A new fluorescent derivatizing reagent, N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-fluorescein-O-acetate, is used for the high-performance liquid chromatographic analysis of amino acids and oligopeptides. This reagent has the advantages of high-detection sensitivity in the visible region, specifically with amino groups, mild derivatization conditions, and little interference induced. The activity of alpha-naphthyl acetate esterase at an acid pH (ANAE) was investigated in 10 cases of hairy cell leukemia. The synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids from acetate-l-C(14) by the isolated liver, adrenal, and aorta of scorbutic and pair-fed control guinea pigs has been studied. It was found that ascorbic acid deficiency does not affect the rate of incorporation of C(14)-acetate into cholesterol and fatty acids by the tissues investigated, under our experimental conditions. The relatively high metabolic activity of the artery with regard to cholesterogenesis and lipogenesis was noted. The elevation of serum cholesterol and hexosamine in scurvy has been confirmed.

The aim of this study was to design and synthesize two new series of pyrrolidine-2,5-dione-acetamides with a benzhydryl or sec-butyl group at position 3 as potential anticonvulsants. Their anticonvulsant activity was evaluated in standard animal models of epilepsy: the maximal electroshock (MES), the 6 Hz, and the subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) tests. The in vivo studies revealed the most potent anticonvulsant activity for 15 (3-(sec-butyl)-1-(2-(4-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazin-1-yl)-2-oxoethyl)pyrrolidine-2,5-dione), with ED50 values of 80.38 mg/kg (MES) and 108.80 mg/kg (6 Hz).
