Prevalence of Postoperative Complications of Autologous and Heterologous Cranioplasty in the Pediatric Population: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Cranial reconstruction (CR) is a neurosurgical procedure performed to restore the cranial vault after a decompressive craniectomy. There are contrasting reports from the literature about the complications related to the use of heterologous materials for CR in the pediatric population. In this study, the authors try to better define such a rate of adverse events for autologous and heterologous materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of articles published up to December 2021 was performed. Studies were included if they reported the specific use of cranioplasty materi

Anterolateral thigh flaps in closing large abdominal wall defect after the resection of mucinous adenocarcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: It is a big challenge to repair a large abdominal wall defect after tumor resection, and en bloc resection with vascularized tissue reconstruction might be an alternative to achieve an improved survival for abdominal wall tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of persistent abdominal pain of the right lower quadrant and a mass with dermal ulceration. An enhanced computed tomography scan and biopsy of the mass were performed to achieve the definite diagnosis of abdominal mucinous adenocarcinoma. After four courses of "FOLFOX" chemotherapy, th

Minimally invasive pericranial flap harvest through a supraorbital eyebrow craniotomy: Technical note in salvage skull base reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: The supraorbital eyebrow craniotomy is a minimally invasive approach that provides access to pathologies of the anterior and middle cranial fossae. Vascularized flaps are preferred when considering reconstructive options, however, small incisions may not provide adequate access to vascularized tissue. We present two cases demonstrating a modified technique for harvesting pericranium through an eyebrow supraorbital craniotomy for reconstruction of large skull base defects. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: The first case is of a 62-year-old woman with an invasive esthesioneurob

Optimal Multiple-Layered Anterior Skull Base Reconstruction Using a 360° Suturing Technique.

BACKGROUND: Advances in technique and instrumentation have improved outcomes after resection of anterior skull base tumors. However, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak occurs in 4%-20% of patients. To reduce the risk of CSF leak, we have developed a novel reconstruction technique that consists of a 4-layered graft with patchwork suturing and hard material. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of this reconstruction technique when used for resection of anterior skull base tumors. METHODS: This case series included 59 patients with anterior skull base tumors in whom the 4-layered closure techn
