OBJECTIVE: The correlation between bone mineral density (BMD) and stroke remains inconsistent. This study aims to determine whether a reduction in BMD is associated with an increased risk of stroke.
METHODS: We systematically searched Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews through January 2025 to identify cohort studies with follow-up that reported the influence of a reduction in BMD or low BMD status on the risk of any type of stroke. Pooled analyses were performed using random-effects models.
RESULTS: This study included 13 studies with 146,758 individuals. A 1 SD…

Stiff-Knee gait is a dysfunction commonly observed post-stroke characterized by a decreased swing phase knee flexion angle. Importantly, Stiff-Knee gait can impair walking, ultimately reducing overall activity and participation. Interventions for Stiff-Knee gait have shown mixed results and, combined with more recent observational evidence, suggest that there are other potential causes requiring the need to re-examine its etiology. The aim of this review is to compile and appraise the current state of the science regarding the neurophysiological and biomechanical impairments of individuals pos…

Walking, a seemingly simple task for many, becomes a challenge for people after a stroke. Typically, the swinging leg kinematics is fine-tuned to provide toe clearance, but reduced knee flexion after stroke requires adaptive gait strategies, such as hip hiking and circumduction, to prevent stumbling. The cause of reduced knee flexion in a dynamic system is unintuitive and often obscured by muscle weakness, hyperactivity, or abnormal joint coordination. Using physical models, we predicted that intersegmental forces may be largely responsible for the deficits. Leveraging subject-specific inverse…

The cerebellum acts as a forward internal model to predict motor outcomes, compare them with sensory feedback, and generate prediction errors that refine prediction accuracy. Our physiological understanding of cerebellar function during motor control derives predominantly from animal experiments and clinical observations in patients with disorders of the cerebellum or its connections with the cerebrum and spinal cord. Here, we report a human electrophysiology-based investigation of cerebello-thalamo-cortical pathway activity during motor error detection and correction. Participants performed a

Introduction: Stroke remains one of the leading causes of long-term disability worldwide. Post-stroke motor recovery depends on neuroplasticity, which is stimulated by intensive, repetitive, and task-specific training. Modern technologies such as robotic rehabilitation (RR), virtual reality (VR), functional electrical stimulation (FES), brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), and non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) offer novel opportunities to enhance rehabilitation. They operate through sensory feedback, neuromodulation, and robotic assistance which promote neural reorganization and motor relearn…

This report describes a case of hypokalemia-induced hemiplegia and altered mental status masquerading as an acute large vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke, and provides a brief discussion of stroke mimics. An air ambulance was dispatched to rendezvous with a ground emergency medical services (EMS) crew to manage a 75-year-old female patient with altered mental status and left-sided weakness. The patient was transported to a comprehensive stroke center (CSC), where neuroimaging failed to demonstrate evidence for acute stroke, although the patient was found to have severe hypokalemia. The patient's s…

BACKGROUND: Cerebrospinal fluid and interstitial fluid dynamics are critical for maintaining homeostasis in the central nervous system. These fluids facilitate waste clearance, micronutrient distribution, and provide a tightly regulated ionic environment. Ischaemic stroke, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, disrupts this delicate system, compounding the physiological challenges posed by the condition. Despite recent advances in our understanding of the importance of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF) movement and exchange, the role of this system in stroke pathophy…

BackgroundVenous congestion is hypothesized to contribute to hand edema in patients with stroke; however, no studies have specifically investigated decreased venous return in the paretic hand.ObjectiveThis preliminary study explores this relationship by objectively measuring hand edema and venous return.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included patients who had experienced a first-ever stroke and presented with hand edema. Hand edema was measured bilaterally using a volumeter, and venous flow volume in the axillary vein was evaluated bilaterally using an ultrasound device. Hand edema and veno…

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a major cause of death and severe disability, and there remains a substantial need for the development of therapeutic agents for neuroprotection in acute ischemic stroke (IS) to protect the brain against damage before and during recanalization. Caveolin-1 (CAV1), an integrated protein that is located at the caveolar membrane, has been reported to exert neuroprotective effects during IS. Nevertheless, the mechanism remains largely unknown. Here, we explored the upstream modifiers of CAV1 in IS.
METHODS: E3 ubiquitin ligases of CAV1 that are differentially expressed in IS …

Metabolic disorders are risk factors for stroke exacerbating subsequent complications. Rapidly after brain injury, a glial scar forms, preventing excessive inflammation and limiting axonal regeneration. Despite the growing interest in wound healing following brain injury, the formation of a glial scar in the context of metabolic disorders is poorly documented. In this study, we used db/db mice to investigate the impact of metabolic perturbations on brain repair mechanisms, with a focus on glial scarring. First, we confirmed the development of obesity, poor glucose regulation, hyperglycaemia an…

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor-dependent excitotoxicity is one of the most important mechanisms underlying stroke injury and the resulting neuronal death. In the present study, in order to reduce post-stroke brain injury and improve behavioral performance, a new molecule named IC87201, which acts as an inhibitor of PSD95/nNOS interaction in the intracellular signaling pathway of NMDA receptors, was administered. Using the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) technique, 24 adult male rats were subjected to one hour of cerebral ischemia. Animals were randomly divided into sham, MCAO, MCAO + DX…

AIMS: With the progress of thrombectomy technology, the vascular recanalization rate of patients with stroke has been continuously improved, but the proportion of futile recanalization (FR) is still quite a few. The long-term prognosis and survival of patients with FR and its influencing factors remain unclear.

Stroke is a devastating disease with high morbidity, disability, and mortality, among which ischemic stroke is more common. However, there is still a lack of effective methods to improve the prognosis and reduce the incidence of its complications. At present, there is evidence that peripheral organs are involved in the inflammatory response after stroke. Moreover, the interaction between central and peripheral inflammation includes the activation of resident and peripheral immune cells, as well as the activation of inflammation-related signaling pathways, which all play an important role in th…
