Subcutaneous mycoses are a heterogenous group of infections common in subtropical and tropical regions. These infections have an insidious onset and slowly evolve as the pathogen survives and adapts to the host tissue environment. Common subcutaneous fungal infections include Sporotrichosis, Chromoblastomycosis, Mycetoma, Subcutaneous Zygomycosis, Subcutaneous Phaeohyphomycosis, Lobomycosis and Rhinosporidiosis. Even with rapid urbanization, the incidence of subcutaneous mycoses is on the rise. Confirmation by histopathological examination is necessary.

A 10-year-old girl presented in shock with symptoms and signs of an acute abdomen. Spontaneous rupture of a hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed by ultrasonography in the emergency room and confirmed by a computed tomography scan. Despite contamination of the peritoneal cavity, aggressive resection of the involved hepatic lobe and the contiguous tissues, without chemotherapy or radiotherapy, has thus far achieved a 3 1/2-year disease-free survival.

147 cases of occipital cranium bifidum have been followed: 32 had meningoceles and 115 encephaloceles. Females predominated (69%). 90% of the meningocele and 43% of the encephalocele patients survived. Of the former 48% are normal and 16% are both physically and mentally handicapped. Of the latter only 4% are normal and 26% are physically and mentally handicapped. Cerebral tissue in the sac and associated microcephaly are bad prognostic features.

Gas gangrene infection in burnt patients is a rare but often fatal complication. It may however, be successfully treated by the use of hyperbaric oxygen and later judicious amputation of dead tissues. Five cases of bacteriologically proven gas gangrene, three of whom survived, occurred out of a total of one thousand and sixty-four burns patients treated since 1964 in the McIndoe Burns Unit, and these we describe.
