Average African American three-dimensional computed tomography skull images: the potential clinical importance of ethnicity and sex.

The production of average 'normative' three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography surface images of the bony skull has only recently been explored. The authors wish to determine the effect of using sex- and ethnicity-specific adult average 3D skull images for comparisons with patient images at various stages of craniofacial surgical management (i.e., diagnosis, treatment planning, prosthetic design, image-guided operative procedures, and outcomes assessment). Craniofacial surgical reconstruction for abnormal patterns of development, cancer resection, or trauma are most likely to benefit from th

[Epidural hematoma in the child].

The different modes of presentation of extradural haematomas in children are discussed, based on the clinical data of 13 patients (12 operated and one conservatively treated). In a 12-month-old infant, anaemia and bradycardia were the first signs of the haematoma, whereas stupor and apnoeic respiration pattern were seen in a 5-year-old boy. Both children had neither pupillary dilatation nor focal neurological signs. Four children were operated on a classical extradural haematoma. In 3 cases the skull fracture was missed in the peripheral referring hospital. A secondary deterioration of the lev

Conformation-associated health in pet rabbits in the UK: A VetCompass cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Domestic rabbit breeds vary substantially from the wild rabbit body type. However, little is known about how the conformation of pet rabbits influences their health. METHODS: Data were extracted from VetCompass anonymised clinical records of rabbits under UK primary veterinary care during 2019. RESULTS: The study included 162,107 rabbits. Based on 88,693 rabbits with relevant breed information recorded, skull shape was classified as brachycephalic (79.69%), mesaticephalic (16.80%) and dolichocephalic (3.51%). Based on 83,821 rabbits with relevant breed information recorded, ear c

The sphenoidal emissary foramen and the emissary vein: Anatomy and clinical relevance.

Although the sphenoidal emissary foramen (SEF) and its content are anatomically and clinically relevant, accurate description of them in the modern literature is lacking. This study aimed to examine and describe the SEF and its content (the sphenoidal emissary vein [SEV]). We analyzed 1,000 computed tomography (CT) images, 170 dry skulls, 50 formalin-fixed specimens, and three specimens (heads) following guidelines proposed by Dr. Albert L. Rhoton Jr. MD for latex injection. SEV morphology was determined by histological staining and electron microscopy. The SEF was observed in 46.8% of the CTs

Midline (central) fluid percussion model of traumatic brain injury in pediatric and adolescent rats.

OBJECTIVE Experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI) models hold significant validity to the human condition, with each model replicating a subset of clinical features and symptoms. TBI is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in children and teenagers; thus, it is critical to develop preclinical models of these ages to test emerging treatments. Midline fluid percussion injury (FPI) might best represent mild and diffuse clinical brain injury because of the acute behavioral deficits, the late onset of behavioral morbidities, and the absence of gross histopathology. In this study, the auth

Sex, stature, and age estimation from skull using computed tomography images: Current status, challenges, and future perspectives.

The skull has long been recognized and utilized in forensic investigations, evolving from basic to complex analyses with modern technologies. Advances in radiology and technology have enhanced the ability to analyze biological identifiers-sex, stature, and age at death-from the skull. The use of computed tomography imaging helps practitioners to improve the accuracy and reliability of forensic analyses. Recently, artificial intelligence has increasingly been applied in digital forensic investigations to estimate sex, stature, and age from computed tomography images. The integration of artifici

Effect of skull morphology on fox snow diving.

Certain fox species plunge-dive into snow to catch prey (e.g., rodents), a hunting mechanism called mousing. Red and arctic foxes can dive into snow at speeds ranging between 2 and 4 m/s. Such mousing behavior is facilitated by a slim, narrow facial structure. Here, we investigate how foxes dive into snow efficiently by studying the role of skull morphology on impact forces it experiences. In this study, we reproduce the mousing behavior in the lab using three-dimensional (3D) printed fox skulls dropped into fresh snow to quantify the dynamic force of impact. Impact force into snow is modeled

Abusive head trauma: differentiation between impact and non-impact cases based on neuroimaging findings and skeletal surveys.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether imaging findings can be used to differentiate between impact and non-impact head trauma in a group of fatal and non-fatal abusive head trauma (AHT) victims. METHODS: We included all AHT cases in the Netherlands in the period 2005-2012 for which a forensic report was written for a court of law, and for which imaging was available for reassessment. Neuroradiological and musculoskeletal findings were scored by an experienced paediatric radiologist. RESULTS: We identified 124 AHT cases; data for 104 cases (84%) were available for radiological reassessment. The AH

A Novel Descriptive Framework for Petroclival and Temporal Bone Meningioma Surgical Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Petroclival and temporal bone meningiomas are rare neoplasms that mimic vestibular schwannomas in presentation. However, surgical approaches for their resection are often more complex, largely due to the necessity of resecting pathologic dura. Although several classification and staging systems for petroclival meningiomas have been proposed, they are rarely cited and none are reliably correlated with surgical outcomes. We present a descriptive framework and hypothesize that it is predictive of surgical outcomes. METHODS: Medical records of patients seen at a tertiary referral cent

Validity and reproducibility of cephalometric measurements obtained from digital photographs of analogue headfilms.

