We measured serum levels of progesterone and estradiol among 35 patients with endometritis confirmed by endometrial biopsy. The onset of symptoms took place predominantly in the proliferative phase of the cycle. A negative correlation was found between the serum progesterone levels and the histopathologic severity of plasma cell endometritis. Our results suggest that the hormonal status contributes to the immune response and susceptibility to endometrial infection.

The efficacy and side effects of the oral H1-antihistamine, astemizole, were compared with those of nasal beclomethasone in 158 adult birch-pollen allergic hay fever patients. 148 patients completed the 5-week, controlled trial which took place in Stockholm, May 1986, during the birch pollen season. A case of inflammatory bowel disease with toxic megacolon decompressed by colonoscopy, placement of an indwelling colonic tube through which steroid solution was administered. Toxic megacolon was alleviated, thus suspending the impending surgery. Literature search did not reveal any similar approaches of treating toxic megacolon. This procedure, however, should not replace the proper surgical management of toxic megacolon of inflammatory bowel disease.

The frequency of hospital admission for perforated ulcer was not measurably affected by concurrent use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) during nearly 30 million person-days of NSAID use at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound. Whether patients had ever used cimetidine or antacids, drugs which indicate the presence of ulcer disease or symptoms, was strongly predictive of perforation in the same population (rate ratio 5.1; 95% CI 2.6-10.0). Perforation rates increased sharply with age but were similar for men and women.

Cyclosporine had been used to treat steroid resistant rejection episodes in 24 living related donor kidney transplants. The rejection episodes as well as their response to cyclosporine were documented by graft biopsies and/or fine needle aspiration cytology. An experimental and comparative study was conducted on 1-(p-chlorobenzoyl)-2-methyl-5-methoxyindole-3-p-acetamidophenol acetate (Apyramide) and known anti-inflammatory agents. Apyramide was far less toxic than indomethacin in rats and mice by the oral or the i.p. route. It exhibited anti-inflammatory activity on carrageenin-induced paw oedema, cotton pellet granuloma and adjuvant arthritis, as well as analgesic and antipyretic activities. The acute ulcerogenic effect of Apyramide was lower than that of indomethacin.

We describe a method for the measurement of plasma dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHAS) which incorporates a Triton X-100 solubilised preparation of human placental steroid sulphatase as a hydrolysing agent and a direct radioimmunoassay of liberated DHA using a specific antiserum. The hydrolysis procedure is carried out at 50 degrees C for 1 h and an assay run can be completed in 4 h.
