Internet Addiction and Relationships with Insomnia, Anxiety, Depression, Stress and Self-Esteem in University Students: A Cross-Sectional Designed Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Internet addiction (IA) could be a major concern in university medical students aiming to develop into health professionals. The implications of this addiction as well as its association with sleep, mood disorders and self-esteem can hinder their studies, impact their long-term career goals and have wide and detrimental consequences for society as a whole. The objectives of this study were to: 1) Assess potential IA in university medical students, as well as factors associated with it; 2) Assess the relationships between potential IA, insomnia, depression, anxiety, stress

Prediction of performance reduction in self-paced exercise as modulated by the rating of perceived exertion.

PURPOSE: Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) is a scale of exercise difficulty and has been hypothesized to be a regulator of work rate during self-pacing. The goal of this work was to develop a dynamic prediction of RPE and to characterize the control strategy employed to reduce work rate during self-paced exercise using RPE as feedback. METHODS: Training and test data were acquired from the literature to develop a linear regression of RPE as a function of four physiological variables: core temperature, mean-weighted skin temperature, metabolic rate, and integral of relative oxygen consumptio

Functional somatic syndromes: sensitivities and specificities of self-reports of physician diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Functional somatic syndromes have no laboratory or pathologic abnormalities and so are diagnosed by symptom-based case definitions. However, many studies, including recent ones, have used self-reports of physician diagnosis rather than the case definitions. Our objective was to determine the sensitivities and specificities of self-report of physician diagnosis for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia (FM), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), panic disorder, and migraine. METHODS: Each of 312 female patients with incident interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome and matched p

Craving and self-efficacy in the first five weeks of methadone maintenance therapy: a daily process study.

OBJECTIVE: Among individuals initiating methadone maintenance therapy for heroin addiction, low craving and high self-efficacy are thought to predict treatment response; however, in the case of craving, findings have been inconsistent. This study will test two hypotheses: (1) craving and self-efficacy both predict treatment response and (2) withdrawal symptoms and sleep quality predict greater craving and greater self-efficacy, respectively. METHOD: An exploratory study using electronic diary data and multilevel models examined these hypotheses. A sample of 21 heroin users was recruited durin

Sex ratios and the risks of haematological malignancies.

Eating Disorders are very widespread within the adolescent population. A possible interpretation and the comprehension of such forms of psychopathology may revolve around the failure to develop a well-defined personal identity, an incapacity to achieve a sense of differentiation with respect to others, an incapacity to measure oneself against others, dependence on others, the fear of rejection and a sense of inadequacy. This study explores the relational styles and behaviour of individuals suffering from eating disorders and their influence on the development of the personality, with reference

An Agreement of Antigen Tests on Oral Pharyngeal Swabs or Less Invasive Testing With Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction for Detecting SARS-CoV-2 in Adults: Protocol for a Prospective Nationwide Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented level of worldwide testing for epidemiologic and diagnostic purposes, and due to the extreme need for tests, the gold-standard Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) testing capacity has been unable to meet the overall worldwide testing demand. Consequently, although the current literature has shown the sensitivity of rapid antigen tests (RATs) to be inferior to RT-PCR, RATs have been implemented on a large scale without solid data on performance. OBJECTIVE: This study will compare analytical and clinical s

Integrated HIV testing, prevention, and treatment intervention for key populations in India: a cluster-randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: To achieve reductions in HIV incidence, we need strategies to engage key population at risk for HIV in low-income and middle-income countries. We evaluated the effectiveness of integrated care centres in India that provided single-venue HIV testing, prevention, and treatment services for people who inject drugs (PWID) and men who have sex with men (MSM). METHODS: We did baseline respondent-driven sampling surveys in 27 sites across India, and selected 22 of these (12 PWID and ten MSM) for a cluster randomised trial on the basis of high HIV prevalence and logistical considerations.

A large-scale and PCR-referenced vocal audio dataset for COVID-19.

The UK COVID-19 Vocal Audio Dataset is designed for the training and evaluation of machine learning models that classify SARS-CoV-2 infection status or associated respiratory symptoms using vocal audio. The UK Health Security Agency recruited voluntary participants through the national Test and Trace programme and the REACT-1 survey in England from March 2021 to March 2022, during dominant transmission of the Alpha and Delta SARS-CoV-2 variants and some Omicron variant sublineages. Audio recordings of volitional coughs, exhalations, and speech were collected in the 'Speak up and help beat coro

Feasibility of using breath sampling of non-volatiles to estimate the prevalence of illicit drug use among nightlife attendees.

The prevalence of drug use among nightlife attendees needs to be accurately estimated to, for example, evaluate preventive interventions. This study tested the feasibility of using a breath-sampling device to estimate the prevalence of drug use among nightlife attendees. The study was conducted at five nightclubs and a large music festival in Stockholm, Sweden. Participants were invited to participate and microparticles in exhaled breath were sampled and analyzed for 47 compounds using a state-of-the-art analytic method that follows forensic standards. In addition, participants' breath alcohol

Clinical and subthreshold eating disorders: case detection in adolescent schoolgirls.

The point prevalence of eating disorders was investigated in schoolgirls from lower socio-economic classes and a method of case detection was tested. A two-stage procedure (self-report measures and interviews) was followed. All girls meeting at least one of the following three criteria were recruited as possible cases: EAT > or = 30, BMI < 17.5, BMI < 19 or > 24 and EAT > or = 20. The Mann-Whitney's two-tailed test and the chi-square test were used to assess the significance of differences between the possible cases and the others and between the false positives and the cases. Effects of cognitive behavioral therapy with relaxation vs. imagery rescripting on test anxiety: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety is a common condition in students, which may lead to impaired academic performance as well as to distress. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two cognitive-behavioral interventions designed to reduce test anxiety. Test anxiety in the participants was diagnosed as social or specific phobia according to DSM-IV. Subsequently subjects were randomized to three groups: a moderated self-help group, which served as a control group, and two treatment groups, where either relaxation techniques or imagery rescripting were applied. METHODS: S

The new first listener: Daydreaming styles and self-compassion predict adolescent disclosure to AI, differently in ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: AI chatbots are increasingly becoming a first common point of mental health disclosure for adolescents, suggesting a potential 'Step 0' within stepped-care pathways prior access to professional help. This study examined how daydreaming styles and self-compassion relate to adolescents' disclosure of inner thoughts to an AI 'listener', and whether these psychological processes differ among young people with ADHD, for whom spontaneous mind wandering and attentional control difficulties may be especially salient. DESIGN: A large-scale cross-sectional online survey was conducted with ad

Feasibility of smartphone app-based neuropsychological tasks for screening people with subclinical depression and anxiety: a preliminary validation study.

INTRODUCTION: Early identification and intervention for individuals at elevated risk for mental disorders is critical for improving quality of life and reducing social costs. Conventional self-report screening tools, however, are susceptible to social desirability and recall biases. Therefore, this study explored the feasibility and validity of smartphone app-based neuropsychological tasks designed to complement self-report measures and assist in the early screening of individuals with subclinical depression and anxiety. METHODS: A subclinical depression/anxiety group (n = 55) and a control g
