Applications of Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration Membrane Process in Wine and Beer Industry.

Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes are traditionally employed in wine and beer production for concentration, clarification, and stabilization. Their applications now extend to dealcoholization, addressing rising demand for low-alcohol beverages. RO/NF selectively reduce ethanol while retaining volatile aromas and non-volatile flavors, outperforming thermal methods that degrade sensory profiles. This review examines RO/NF roles in alcohol adjustment, sugar modification, and by-product recovery, emphasizing mechanisms and efficiency. Operational challenges such as membrane fo

A Comprehensive Evaluation of Microbial Synergistic Metabolic Mechanisms and Health Benefits in Kombucha Fermentation: A Review.

Kombucha, a traditional fermented beverage, has become an important topic in global health beverage research due to its potential health benefits. The aim of this review is to integrate the existing literature and analyze the interactions among microbial communities during the fermentation process of kombucha, especially how Saccharomyces, Acetobacter, and Lactobacillus generate bioactive components with health benefits through the cascade reaction in sugar metabolism-ethanol oxidation-organic acid accumulation. We also focus on the effects of fermentation conditions (e.g., time, temperature,

Heteromultivalent Nanogels as Highly Potent Inhibitors of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa.

The increasing prevalence of microbial resistance requires new antibacterial concepts for selective targeting and killing of pathogenic bacteria. Here, we report the synthesis of a heteromultivalent nanogel system against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). These nanogels are based on biocompatible polyglycerols and functionalized with sugar ligands fucose (Fuc) or galactose (Gal) for P. aeruginosa targeting. With a further modification of these nanogels with BMAP-18 short chain peptides (GRFKRFRKKFKKLFKKLS), we have achieved > 99.99% inactivation of planktonic and > 99.9% inactivation of

Genetic and Environmental Factors Contributing to the Pathogenesis of Vertebral Osteomyelitis Caused by Enterococcus cecorum in Broiler Chicken.

Enterococcus cecorum (EC) is the primary cause of Vertebral Osteomyelitis (VO) in poultry, characterized by a hock-sitting posture with legs extended forward. The disease begins with intestinal colonization, where pathogenic strains of E. cecorum establish themselves in the gut within the first week of a bird's lifecycle and translocate to the bloodstream later, reaching the organs, which finally infect the birds' Free Thoracic Vertebrae (FTV). Several factors contribute to the initiation and progression of the disease. Environmental factors such as heat stress, high blood sugar levels, prior

Incidental Adrenal Histoplasmosis Revealed by FAPI PET-CT in an Immunocompetent Patient.

A 77-year-old male presented with pyrexia of unknown origin. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed adrenal lesions, a suspicion of neoplasia was raised, and Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG PET-CT) was recommended. Since the patient had uncontrolled diabetes (Fasting Blood Sugar - 326 mg/dL), FDG-PET was not feasible. The patient, therefore, underwent Ga68-Fibroblast Activating Protein Inhibitor - 46 PET-CT (FAPI PET-CT). Scan showed high-grade Fibroblast Activating Protein (FAP) expression in bilateral enlarged adrenals. Findings appeared atypical for malignancy and the po

Fecal prevalence and diversity of endoparasites in shelter dogs and cats from East Tennessee.

Shelter animals are infected with a variety of endoparasites, and infections vary in severity and zoonotic potential. Data on parasite prevalence in Tennessee shelter animals are severely lacking. Fecal samples from 1111 dogs and 605 cats were collected from animal shelters from 2010 to 2023. Centrifugal fecal flotations using two separate solutions (Sheather's sugar and zinc sulfate) were performed, and parasites were identified to genus or species when possible. In total 43.5 % (263/605) of cats and 59.2 % (658/1111) of dogs were positive for at least one parasite on fecal flotation. Ancylos

2-Deoxy-4-epi-scyllo-inosose (DEI) is the Product of EboD, a Highly Conserved Dehydroquinate Synthase-like Enzyme in Bacteria and Eustigmatophyte Algae.

