[Gram-negative bacteria folliculitis].

Gram-negative folliculitis was first described in 1968 and had since given rise to numerous publications. To our knowledge, no case has yet been published in France, although we observed 6 of them in 12 months. Between March, 1985 and March, 1986, samples of pus for bacteriological examination were obtained from all our patients with acnea vulgaris resistant to the standard treatment (i.e. oral tetracycline combined with topical applications of tretinoin or benzoyl peroxide), thus enabling us to detect patients who had a Gram-negative bacillus (GNB) in at least one pustule. Inflammatory and pa

Distinct roles for adhesion molecules during innervation of embryonic chick muscle.

In vitro studies have suggested that the cell adhesion molecules NCAM and G4/L1 contribute to a variety of events during neural development. We have directly tested the role played by these molecules in the process of initial nerve ingrowth and ramification in the embryonic chick iliofibularis muscle by in ovo injections of specific adhesion-blocking antibodies and analysis of the resultant nerve branching pattern in muscle whole mounts. Antibodies against both molecules produced axonal defasciculation, which resulted in an enhanced transverse projection to the fast region of the muscle. In th

[Congenital cutaneous candidiasis: a case with review of the literature].

The clinical features of CCC are stereotyped. Twenty-two cases have been found in the literature. Skin lesions are present at birth (12/22) or within the first twelve hours of life (7/22) and sometimes later, up to the sixth day of life. Maculopapular lesions are the first to appear, followed by the more typical vesiculopustular rash and secondary desquamation. Involvement of the upper half of the body is frequent. Interestingly, palm and sole pustules are almost constant. Oral, periungueal and conjunctival lesions are rare. In most cases, healing occurs within ten days of topical treatment us

Regional cerebral blood flow and CSF pressures during Cushing response induced by a supratentorial expanding mass.

In order to delineate the critical blood flow pattern during the Cushing response in intracranial hypertension, regional cerebral blood flow was measured with radioactive microspheres in 12 anesthetized dogs at respiratory arrest caused either by expansion of an epidural supratentorial balloon or by cisternal infusion. Regional cerebrospinal fluid pressures were recorded and the local cerebral perfusion pressure calculated in various cerebrospinal compartments. In the 8 dogs of the balloon expansion group, the systemic arterial pressure was unmanipulated in 4, while it was kept at a constant l

Nonrespiratory side effects of epidural morphine.

Ten healthy young male volunteers received in random sequence 10 mg of morphine sulfate intravenously and by lumbar epidural route during two 26-hour study sessions, in order to observe the appearance and resolution of the following side effects: (a) pruritus, (b) nausea, (c) vomiting, (d) urinary dysfunction. With the exception of one subject, who experienced transient (2 hours) nausea, none of the subjects experienced any adverse side effects after the intravenous morphine. However, all subjects experienced some degree of one or more complications, starting 3 hours after the epidural adminis

Natural history of global and critical brain ischaemia. Part III: cerebral prognostic signs after cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Cerebral recovery course and rate during the first year after global and critical ischaemia monitored and predicted by EEG and neurological signs.

The monitoring and predictive value of the electroencephalography (EEG) and neurological signs was evaluated in 125 patients who had sustained critical brain ischaemia during circulatory arrest of primary cardiovascular aetiology. Cranial nerve areflexia with mydriasis or extension of the upper limb in response to cutaneous stimulation reliably indicated brain death and appearance of the flexion reflex or of intermittent spikes and sharp waves in the EEG predicted an unfavourable outcome; but other EEG configurations and nuerological signs per se were inaccurate variables to assess the outcome

Possible role of magnesium loss in the pathogenesis of myocardial fiber necrosis.

Cellular loss of Mg is associated with uncoupling of oxydative phosphorylation and disruption of Mg-dependent intra-mitochondrial enzyme systems. The link of Mg loss and its association with intracellular Ca accumulation in the pathogenesis of myocardial fiber necrosis (MFN) has been clearly established in dietary Mg deficiency. Rapid loss of myocardial Mg has been demonstrated also in acute hypoxic states and in patients succumbing to myocardial infarction. Evidence from this laboratory indicates that loss of myocardial Mg may be a basic biochemical denominator in the development of MFN of di

Frontline clinicians' perceptions of the stigmatization of covid-19 and suggestions to prevent future health-related stigma: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Most studies examining COVID-19 related stigma in the healthcare setting have focused either on the patient’s or clinicians’ own experiences of being stigmatized. Few studies have explored frontline clinicians’ perceptions about the stigmatization of COVID-19 and stigma prevention. This study aimed to better understand, through the perceptions of physicians, nurses and other frontline healthcare providers, the drivers that underlie the stigmatization of COVID-19, and strategies to prevent future health-related stigma. METHODS: Individual interviews were conducted with 19 clinicians

From Misunderstanding to Marginalization: The Role of Knowledge in HIV-Related Discrimination and Risk Behavior Among Adolescents in Germany.

Adolescents frequently demonstrate limited knowledge about HIV/AIDS, contributing to persistent stigma, misconceptions, and risky behaviors. These knowledge gaps and stigmatizing attitudes hinder effective HIV prevention and health outcomes. Understanding the sources of adolescents' HIV knowledge and identifying demographic disparities can inform targeted educational interventions. We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous survey with 2110 adolescents aged 14-18 in Munich, Germany, prior to an extracurricular sexual health lecture between November 2023 and February 2024. The questionnaire asse

Negotiating and Struggling for a New Life: Stigma, Spirituality, and Coping Strategies of People Living with HIV in Myanmar.

