Expression of CDw29 and CD45R antigens on epithelial cells in oral lichen planus.

The CD45R and CDw29 antigens are expressed on naive and primed helper T cell populations which serve suppressor-inducer or helper-inducer functions, respectively. These antigens may also be expressed on epithelial cell subpopulations. In the present study, monoclonal antibodies reacting with T lymphocytes and Langerhans cells (LC) were used to characterize the expression of CD45R and CDw29 antigens in oral lichen planus. CDw29 was expressed by LC and lymphocytic cells whereas keratinocyte reactivity varied from negative through to full thickness staining. Expression of CD45R was confined to in

The extra-intestinal complications of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis: a study of 700 patients.

The records of a series of 700 patients with inflammatory bowel disease, 498 with Crohn's disease and 202 with ulcerative colitis, have been analyzed to determine the relative incidence and characteristic features of their extra-intestinal manifestations. The group with Crohn's disease included 62 with colitis, 223 with ileocolitis, and 213 with regional enteritis. A consideration of the clinical patterns and an understanding of their pathophysiology suggested a subdivision into two main groups: one "colitis related" and one related to the pathophysiology of the small nonspecific third group.

Prevalence of recurrent herpes labialis and aphthous ulcers among young adults on six continents.

The prevalence of recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) and recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAU) in young adults - - 635 armed-forces recruits and 9897 health-profession students - - in 48 institutions in 21 countries was determined by a questionnaire survey. Two or more occurrences (lifetime prevalence) of RHL were reported by 33.2% of men and 28.0% of women; the corresponding figures for RAU were 38.7% and 49.7%. North American respondents, mainly from Canada, had a significantly higher prevalence of both lesions. There were some differences in relation to profession. Approximately 15% of all the peopl

Pretreatment C-Reactive Protein/Albumin Ratio Can Predict Severity of Radiotherapy-Induced Oral Mucositis in Advanced Laryngeal Cancer Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment methods of laryngeal cancer (LC) often include radiotherapy (RT), commonly combined with cytotoxic drugs. This approach is associated with early adverse effects, notably oral mucositis (OM). The C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CAR) is a promising novel biomarker used to assess the severity of inflammatory responses in various chronic conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive value of pretreatment CAR for the occurrence and severity of OM of varying grades during RT in patients with LC. METHODS: The pretreatment CAR values were calculated in 68

Dental enamel defects and oral cavity manifestations in Asian patients with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: While the small intestine is the main site of disease, many other organs are affected by celiac disease (CeD). Dental enamel defects (DED) are common in patients with CeD, and these are one of the indicators of CeD, even when no other symptom of CeD is present. Data on dental and oral cavity manifestations in Asian patients with CeD are scanty. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate dental and oral manifestations in Asian patients with CeD. METHODS: We recruited 118 patients with biopsy-confirmed CeD (36 treatment naïve and 82 on follow-up for at least 1 year on gluten-f