A cryptic cluster of genes, known as the ebo cluster, has been found in a variety of genomic contexts among bacteria and algae. In Pseudomonas fluorescens NZI7, the ebo cluster (a.k.a. EDB cluster) is involved in the bacterial repellent mechanism against nematode grazing. In cyanobacteria, the cluster plays a role in the transport of the scytonemin monomer from the cytosol to the periplasm. Despite their broad distribution and interesting phenotypes, neither the pathway nor the functions of the enzymes are known. Here we show that EboD proteins from the ebo clusters in Nostoc punctiforme and S

Super-resolution imaging of urethral vasculature in healthy pre- and post-menopausal females.

Previous studies have postulated that the urethral vasculature (UV) might play an important role in urinary continence for women. The goal of this research was to compare the UV in pre- and post-menopausal women using a super-resolution ultrasound imaging method called Super Ultrasound for Greater Accuracy and Resolution (SUGAR). We found that post-menopausal women exhibited decreased UV parameters such as fractal dimension, vessel proportion, and mean blood vessel diameter than pre-menopausal women. We also discriminated the vascular pattern in several layers of the urethra and its surroundin

Thymus atlanticus: A Source of Nutrients with Numerous Health Benefits and Important Therapeutic Potential for Age-Related Diseases.

Thymus atlanticus (Lamiaceae) is a plant endemic to the Mediterranean basin that is found in significant quantities in the arid regions of Morocco. Thymus atlanticus is used in traditional medicine to treat infectious and non-infectious diseases. It is also used for the isolation of essential oils and for the seasoning of many dishes in the Mediterranean diet. The major constituents of Thymus atlanticus are saponins, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, various simple and hydroxycinnamic phenolic compounds, and terpene compounds. Several of these compounds act on signaling pathways of oxidative str

You Are What You Eat: A Review on Dietary Interventions for Treating Pediatric Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

As the obesity pandemic worsens, cases of pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and complications of this disease, such as progressive liver failure, in young adults will continue to rise. Lifestyle changes in the form of dietary modifications and exercise are currently first-line treatments. Large pediatric-specific randomized controlled trials to support specific interventions are currently lacking. A variety of dietary modifications in children with NAFLD have been suggested and studied with mixed results, including low-sugar and high-protein diets, the Mediterranean diet, and

When dysbiosis meets dystrophy: an unwanted gut-muscle connection.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a devastating neuromuscular degenerative disease with no known cure to date. In recent years, the hypothesis of a "gut-muscle axis" has emerged suggesting that bidirectional communication between the gut microbiota and the muscular system regulates the muscular function and may be perturbed in several muscular disorders. In addition, the excessive consumption of sugar and of lipid-rich processed food products are factors that further aggravate the phenotype for such diseases and accelerate biological aging. However, these unhealthy microbiota profiles can b

Blood-brain barrier penetration of non-replicating SARS-CoV-2 and S1 variants of concern induce neuroinflammation which is accentuated in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

COVID-19 and especially Long COVID are associated with severe CNS symptoms and may place persons at risk to develop long-term cognitive impairments. Here, we show that two non-infective models of SARS-CoV-2 can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and induce neuroinflammation, a major mechanism underpinning CNS and cognitive impairments, even in the absence of productive infection. The viral models cross the BBB by the mechanism of adsorptive transcytosis with the sugar N-acetylglucosamine being key. The delta and omicron variants cross the BB B faster than the other variants of concern, with p

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia sepsis in preterm neonates.

Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, an environmentally ubiquitous microbe, is a challenging opportunistic pathogen in the hospital setting. Neonates are particularly vulnerable to infection with Stenotrophomonas but information on presentation, therapeutic response and outcome of such infection in this population is limited. To expand this knowledge, we report here a series of five cases. All the five neonates having S. maltophilia sepsis, were preterms (27-32 weeks), very low birth weight, with clinical presentation within three weeks of life, with respiratory involvement presenting as respiratory

Food-grade xylitol production from corncob biomass with acute oral toxicity studies.