Although enacted and internalized stigma is a continuing problem for people living with HIV (PLWH) in Southeast Asia, there is little understanding of how PLWH cope with discrimination, exclusion, and other negative outcomes caused by HIV-related stigmatization. This article aims to bridge this gap by analyzing the lived experiences of HIV-related stigmatization and coping strategies among 30 people with HIV in Myanmar, a country heavily influenced by religion, especially Buddhism. Among the 30 study participants, 20 were female and 10 were male, with ages ranging from 18 to 50 years. Through

Stigmatization and Preferences in Monkeypox Vaccine Regimens.

A significant monkeypox (mpox) outbreak occurred in 2022, particularly involving sexual and gender minority (SGM) groups. Stigma and misperceptions have led to fear of being labeled a member of the SGM group when obtaining immunization for mpox. We hypothesized that the most recommended injection site, intradermal injection in the forearm, stresses stigmatization. We conducted an online survey in a medical center in Taiwan between May 2023 and June 2023 among adults who were going to receive the second preexposure vaccination. The questionnaire comprised questions about physical and psychologi

Assessment of aversive effects of methylone in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats: Conditioned taste avoidance, body temperature and activity/stereotypies.

Methylone's rewarding effects have been well characterized; however, little is known about its aversive effects and how such effects may be impacted by sex. In this context, the present study investigated the aversive effects of methylone (vehicle, 5.6, 10 or 18 mg/kg, IP) in 35 male and 31 female Sprague-Dawley rats assessed by conditioned taste avoidance and changes in body temperature and activity/stereotypies. Methylone induced significant taste avoidance, changes in temperature and increased activity and stereotypies in both males and females. Similar to work with other synthetic cathinon

The SOFIA Study: Negative Multi-center Study of Low Dose Fluoxetine on Repetitive Behaviors in Children and Adolescents with Autistic Disorder.

Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) that reduces obsessive-compulsive symptoms. There is limited evidence supporting its efficacy for repetitive behaviors (RRBs) in autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). We conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of fluoxetine in 158 individuals with ASD (5-17 years). Following 14 treatment weeks (mean dose 11.8 mg/day), no significant differences were noted on the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale; the proportion of responders was similar (fluoxetine: 36%; placebo: 41%). There were similar rates of AEs (e.g., insomnia

Links between discrimination and cardiovascular health among socially stigmatized groups: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease across diverse groups in the U.S. population, and increasing research has identified stigma as a potential barrier to cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. This systematic review examines evidence linking discrimination and cardiovascular health among socially stigmatized groups. STUDY DESIGN: Six databases were systematically reviewed from inception through February 2018 for studies with adult subjects, focusing on cardiovascular health indicators among social groups stigmatized because of their gender, race/ethnicit

The effects of acute and repeated methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) administration on striatal transcriptome networks in male long evans rats.

The psychoactive drug methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) elicits feelings of euphoria and hyperexcitability, but can also result in paranoia, agitation, and depression by unknown mechanisms. We identified molecular networks in the rat striatum that were affected by single or repeated exposure to MDPV. Male Long Evans rats were injected with either saline or MDPV (1 mg/kg) (single or repeated MDPV) over 5 days. To distinguish the effects of repeated MDPV from a single exposure, an additional group received saline over 4 days and then MDPV on the 5th day. Twenty-four hours after the final injecti

Impulse control symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease: The influence of dopaminergic agonist.

BACKGROUND: Impulse control disorders and punding are common in Parkinson's disease patients. Cross-sectional studies suggest an association between dopamine replacement therapy, especially dopaminergic agonists, and impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease. However, some surveys suggest that Parkinson's disease itself does not confer an altered risk for impulse control disorders and related behavior, although these disturbances are more frequently reported in Parkinsonian patients than in healthy controls. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the frequency of impulse control disorders

A cross-sectional comparative study of perceived stigma between patients with epilepsy and patients living with HIV/AIDS in Accra, Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Health-related stigma is a great challenge to the treatment of diseases. In epilepsy like other conditions, it causes affected individuals to conceal their illness. In this study, we described stigma perceived by patients with epilepsy at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), a tertiary referral facility, and the Accra Psychiatry Hospital in Ghana (APH). We then compared the perception of stigma in patients with epilepsy to stigma perceived by persons living with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) (PLWHA), a chronic communicable disease sti

Ruminative brooding is associated with salience network coherence in early pubertal youth.

Rumination, and particularly ruminative brooding, perpetuates dysphoric mood states and contributes to the emergence of depression. Studies of adults and older adolescents have characterized the association between rumination and intrinsic functional connectivity within default mode (DMN), salience (SN) and executive control (ECN) networks; we know little, however, about the brain network basis of rumination during early puberty, a sensitive period for network reorganization. 112 early puberty boys and girls completed resting-state scans, the Ruminative Response Scale, and the Youth Self-Repor

Morin Pretreatment Attenuates Schizophrenia-Like Behaviors in Experimental Animal Models.

OBJECTIVES: Morin is a naturally occurring flavonoid with strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that flavones modulate neurotransmission through enhancement of gamma amino butyric acid activity in the central nervous system; which led to the hypothesis that they could exert tranquilizing effects in rodents. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the antipsychotic effect of morin on experimental animal models. METHODS: The antipsychotic effect of morin (25, 50 and 100 mg/kg) administered intraperitoneally (i.p.) was assessed on novelty-induced locomotion,
