BACKGROUND/AIM: Abdominal wall hernias represent a common problem in surgical practice. A significant proportion of them entails large defects, often difficult to primarily close without advanced techniques. Injection of botulinum toxin preoperatively at specific points targeting lateral abdominal wall musculature has been recently introduced as an adjunct in achieving primary fascia closure rates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted investigating the role of botulinum toxin in abdominal wall reconstruction focusing on anatomic repair of hernia defects.

We report on an infant with the prune belly syndrome who was unusual in that the typical manifestations of the disorder were accompanied by an anterior abdominal wall defect. We speculate that this defect may have occurred as a result of splitting of the abdominal wall secondary to massive bladder dilatation and stretching of the abdominal muscles. We present a case of prune belly syndrome in a 12-week fetus whose previous anomaly scan at 10 weeks had been normal. The ultrasound diagnosis was based on the findings of a lower abdominal cystic echo caused by abnormal dilatation of the bladder. Termination was performed at 14 weeks and autopsy confirmed the distended bladder. In addition, there was bilateral hydronephrosis and an absence of abdominal muscles, liver, spleen and diaphragm. A review of the literature indicates that ours may be the earliest reported case of prune belly syndrome.

The initial presentation of a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the appendix can be a peri-appendicular abscess. The abdominal wall muscles can be invaded during radiological or surgical drainage. The management of such a tumour is complex. The resection of a drainage route can be uncertain and R1. In this case, further treatment with adjuvant radiotherapy may be necessary. One possible deleterious side effect of radiotherapy on the abdominal wall is radiation injury to the bowel. As a preventive measure, a spacer (here a breast prosthesis) can be interposed.

Bladder exstrophy is a rare malformation characterized by an infra-umbilical abdominal wall defect, incomplete closure of the bladder with mucosa continuous with the abdominal wall, epispadias, and alterations in the pelvic bones and muscles. It is part of the exstrophy-epispadias complex, with cloacal exstrophy on the severe and epispadias on the mild ends of the spectrum. Bladder exstrophy is the most common of these entities and is more common in boys. The goal of this paper is to describe common methods of repair and to provide an imaging review of the postoperative appearances.

Imperforate hymen in an adolescent usually presents with cyclic abdominal pain or with pelvic mass associated with primary amenorrhea. We present a 13-year-old girl with chronic lower back pain of 6 months' duration as the only complaint. On physical examination, multiple trigger points were detected in the quadratus lumborum and gluteus medius muscles bilaterally. Abdominal ultrasound revealed hematometrocolpos secondary to an imperforate hymen. Hymenectomy was performed, with complete resolution of the back pain.
