BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Weak ABO variants may escape tests using unlicensed sera.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Prior to transfusion, ABO grouping was performed using an automated system and in-house diluted sera, and manual and bedside test techniques. Genotyping and sequencing were performed using standard methods.
RESULTS: Initially, the red blood cells (RBC) of the first-time blood donor were typed as B, but pretransfusion testing carried out using the bedside test indicated the presence of an additional A phenotype. Serological re-examination confirmed the bedside test results, and the alle

Ninety-one of 330 fetuses undergoing intrauterine fetal transfusion (IUT) had sufficient residual fetal red cells in their cord blood samples that their AB0 blood groups could be determined. Ten of the 91 (11%) were AB0 incompatible with their mothers. The degree of Rh disease was severe in all 10. Three were hydropic in utero; 5 had the syndrome of hepatocellular damage; in 6, IUT were required between 22 and 26 weeks gestation. The expected incidence of AB0 incompatible pregnancies in which the fetuses required IUT if AB0 incompatibility had no effect on severity of Rh disease, is 9.7% versu

Numerous transfusion issues arise in the support of solid organ transplantation. ABO and HLA can cause graft rejection immunity or problems in transfusion support. Blood usage has been reduced by the use of erythropoietin in renal failure and aprotinin during liver transplants. Multifactorial coagulopathy during liver transplant surgery continues to be a challenge requiring close monitoring, however. The beneficial effect of transfusions on graft survival has lessened in recent years, but remains an area of active research.

Two methods were used to determine the incidence of ABO haemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO-HDN) among Hong Kong Chinese infants. The first method employed the Lui elution technique to elute anti-A,B from cord blood of Group A and B babies with a Group O mother, and set out to correlate the titration score of the eluate with the serum bilirubin of the neonates. This method proved to be a failure because of the poor correlation. The second method was mathematical. By comparing the 'expected' frequency of various mother-infant ABO combinations (based on the ABO distribution of our local popul

115 blood donors were screened for the presence of malaria and other blood parasites at the Blood Bank, University College Hospital, Ibadan, between January and July, 1984. 11.3% of these had blood parasites; 7.8% had Plasmodium falciparum with parasitaemias from 0.03-0.2%, and 3.5% had Loa loa microfilaraemia. No other blood parasites were observed. Serological examination by the indirect fluorescent antibody test revealed that 86% of the donors had malaria antibody with reciprocal titres ranging from 16 to 512. There was no significant association between ABO blood group and malaria parasita

Using increased volumens of serum [in the Multiple-Dosage (MD) or a High Dosage (HD) test] with a sensitive manual reading technique all sera of 37 donors of blood group A2 showed irregular anti-A1(alpha1) antibodies. With the same technique, up to 1/3 of the sera of 417 healthy blood donors agglutinated red cells of a selected antigen pattern at room temperature; at 4 degrees C the ratio of positive reacting sera was much higher. The specificity of the antibodies, as indicated by the antigramme type, could be confirmed in the most cases by reacting with a series of known positive and negative

INTRODUCTION: ABO and Rh are the major blood group systems in Transfusion Medicine, the ABO system based on two red cell antigens (A, B) while the Rh has about 50 antigens of which five are highly clinically significant (D, C, c, E, e). These vary among races and ethnic groups. Blood type phenotype incompatibility between mother and fetus may result in antigen mismatch, triggering alloimmunization, and thus causing hemolytic transfusion reaction (HTR), which results in hemolytic disease of fetus and newborn (HDFN). This study aimed to determine the frequencies of ABO and rhesus blood group ant

Records from 506 hemodialysis multitransfused patients were reviewed to evaluate the incidence of transfusion induced red cell allo-immunization. Out of 405 patients having received a total of 6 608 red cell transfusions compatible for A, B and D antigens, only 7 patients (1.72%) developed allo-antibodies which may be attributed to such transfusions. Elaborate red cell phenotyping in un-immunized recipients and selection of blood units compatible for other antigens than A, B and D in an effort to prevent red cell allo-immunization to other blood group antigens in such potentially multitransfus

OBJECTIVE: Fetal microchimerism (MCH) has been implicated in the etiology of autoimmune diseases such as autoimmune thyroiditis. The goal of the study was to reliably estimate the number of fetal engrafted cells and to further investigate factors influencing the development of MCH.
METHODS: Quantitative real-time PCR amplification using Y-chromosome specific (DYS14) and autosomal (beta-globin) loci was performed on thyroid gland specimens. Furthermore, we compared the distribution of ABO and rhesus systems in mothers with and without blood MCH in relation to the blood groups of the children.

BACKGROUND: Fatal hemolytic transfusion reaction due to ABO incompatibility occurs mainly as a result of clerical errors. Blood sample drawn from the wrong patient and labeled as another patient's specimen will not be detected by the blood bank unless there is a previous ABO grouping result.
METHODS: In Hong Kong, we had designed a transfusion wristband system--portable barcode scanner system to detect such clerical errors. The system was well accepted by the house staff and had prevented two BO mismatched transfusion. Other current system of patient's identification may have similar results,

UNLABELLED: Mutations within the genetic Rh system can produce partial deletions of one or more epitope of the D antigen, known as incomplete D. These people, classified Rh positive, are capable of producing anti-D antibodies when exposed to D positive red blood cells (rbcs). We describe the study of a Rh positive, 34 year old, spanish-indian ("mestiza") female patient, in whose blood anti-D antibodies were detected after a blood transfusions. The results of the tests showed a partial deletion of the D antigen in the patient and three of her family members.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The following

Phenotype distributions of some genetic polymorphisms are reported in a sample of 721 diabetics and 515 non-diabetic, non-blood donor controls. Reference is also made, in the case of the ABO and Rhesus systems, to previously published results for blood donors resident in the Durham area. Non-insulin-taking diabetics show an increased frequency of blood group A1 (and A1 + A2) when compared with controls. This difference is particularly marked in male diabetics. When diabetics are compared with age matched controls, the difference is confined to the older cases. It is proposed that this effect i
