receptors, afferent nerves, the brainstem's cough center, efferent nerves, and the muscles involved in coughing. Based on its duration, cough in children may be classified as acute, lasting less than …

New horizons in the ageing autonomic nervous system: orthostatic hypotension and supine hypertension.

Blood pressure regulation is an automatic, moment-by-moment buffering of the blood pressure in response to physiological changes such as orthostasis, exercise and haemorrhage. This finely orchestrated reflex is called the baroreflex. It is a regulated arc of afferent, central and efferent arms. Multiple physiological changes occur with ageing that can disrupt this reflex, making blood pressure regulation less effective. In addition, multiple changes can occur with ageing-related diseases such as neurodegeneration, atherosclerosis, deconditioning and polypharmacy. These changes commonly result …

Sympathetic nerves control bacterial clearance.

A neural reflex mediated by the splanchnic sympathetic nerves regulates systemic inflammation in negative feedback fashion, but its consequences for host responses to live infection are unknown. To test this, conscious instrumented sheep were infected intravenously with live E. coli bacteria and followed for 48 h. A month previously, animals had undergone either bilateral splanchnic nerve section or a sham operation. As established for rodents, sheep with cut splanchnic nerves mounted a stronger systemic inflammatory response: higher blood levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-…

Positional Vertigo and Unilateral Gradual Hearing Loss Following Sleeve Gastrectomy: A Case Report.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is an effective treatment option in patients with morbid obesity, with rare long-term sideeffects. In this report, we present a 42-year-old woman who reported positional vertigo and unilateral gradual hearing loss plus continuous tinnitus after LSG. The patient had no signs or symptoms of mental health disorders and the results of the haematological and serum biochemical tests were normal. However, audiometric test revealed mild sensorineural hearing loss with magnitude in high-frequency tones. Also, acoustic reflex threshold showed neural pathway damage, …

Complete atrioventricular dissociation and sinus arrest after pheochromocytoma resection.

INTRODUCTION: Although preoperative bradycardia has been reported in several pheochromocytoma cases, postoperative bradycardia has not. This … minutes following surgery, complete atrioventricular dissociation and sinus arrest developed. Vagal reflex attenuation due to decreased noradrenaline after tumor removal and perioperative pain and fear were believed to be the causes. A temporary pacemaker was implanted to prevent sudden death due to vagal overstimulation. CONCLUSION: Vagal reflex attenu …

The potential role of the carotid body in COVID-19.

The carotid body (CB) plays a contributory role in the pathogenesis of various respiratory, cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases through reflex changes in ventilation and sympathetic output. On the basis of available data about peripheral arterial chemoreception and severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a potential involvement in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be hypothesized through different mechanisms. The CB could be a site of SARS-CoV-2 invasion, due to local expression of its receptor [angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2] and an alternative…

Bifurcation of the respiratory response to lung inflation in anesthetized dogs.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the effect of lung volume on prolongation of duration of expiration (TE) with limited understanding of th … ter bilateral vagotomy. We postulate that prolongation of TE relates to the Breuer-Hering inflation reflex, which increases the time needed for a passive expiration; whereas the ability to shorten TE could relate to Head's paradoxical reflex acting to initiate inspiration or to activate inspiratory motor activity to brake expiratory flow as occurs in the …

Neural innervation stimulates splenic TFF2 to arrest myeloid cell expansion and cancer.

CD11b(+)Gr-1(+) myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) expand in the spleen during cancer and promote progression through suppression of cytotoxic T cells. An anti-inflammatory reflex arc involving the vagus nerve and memory T cells is necessary for resolution of acute inflammation. Failure of this neural circuit could promote procarcinogenic inflammation and altered tumour immunity. Here we show that splenic TFF2, a secreted anti-inflammatory peptide, is released by vagally modulated memory T cells to suppress the expansion of MDSCs through CXCR4. Splenic denervation interrupts the anti-inf…
