Detecting Established Glaucoma Using OCT Alone: Utilizing an OCT Reading Center in a Real-World Clinical Setting.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the ability of an optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based reading center for glaucoma (ORG) to detect established glaucoma using OCT alone. METHODS: This study included eyes from 70 consecutive patients with established glaucoma (i.e. moderate or severe glaucoma according to the International Classification of Diseases [ICD]-10 guidelines) and 20 consecutive healthy subjects, who had no evidence of glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) or visual field (VF) loss in either eye. Using a standardized ORG quality assessment, 33 eyes were excluded due to media opacity (12), poo

[Optic neuritis in multiple sclerosis: diagnosis and prognosis data].

The most frequent ophthalmologic sign in multiple sclerosis (MS) is optic neuritis (ON), but internuclear ophthalmoplegia, nystagmus, and ocular motor nerve palsies are also observed. This paper describes the most important signs suggesting an inflammatory origin of ON, most particularly MS. We detail new laboratory exams such as optic coherence tomography (OCT), which could be of potential interest for MS patients. Finally, we summarize the prognosis factors for disability in MS after a first episode of ON.

Leukemic retinopathy and foveal infiltrates.

The authors describe leukemic retinopathy with foveal leukemic infiltrates as the presenting feature of chronic myeloid leukemia. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) features of leukemic foveal infiltrates are presented. Though the retinopathy resolved with remission of disease, visual recovery was not complete due to loss of ellipsoid zone on SD-OCT.

Novel OCT flushing technique for complex scenarios: imaging during iatrogenic transient AV block induced by intracoronary adenosine.

We report the application of a novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) flushing technique where OCT run was performed during transient complete atrioventricular block induced by intracoronary bolus of adenosine. This technique may allow lower hydraulic force needed for contrast flush and reduce artifacts, with consequently improved OCT imaging in demanding clinical scenarios.

Neuroprotective Strategies for Nonarteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is the second most common form of optic neuropathy. Most patients show no improvement over time. Until now, there is still no definitive therapy for NAION. The available literatures on the possible treatment of NAION are quite diverse and controversial. Neuroprotection strategies have been suggested as one of the potential treatments for NAION. This review aims to critically evaluate the literature on neuroprotective strategy for NAION. METHODS: This report was written in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Sys

Morphology of Serous Retinal Detachment in Morning Glory Optic Disc Anomaly in a Patient before and after Treatment with Systemic Carboanhydrase Inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Morning glory optic disc anomaly (MGODA) is a rare congenital defect of the optic nerve head. The optic nerve is enlarged, and its conical excavation is filled with glial tissue. It may be associated with cerebral malformations and ocular complications, whereas serous retinal detachment occurs in 38% of affected patients. Surgical treatment of detachment showed poor visual outcome in the past and conservative treatment options are scarce. CASE: A woman with MGODA presented in our clinic with sudden vision loss due to serous retinal detachment. She denied any previous ophthalmologi

[Progress of ocular motor and structures in multiple sclerosis patients].

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of central nervous system, which often affects ocular region and causes structural and functional changes of eyes. Therefore, there have been plenty of researches on the alteration of motor and structures of eyes by MS. This paper reviews and summarizes the progress of MS-related changes of ocular motor, cornea, structure and blood flow of retina, and optic nerve, and may provide a new insight for related clinical researches. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2020, 56: 711-715).

Myopic optic disc changes and its role in glaucoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optic nerve head (ONH) changes such as tilt and torsion are associated with the progression of myopia, and may in turn predispose toward glaucoma. At the same time, these ONH deformations also make the structural assessment for glaucoma difficult. Here, we review the mechanisms and changes to the myopic optic disc, and the advances in structural imaging to better evaluate the ONH in myopia. RECENT FINDINGS: The distance, depth, and angle between the optic disc and the deepest point of the elongated eyeball may be related to the degree and direction of optic disc tilt and to

[Case report on OCT findings in a patient with hereditary optic neuropathy and a patient with autosomal dominant optic atrophy].

BACKGROUND: Hereditary optic neuropathies lead to a decrease in visual acuity corresponding to a reduction of the ganglion cell layer and the nerve fibre layer. The most common neuropathies, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA), are mitochondrial disorders. CASE REPORT: We describe two cases, one with LHON and one with ADOA, and demonstrate the decrease in thickness of the ganglion cell layer using spectral domain OCT (optical coherence tomography). RESULTS: In the case with LHON, the ganglion cell layer and the nerve fibre layer showed a consi

Optic disk drusen in children.

Optic disk drusen occur in 0.4% of children and consist of acellular intracellular and extracellular deposits that often become calcified over time. They are typically buried early in life and generally become superficial, and therefore visible, later in childhood, at the average age of 12 years. Their main clinical significance lies in the ability of optic disk drusen, particularly when buried, to simulate true optic disk edema. Misdiagnosing drusen as true disk edema may lead to an invasive and unnecessary workup for elevated intracranial pressure. Ancillary testing, including ultrasonograph

An insight into the pathogenesis of optic disc pit-associated maculopathy with enhanced depth imaging.

IMPORTANCE: Optic disc pit with associated maculopathy is a known entity. However, controversy exists regarding the source of subretinal fluid in these cases. In our series, we attempted to analyze the morphologic changes seen in the optic disc pit and evaluate the source of subretinal fluid. OBSERVATIONS: In this prospective observational case series of 4 patients with optic pit maculopathy, a complete ophthalmic evaluation, with fundus color photography and enhanced depth imaging spectral-domain optical coherence tomography scanning of the optic disc, was carried out between January 2013 an

FMT-XCT: in vivo animal studies with hybrid fluorescence molecular tomography-X-ray computed tomography.

The development of hybrid optical tomography methods to improve imaging performance has been suggested over a decade ago and has been experimentally demonstrated in animals and humans. Here we examined in vivo performance of a camera-based hybrid fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) system for 360° imaging combined with X-ray computed tomography (XCT). Offering an accurately co-registered, information-rich hybrid data set, FMT-XCT has new imaging possibilities compared to stand-alone FMT and XCT. We applied FMT-XCT to a subcutaneous 4T1 tumor mouse model, an Aga2 osteogenesis imperfecta mod

Role of Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness and Optic Disk Measurement by OCT on Early Diagnosis of Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Glaucoma is an eye disease that can lead to irreversible optic nerve damage and cause blindness. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows an early diagnosis of glaucoma by the measurements of the retinal nerve fiber and optic disc parameters. A retrospective study was designed to analyze the effects of the measurement of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and the optic disc tomography by spectral-domain OCT on the early diagnosis of suspected glaucoma and primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: This was a clinical case-control study. The RNFL thickness around the op
