Stigma and mental health in the Royal Navy: a mixed methods paper.

BACKGROUND: US research suggests that military personnel suffering from mental health problems are reluctant to seek help because of stigma. AIMS: First, to identify the prevalence of mental health stigma beliefs in a UK military sample. Second, to investigate whether distressed personnel report more stigma than those who are not distressed. METHOD: A survey of 1599 naval personnel was undertaken as part of a larger trial prior to examining the effectiveness of a novel trauma support program. RESULTS: The presence of internal stigma was substantial and significantly higher for distressed pe

To bite or not to bite! A questionnaire-based survey assessing why some people are bitten more than others by midges.

BACKGROUND: The Scottish biting midge, Culicoides impunctatus, responsible for more than 90% of biting attacks on human beings in Scotland, is known to demonstrate a preference for certain human hosts over others. METHODS: In this study we used a questionnaire-based survey to assess the association between people's perception of how badly they get bitten by midges and their demographic, lifestyle and health related characteristics. RESULTS: Most people (85.8%) reported being bitten sometimes, often or always with only 14.2% reporting never being bitten by midges when in Scotland. There was n

Objective voice parameters and self-perceived handicap in dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: This study focuses on the relation between objective voice quality and the self-perception of a voice handicap. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 86 German-speaking patients (51 women, 35 men) suffering from benign dysphonia. The test persons completed the German version of the Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) Questionnaire without prior information about their diagnosis and underwent voice analysis with the Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) being the parameter of this study. RESULTS: No correlation between V-RQOL and DSI could be found (p>0.05). On the V-RQOL,

Emotion recognition and regulation in anorexia nervosa.

It is recognized that emotional problems lie at the core of eating disorders (EDs) but scant attention has been paid to specific aspects such as emotional recognition, regulation and expression. This study aimed to investigate emotion recognition using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes (RME) task and emotion regulation using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) in 20 women with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 20 female healthy controls (HCs). Women with AN had significantly lower scores on RME and reported significantly more difficulties with emotion regulation than HCs. There was a si

Dyslexic entrepreneurs: the incidence; their coping strategies and their business skills.

This comparative study explores the incidence of dyslexia in entrepreneurs, corporate managers and the general population. It examines the suggestion that dyslexic entrepreneurs develop coping strategies to manage their weaknesses, which are subsequently of benefit in the new venture creation process. Results of this study suggest that there is a significantly higher incidence of dyslexia in entrepreneurs than in the corporate management and general US and UK populations and some of the strategies they adopt to overcome dyslexia (such as delegation of tasks) may be useful in business. The stud

Job insecurity and change over time in health among older men and women.

OBJECTIVES: We estimated associations between job insecurity and change over time in the physical and psychological health of older adult men and women. METHODS: We conducted secondary analyses of longitudinal data from men and women (N = 190) born between 1935 and 1952 in the Chicago Health, Aging, and Social Relations Study. We used multivariate regression techniques to test the association of job insecurity with changes in physical health (self-reported global health, resting blood pressure, and urinary catecholamines [epinephrine]) and psychological health (depressive symptoms, hostility,

[Functional pathophysiology of consciousness].

Consciousness (Latin conscientia "moral conscience"), according to the English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) [103], is the awareness of all that occurs in the mind of a person, whereas the American philosopher John Searle (2000) defined it as "inner qualitative, subjective states and processes of awareness". In modern science it is defined as a continuous state of full awareness of the Self and one's relationship to the external and internal environment, describing the degree of wakefulness in which an organism recognizes stimuli. This widely discussed biological term for complex neuronal

Immersion in the surface.

In order to treat patients with a narcissistic structure showing a rigid shell of defence together with a lack of inner differentiation - insufficient subject/object constitution - one has to deal with a split kind of transference. Their compelling need for distance corresponds to their fragile self-esteem. They feel threatened by the analysis and the analytic relationship. Because the seeming normality of these patients' thinking and language is deceptive, a variation of psychoanalytic technique to facilitate the work with them is described and explained in detail. To transform their two-dime

The psychosocial aspects of strabismus in teenagers and adults and the impact of surgical correction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of surgical correction of strabismus on psychosocial parameters in teenagers and adults with a history of childhood-onset strabismus. METHODS: Consecutive patients older than 15 years of age who underwent strabismus surgery between 1997 and 2002 were contacted to complete a telephone questionnaire about their preoperative and postoperative psychosocial experiences. Formulas using the questionnaire answers were calculated to estimate the impact of strabismus on self-esteem, self-confidence, self-assessment of intelligence, effect on employment options, and inter

The "double life" of bulimia: patients' experiences in daily life interactions.

