Lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin) from individual periodontally involved teeth.

The amount of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the root surface-associated material from individual periodontally-involved teeth has been determined. LPS was found in the surface material from all of the teeth and the amount present ranged from 19-394 ng/tooth. No significant correlation was found between the amount of LPS extracted from a particular tooth and the mean pocket depth associated with the tooth. However, a weak correlation (rs = +0.461, 0.05 greater than p greater than 0.01) was found between the amount of LPS and the % loss of attachment.

Prevalence of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy in Cantabria.

One hundred and forty-four patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) were selected from within a defined area (Cantabria) in Northern Spain, from 1974 to 1984. The series comprises 49 index cases and 95 affected relatives. The prevalence ratio was 28.2 cases per 100,000. The results of the study indicate that the majority of the cases were hereditary as a dominant trait. The prevalence for the Type I HMSN cases did not differ from that of Type II cases. Previous population-surveys of these disorders are compared.

Age changes in residual radicular cysts.

Histological and radiographic study of 33 uninfected residual radicular cysts has shown that there is a slow increase in mineralised deposits within the cyst lumen with time. This becomes prominent histochemically in those cysts more than 8 years old and radiographically 6 years later. It would appear that mineralisation in these elderly cysts is due to dystrophic calcification of degenerate cellular material within the cyst lumen. Inflammation in all cysts, apart from mild granulomatous reactions related to cholesterol within cyst walls, was minimal. Overall reduction of cyst size with increa

Interpreting radiographs 6: Radiology of the equine head (Part 2).

The value of radiology as part of an examination of the equine head is emphasised and the radiological appearances of more commonly occurring conditions are described. Even the normal anatomy of this complex site is subject to great variation and the aspiring radiologist should, therefore, have a good knowledge of the possible normal variations. A flexible approach must be used rather than a limitation to one or two ritual projections. The use of contrast media, wherever it might be useful, is advocated so that the maximum amount of information may be obtained from each examination. Finally, e

Pharmacology of antibiotics used in dentistry.

The term antibiotic is now generally used to include antimicrobial substances produced by chemical means as well as those produced by micro-organisms. They may be either bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal. A bacteriostatic antibiotic inhibits the growth and replication of bacteria thereby giving the body's natural defence mechanisms time to become effective in overcoming an infection. In the majority of cases, and particularly in patients whose natural resistance is lowered by disorders of the immune system, it is preferable to choose a bacteriocidal agent. The first bacteriocidal antibiotic was

Lamellar ichthyosis, dwarfism, mental retardation, and hair shaft abnormalities. A link between the ichthyosis-associated and BIDS syndromes.

There is an expanding list of syndromes that combine ichthyosis with neuroectodermal and mesodermal defects. We present the case of a young woman with the following features: lamellar ichthyosis, dwarfism, mental retardation, nail and dental abnormalities, unusual facies, poor sexual maturation, punctate cataracts, and hair shaft abnormalities. There were no neurologic or auditory defects. Hair examination revealed pili torti, trichoschisis, bright and dark bands with polarizing microscopy, and a low hair sulfur content. The patient did not have aminoaciduria or immunoglobulin abnormalities. W
