Anatomy of the Upper Lip and Nose Muscular Bundle Tendon and Its Application During Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair.

BACKGROUND: While several authors have previously described the anatomy of the nasolabial muscles in patients with unilateral cleft lip, some personal intraoperative findings may provide additional information on this topic. The aim of this study is to describe the anatomy and histopathology of the tendon of the upper lip and nose muscle bundle on the cleft side and the role of myrtiform muscles during primary repair of the unilateral cleft lip. METHODS: The anatomy of this structure has been described during primary cleft lip repair, and small pieces of the muscle and tendon of the upper lip

Objective classification of masseter muscle and deep inferior tendon morphology: A comparative performance analysis of machine learning algorithms.

OBJECTIVES: This study objectively classified masseter internal structure and deep inferior tendon (DIT) morphology using ultrasonography and machine learning on 229 images from 101 (DIT) and 97 (MUSCLE) patients. METHODS: Following hybrid feature extraction (radiomics, LBP, HOG), patient-grouped, fold-internal SMOTE balancing, and LASSO-based feature selection, four algorithms were cross-validated under a leakage-free scheme. RESULTS: All four classifiers achieved accuracy modestly but consistently above the one-third chance level for this three-class problem (47.9-54.3%), with no algorithm

Anatomic feasibility of using Shark Screw tendon for humeral ligament re-construction in medial and posterolateral elbow instability.

BACKGROUND: Medial and posterolateral rotational instability of the elbow, often resulting from collateral ligament insufficiency, can lead to pain and functional impairment. Surgical re-construction is indicated when conservative treatment fails, yet complications such as graft failure and donor-site morbidity persist. This study investigates the anatomic and biomechanical feasibility of the Shark Screw tendon as a representative human allogeneic bone screw for humeral ligament fixation in cases of elbow instability. METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were used to evaluate the f

Tissue-specific differences in ECM organization and collagen extractability under estrogen deficiency: A comparative study of skin and tendon.

Estrogen deficiency is known to affect connective tissues, yet its impact on collagen organization beyond bone remains insufficiently understood. In this study, we investigated tissue-specific alterations in type I collagen in rat skin and tendon following ovariectomy, with and without alendronate treatment. Native tissues were analyzed in parallel with corresponding crude collagen isolates to distinguish between collagen-related properties and extracellular matrix (ECM)-level contributions. Estrogen deficiency was associated with tissue-dependent changes, with skin exhibiting increased collag

Acute Effect of Extrinsic Foot Muscles Fatigue on Plantar Fascia and Achilles Tendon Stiffness: A Case-Crossover Design.

Dönmez, S and Varol, F. Acute effect of extrinsic foot muscles fatigue on plantar fascia and Achilles tendon stiffness: A case-crossover design. J Strength Cond Res 40(9): e926-e931, 2026-The extrinsic foot muscles (EFMs) originate in the leg and insert into the foot, providing dynamic support and movement. Extrinsic foot muscles are anatomically and functionally related to the plantar fascia (PF) and Achilles tendon (AT); therefore, the tissues may exhibit differential mechanical loading characteristics due to increased stresses in the foot. This study aimed to determine the acute effect of f

Supraspinatus Tendon Thickness Is Associated With Collagen Disorganization in Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Shoulders of Individuals With Unilateral Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy.

Rotator cuff (RC) tendinopathy is a common source of shoulder pain and is frequently linked to structural changes in the supraspinatus tendon of greater thickness and disrupted collagen organization. This study aimed to characterize differences in tendon thickness and collagen organization between individuals with unilateral symptomatic RC tendinopathy, their contralateral asymptomatic shoulder, and asymptomatic controls, and to examine the relationship between thickness (macro-morphology) and collagen organization (micro-morphology). This is a cross-sectional observational study of 64 partici

Biomechanical superiority of partial-thickness tendon split and bridging repair after BPTB graft harvest for ACL reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with a bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) autograft leaves a central tendon defect, and whether this should be repaired remains debated. Conventional suturing techniques often show limited biomechanical benefit. This study evaluated the biomechanical efficacy of a novel Partial-Thickness Split and Bridging Repair (PTSBR) technique compared with non-repair in a cadaveric model. METHODS: Twelve knees from six fresh-frozen human cadavers were randomized to repair or non-repair groups. In the repair group, PTSBR involved a longitudinal

Criteria for Return to Running After Surgical Repair of Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture: A Modified Delphi Consensus Study.