This qualitative study, using interviews with 38 subjects, explored how and why they conceal bulimic symptoms and the understanding of concealing in terms of social interaction. A "double life" was described as a dichotomy between being active and outgoing versus performing shameful bulimic behaviors and constantly living with fear of stigmatization, and striving against exposure. Concealing was well planned to avoid such fear, and to preserve dignity. Bulimia may be understood as volitional exertion of interaction control, not just as a result of poor impulse regulation. Understanding the mea

Imagining the impossible: motor representations in anosognosia for hemiplegia.

Anosognosia for hemiplegia (AHP) is characterised by poor insight or underestimation of hemiplegia after brain injury. Recent explanations of AHP have used an established 'forward model', which proposes that normal motor awareness involves comparing the predicted and actual sensory consequences of movements. These accounts propose that AHP patients may be able to form representations of their intended movements (i.e., motor representations), but fail to register discrepancy between intended and actual movements. A prediction arising from this proposal is that AHP patients are able to generate

A pragmatic approach to the classification of menopausal status for community-based research.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article was to describe a pragmatic approach to the menopausal status classification of clinical research study participants that allows for women who have gynecological circumstances that mask their natural menstrual pattern. DESIGN: We demonstrate the application of an algorithm for the Health and Wellbeing After Breast Cancer study based on self-reported menstrual cycle pattern, gynecological history, presence or absence of vasomotor symptoms, and systemic hormone use to classify women with newly diagnosed breast cancer as premenopausal, perimenopausal, or postme

A multifactorial developmental model for the etiology of major depression in a population-based sample.

BACKGROUND: Kendler et al. proposed gender specific developmental models for Major Depression (MD) using a population-based sample of north-American adult twins. The aim of this study was to test whether any of the models could predict both MD and other depressive disorders among unrelated Swedes of both sexes. To test depression specific prediction the sample was overrepresented for other psychiatric diagnoses. METHODS: Persons with and without psychiatric symptoms were randomly selected from a population-based questionnaire study and interviewed by psychiatrists. Diagnoses were made accordi

Child maltreatment profiles and adjustment problems in high-risk adolescents.

The purpose of this article is to identify profiles of maltreatment experiences in a sample of high-risk adolescents and to investigate the relationship between the derived profiles and psychological adjustment. Participants are 1,131 youth between the ages of 12 and 18 years involved with publicly funded mental health and social services. Information on physical, sexual, and emotional maltreatment and psychological symptoms are obtained in interviews with adolescents and their primary caregivers. Using latent profile analysis, three maltreatment profiles are identified: "sexual+physical+emoti

Psychosocial effects of otoplasty in children with prominent ears.

This study aimed to investigate changes experienced by children during the pre- and postoperative periods of prominent ear corrective surgery. A total of 30 patients with prominent ears, sometimes called "lop ears" or "cup ears," ranging in age from 6 to 14 years were consecutively enrolled in this study. Half of the patients (n = 15, 50%) were male. The inclusion criteria specified children with prominent ears and reports of evident anatomic deformity. Clinical evaluations, routine laboratory tests, and interviews were performed in the pre- and postoperative periods. To assess the dissatisfac

A cross-cultural study of gambling behaviour among adolescents.

This study investigated whether the prevalence of weekly and problem gambling among youth varied according to cultural affiliation. A convenience sample of 1,265 Quebec high school students aged 12-18 was divided into three linguistic groupings: Anglophone (English), Francophone (French), and Allophone (other). Results revealed that the Allophone grouping contained the highest proportion of youth who gambled on a weekly basis and who reported gambling problems, followed by the Anglophone, and finally the Francophone groupings. Acculturation difficulties were associated with problem gambling. F

Towards a physiologically based diagnosis of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), while including such physiological data as weight and the reproductive status of the individual, are primarily based on questionnaires and interviews that rely on self-report of both body-related concerns and eating-related behaviors. While some key components of eating disorders are psychological and thus introspective in nature, reliance on self-report for the assessment of eating-related behaviors and nutritional status lacks the objectivity that a physiologically based measure could provide. The development of a more physiologica

Self-perceptions of dispositional luck: relationship to DSM gambling symptoms, subjective enjoyment of gambling and treatment readiness.

In the present study, we examined whether having a gambling disorder is related to: (a) the personality trait of perceived personal luck and (b) subjective enjoyment associated with placing bets. We also examined whether the presence or absence of disordered gambling and wagering enjoyment are related to probability of treatment entry. In 2001, we surveyed 82 young adults at the University of Windsor who gambled, but were not in treatment. They completed measures assessing symptoms of pathological gambling (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994), dispositional luck (Steenbergh, Meyers,
