Towards non-wettable neural electrodes for a minimized foreign body reaction.

Functionality of neural implants can be seriously impaired by scarring during the foreign body reaction (FBR). Tailoring of the material-tissue interface is supposed to modulate part of the FBR. Surface structures might physically modulate the foreign body reaction in the acute phase directly after implantation. This work focuses on fabrication and characterization of bioinspired microtextures comprising reentrant cavities with non-wettable surface characteristics. The Selected microstructure patterns were fabricated using direct laser writing and were characterized by means of contact angle m

A DFT study of the adsorption energy and electronic interactions of the SO2 molecule on a CoP hydrotreating catalyst.

The adsorption energy and electronic properties of sulfur dioxide (SO2) adsorbed on different low-Miller index cobalt phosphide (CoP) surfaces were examined using density functional theory (DFT). Different surface atomic terminations and initial molecular orientations were systematically investigated in detail to determine the most active and stable surface for use as a hydrotreating catalyst. It was found that the surface catalytic reactivity of CoP and its performance were highly sensitive to the crystal plane, where the surface orientation/termination had a remarkable impact on the interfac

Inner surface modification of ureteral stent polyurethane tubes based by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition to reduce encrustation and biofilm formation.

Encrustation and/or biofilm formation in ureteral stents are major causes of obstruction and reduce the lifetime of a ureteral stent. In this study, the inner surfaces of polyurethane (PU) tubes (inner and outer diameters of 1.2 and 2.0 mm, respectively) were reformed with Ar, O2, and C2H2 gases using specialized plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition techniques for the first time. Then, the modified PU tubes were immersed in urine for 15 days, and the characteristics of the inner surfaces were analyzed. Depending on the modification procedure, the corresponding inner surface exhibited diff

Acid-generated soy protein hydrolysates and their interfacial behavior on model surfaces.

The present work attempts to provide data to warrant the consideration of soy proteins (SP) as potentially useful biomolecules for practical chemical and surface applications. Despite their sundry properties, SP use has been limited by their high molecular weight. In response to this limitation, we analyze acid hydrolysates of soy proteins (0.1 N HCl, 70 °C) for surface modification. Techniques typical in protein (SDS-PAGE) as well as colloidal (charge demand and electrophoretic mobility) analyses were used to follow the effects of molecular changes that occur upon hydrolysis. Adsorption exper

Combinatorial Design of Slippery, Nitric Oxide-Releasing Surfaces Incorporating Copper Nanoparticles for Blood-Contacting Devices.

Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) remain a prevailing issue in clinical settings. These challenges are associated with the health and economic burdens of complications such as bloodstream infections, biomedical device fouling, and antimicrobial resistance. Nitric oxide (NO) is an endogenous gasotransmitter that has vasodilatory, antimicrobial, and antiplatelet effects. This has allowed NO to surface as a potential bioactive strategy for integration into medical device technologies. When combined with other surface modifications, such as liquid infusion (LI) and copper nanoparticles(CuNPs), t

Carbon Monoxide-Enhanced antibacterial Therapy: Inhibiting bacterial Self-Perception mechanisms.

The expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs) plays a pivotal role in enhancing bacterial adaptability and repair mechanisms, posing a challenge for effective antibacterial strategies. To address this, we designed multifunctional Au@mSiO2-MnCO/IR780 nanoparticles (NPs) that target key bacterial signaling pathways to suppress HSP expression. Specifically, the system leverages the controlled release of carbon monoxide (CO) to inhibit bacterial perception mechanisms, including the two-component system (TCS), thereby effectively downregulating HSP expression. This inhibition disrupts bacterial adap

Novel laser-textured grooves extended to the sidewall edges of CoCr surfaces for rapid and selective endothelialization following coronary artery stenting.

The long-term performance of coronary stents is often compromised by delayed endothelialization and late thrombosis, particularly in drug-eluting stents (DES) that impair vascular healing. To address these challenges, we report a novel micro-hierarchical surface modification that integrates sidewall edge structuring into grid patterns on cobalt-chromium (CoCr) stents, enhancing endothelial cell (EC) interactions without compromising mechanical integrity. Laser fabrication was used to create microgrooves (5-30 μm) with extended sidewall edges, designed to promote rapid EC adhesion and prolifera