BACKGROUND: The annual incidence of Achilles tendon ruptures has increased by almost 3%. Despite the large amount of data available on post-injury treatment, there is a lack of evidence-based criteria to guide return to running after surgery. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to reach a consensus among experts on the criteria for resuming running following surgery for Achilles tendon rupture. METHODS: Thirty-five international Achilles tendon experts were invited to participate in this modified Delphi study. The study was conducted in three rounds, with a threshold of 75% agreement (or di

Association of GLP-1 receptor agonists with post-operative outcomes after achilles tendon repair in obese patients.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are becoming increasingly popular for managing type 2 diabetes and obesity. Beyond their metabolic effects, they have shown anti-inflammatory properties, which may impact post-surgical recovery. However, their role in orthopedic procedures is not yet well defined. This study investigates whether GLP-1 RA use affects post-operative complications, including wound infection, venous thromboembolism, hospital readmission, and reintervention for Achilles tendon repair patients. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 3

A Collagen-based Scaffold Supports Tendon-to-bone Healing After Rotator Cuff Repair: An Integrated Translational Study.

Rotator cuff tears are highly prevalent among elderly individuals and athletes. They often lead to persistent pain and restricted mobility, and frequently necessitate surgical intervention. Despite advances in repair techniques, the reattachment of tendon to bone remains a major clinical challenge, with high failure rates primarily attributed to poor regeneration of the tendon-to-bone interface. In this study, we evaluated a collagen-based porous scaffold to support tendon-to-bone healing after rotator cuff repair. First, analysis of public transcriptomic datasets from human lesional tendons i…

Polydeoxyribonucleotide improves scar healing following limited scar resection for chronic Achilles tendon rupture in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Achilles tendon rupture (CATR) results from delayed diagnosis or treatment, leading to retracted tendon ends filled with biomechanically inferior scar tissue. Limited scar resection (LSR) offers a less invasive surgical option by preserving and repairing scar tissue between tendon stumps, but the quality of healing remains suboptimal. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) has demonstrated pro-healing properties in tendon disorders, yet its effects on scar remodeling after LSR are unknown. METHODS: Chronic Achilles tendon rupture was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by full-thi

Comparative efficacy of zinc oxide nanoparticles, MSC-derived microvesicles, and platelet-rich fibrin in rabbit tendon regeneration.

Tendon injuries represent a significant clinical challenge because of their poor vascularity and limited intrinsic healing potential. This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the regenerative efficacy of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), mesenchymal stem cell-derived microvesicles (MVs), and advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) in promoting Achilles tendon repair in a rabbit model. Thirty-six adult New Zealand rabbits were assigned to four groups: untreated control, (0.5 mL of 0.2% sterile dispersion), (1 mL gel injected twice within one week), and A-PRF (membrane applied at surgery) group

Postoperative exercise modulating gut microbiota and associated metabolites to facilitate bone-tendon healing in rotator cuff tears.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tear is a prevalent shoulder injury, and postoperative exercise is considered to facilitate healing. However, the effect of postoperative exercise on rotator cuff tear healing through gut microbiota and metabolites remains unclear. METHODS: The control (con) group (n = 10) underwent sham surgeries, while the model (mod) and postoperative exercise (sport) groups (each n = 10) underwent supraspinatus tendon repair surgeries. Starting on postoperative day 7, the sport group underwent treadmill exercise at 10 m/min for 20 min/day, 5 days/week, for 4 consecutive weeks. Sub