Xylitol, a sugar substitute, is widely used in various food formulations and finds a steady global market. In this study, xylitol crystals were produced from corncob by fermentation (as an alternative to the chemical catalytic process) by a GRAS yeast Pichia caribbica MTCC 5703 and characterized in detail for their purity and presence of any possible contaminant that may adversely affect mammalian cell growth and proliferation. The acute and chronic oral toxicity trials demonstrated no gross pathological changes with average weekly weight gain in female Wistar rats at high xylitol loading (LD5

Aminoglycoside uptake, stress, and potentiation in Gram-negative bacteria: new therapies with old molecules.

(AGs) are long-known molecules successfully used against Gram-negative pathogens. While their use declined with the discovery of new antibiotics, they are now classified as critically important molecules because of their effectiveness against multidrug-resistant bacteria. While they can efficiently cross the Gram-negative envelope, the mechanism of AG entry is still incompletely understood, although this comprehension is essential for the development of new therapies in the face of the alarming increase in antibiotic resistance. Increasing antibiotic uptake in bacteria is one strategy to enhan

Acquired Perforating Disorder: A Case with Multiple Underlying Diseases.

A 51-year-old man came to the dermatology and venereology outpatient clinic with the complaint of multiple itchy lumps on his body. The patient had a previous history of hemodialysis due to end-stage renal disease. He also had a previous history of hepatitis B, an abnormal liver function test, and high blood sugar. Histopathological examination with Masson's trichrome revealed that the patient had extrusion collagen in the epidermis which had invagination. Acquired perforating disorder is frequently misdiagnosed as other skin diseases, thus this condition is underdiagnosed. In addition, underl

Thada Is Dispensable for Female Fertility in Mice.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified THADA as one of the susceptibility genes for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the THADA gene showed significant over-transmission in PCOS and strong correlations with testosterone level. However, there was insufficient evidence to verify the effect of THADA in vivo on female reproductive system. In this study, we investigated the impacts of Thada ablation on ovarian function and reproductive outcomes with knockout (KO) mice. The results showed that the Thada deletion was insufficient to affect ova

An Approach to the Management of Diabetes Mellitus in Cirrhosis: A Primer for the Hepatologist.

The management of diabetes in cirrhosis and liver transplantation can be challenging. There is difficulty in diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes as fasting blood sugar values are low and glycosylated hemoglobin may not be a reliable marker. The challenges in the management of diabetes in cirrhosis include the likelihood of cognitive impairment, risk of hypoglycemia, altered drug metabolism, frequent renal dysfunction, risk of lactic acidosis, and associated malnutrition and sarcopenia. Moreover, calorie restriction and an attempt to lose weight in obese diabetics may be associated with a wors

A conserved strategy for inducing appendage regeneration in moon jellyfish, Drosophila, and mice.

Can limb regeneration be induced? Few have pursued this question, and an evolutionarily conserved strategy has yet to emerge. This study reports a strategy for inducing regenerative response in appendages, which works across three species that span the animal phylogeny. In Cnidaria, the frequency of appendage regeneration in the moon jellyfish Aurelia was increased by feeding with the amino acid L-leucine and the growth hormone insulin. In insects, the same strategy induced tibia regeneration in adult Drosophila. Finally, in mammals, L-leucine and sucrose administration induced digit regenerat

Glycoconjugates, hypothetical proteins, and post-translational modification: Importance in host-pathogen interaction and antitubercular intervention development.

With the emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria, insufficiency of the established chemotherapy, and the existing vaccine BCG, tuberculosis (TB) subsists as the chief cause of death in different parts of the world. Thus, identification of novel target proteins is urgently required to develop more effective TB interventions. However, the novel vaccine and drug target knowledge based on the essentiality of the pathogen cell envelope components such as glycoconjugates, glycans, and the peptidoglycan layer of the lipid-rich capsule are limited. Furthermore, most of the genes encoding proteins ar