UNLABELLED: The emerging market of digital cephalographs and computerized cephalometry is overwhelming the need to examine the advantages and drawbacks of manual cephalometry, meanwhile, small offices continue to benefit from the economic efficacy and ease of use of analogue cephalograms. The use of modern cephalometric software requires import of digital cephalograms or digital capture of analogue data: scanning and digital photography. The validity of digital photographs of analogue headfilms rather than original headfilms in clinical practice has not been well established. Digital photograp

Biomechanical performance of the cranio-mandibular complex of the small notosuchian Araripesuchus gomesii (Notosuchia, Uruguaysuchidae).

Notosuchia is a clade of crocodyliforms that was highly successful and diverse in the Cretaceous of Gondwana. Araripesuchus gomesii is a small notosuchian from the Early Cretaceous of Brazil that belongs to Uruguaysuchidae, one of the subgroups of notosuchians that first radiated, during the Aptian-Albian. Here we present a finite element analysis of A. gomesii based on a model reconstructed from CT scans and performed using published bone properties for crocodiles. The adductor musculature and their respective attachment areas were reconstructed based on Extant Phylogenetic Bracket. Different

A new baurusuchid (Crocodyliformes, Mesoeucrocodylia) from the late cretaceous of Brazil and the phylogeny of Baurusuchidae.

BACKGROUND: Baurusuchidae is a group of extinct Crocodyliformes with peculiar, dog-faced skulls, hypertrophied canines, and terrestrial, cursorial limb morphologies. Their importance for crocodyliform evolution and biogeography is widely recognized, and many new taxa have been recently described. In most phylogenetic analyses of Mesoeucrocodylia, the entire clade is represented only by Baurusuchus pachecoi, and no work has attempted to study the internal relationships of the group or diagnose the clade and its members. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Based on a nearly complete skull and a ref

Orbital reconstruction for pulsatile exophthalmos secondary to sphenoid wing dysplasia.

Sphenoid wing dysplasia or absence of the greater sphenoid wing is a rare condition that is considered pathopneumonic for neurofibromatosis … Surgical management included dissection of the dura of the temporal lobe off of the periorbita and skull base reconstruction with a combination of radial-shaped titanium mesh and split calvarial bone grafts. Postoperatively, there was near immediate resolution of the pulsatile exophthalmos, and follow-up at 1 year showed no recurrence.

The Sarnat studies in craniofacial biology.

Dr. Bernard Sarnat is one of plastic surgery's greatest laboratory investigators. His contributions to our understanding of modern craniofacial molecular biology are immense. His landmark studies continue to influence the way we approach and treat patients today. This article outlines his classic investigations of the craniofacial skeleton, with particular interest in lower face, midface, and upper face development; cranial suture and cranial base biology; and tooth and dental development. In this article, a brief summary of Dr. Sarnat's investigations are followed by how these data have had a

Point-of-Care 3-Dimensional-Printed Polyetheretherketone Customized Implants for Cranioplastic Surgery of Large Skull Defects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: 3-Dimensional (3D) printing has become a common tool to aid implant molding for cranioplastic surgery of large skull defects. Until now, 3D printing of cranial implants itself has not been used, mainly because of medicolegal concerns. With a 3D printer developed for printing medical applications and with implant-grade polyetheretherketone (PEEK) filament available, we established a workflow (in compliance with medical device regulations) to 3D print cranial implants for cranioplastic surgery directly at the point of care (POC). Here, we describe the implementation of

Transforming Growth Factor-β3/Recombinant Human-like Collagen/Chitosan Freeze-Dried Sponge Primed With Human Periodontal Ligament Stem Cells Promotes Bone Regeneration in Calvarial Defect Rats.

Patients with a skull defect are at risk of developing cerebrospinal fluid leakage and ascending bacterial meningitis at >10% per year. However, treatment with stem cells has brought great hope to large-area cranial defects. Having found that transforming growth factor (TGF)-β3 can promote the osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs), we designed a hybrid TGF-β3/recombinant human-like collagen recombinant human collagen/chitosan (CS) freeze-dried sponge (TRFS) loading hPDLSCs (TRFS-h) to repair skull defects in rats. CFS with 2% CS was selected based on the

Conservative Management of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leaks.

Cerebrospinal fluid leaks are a complex clinical challenge with variable causes and management. Conservative therapy focuses on lowering intracranial pressure through bed rest, sinus precautions, antiemetics, bowel regimens, and lumbar drainage. Leaks persisting beyond 1 week may require surgical repair due to meningitis risk. Iatrogenic, postoperative, and spontaneous leaks rarely resolve without surgery, while small traumatic leaks tend to have the highest chance of resolution. Prophylactic antibiotics remain controversial. Management should be tailored to etiology, location, and patient-spe
