OBJECTIVES: To determine clinical and radiographic outcomes of thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fractures without neurologic injury treated by closed reduction and casting. Patient factors associated with poor outcome are identified.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The results of ambulatory bracing, surgery, and prolonged recumbency for burst fractures have been reported. There are no reports of results of closed reduction and casting.
METHODS: Retrospective review of 41 neurologically intact patients with thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fractures was performed.

The treatment included extracting the remaining mandibular central incisor and the 2 maxillary first premolars. The mandibular canines were repositioned to substitute for lateral incisors, and the mandibular premolars were used as canines.

We report our experience using Sarmiento's method for the conservative treatment of 91 consecutive fractures of the lower leg. The mean age of the patients in our series was 34 years. One patient had an open fracture. All of the patients were followed and were evaluated clinically and radiographically 6 to 12 months after injury. Each maxilla is joined to the frontal bone by a veritable fronto-maxillary sutural joint which, in the young subject, permits sliding movements. During growth, the maxilla orients itself in relation to the mechanical effects of the various structures which surround it. The location, below the frontal sinus, of this joint endows it with special properties of resistance and change in position of orientation. These anatomico-functional peculiarities explain certain results obtained by classical heavy antero-posterior of postero-anterior extra-oral forces.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease affects children, mostly boys, in the age range of 3 to 12 years. Severity and duration are quite variable. Catterall's classification of disease according to degree of femoral head involvement is of real prognostic value.
