Acoustic reflex measures of cochlear damage--a normative study.

It has been argued that certain reflex measures may indicate the presence of end-organ hearing loss. It has been noticed that the difference between wide band noise and pure tone thresholds is diminished, that the reflex threshold duration function is flattened and that the reflex relaxation index, as specified by Norris et al. (1974b), is reduced in cases of end-organ hearing loss. These aspects of the acoustic stapedial reflex, together with its growth with stimulus intensity, have been investigated in 25 normally hearing subjects. The overriding feature of the measures taken of the acoustic

[Diagnostic reliability of ipsilateral evoked impedance changes of the tympanic membrane (author's tranl)].

The ipsilateral registration of impedance change is necessary in case of unilateral cochlear or retrocochlear disease with middle ear impairment of the other ear and, therefore, impossibility of contralateral evocation of the reflex. If contralateral evocation fails, moreover, it will be useful in order to clarify, whether the evocation did not succeed or the registration at the contralateral ear; thus enabling a differentiation between lesions of the reflexe's afferent and efferent way. In ipsilateral impedance-change-measurements it should be distinguished between an increase of the acoustic

Validity of intra-operative neuromonitoring signals in thyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Although intra-operative neuromonitoring (IONM) is widely used in thyroid surgery, the validity of the received IONM signals are still unknown. METHOD: Prospective collection of data forms in 29 hospitals from 8,534 patients with 15,403 nerves at risk, who underwent surgery for benign and malignant goitre disorders between August 1999 and January 2001. IONM was performed by indirect stimulation via the vagal nerve and by direct recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation in 12,486 cases. IONM signals were compared with early (<14 days) and late (6 months) postoperative vocal cord

Tip link loss and recovery on chick short hair cells following intense exposure to sound.

Stereocilia tip links on chick short hair cells (SHCs) were counted in the 'patch' lesion produced by acoustic overstimulation. Tip links were also counted on tall hair cells (THCs) immediately superior to the lesion. Eight groups were studied with three exposed to intense sound for differing durations. Three other groups were allowed to recover from the longest exposure for different time periods. Tip link counts from non-exposed control hair cells came from two other groups. Chicks exposed for 4, 24 or 48 h to a 120-dB SPL 0.9-kHz pure tone showed SHC tip link loss of 30.3, 40.6, and 35.5%,

Functional changes in the auditory cortex and associated regions caused by different acoustic stimuli in patients with presbycusis and tinnitus.

Presbycusis and tinnitus are the two most common hearing related pathologies. Although both of these conditions presumably originate in the inner ear, there are several reports concerning their central components. Interestingly, the onset of presbycusis coincides with the highest occurrence of tinnitus. The aim of this study was to identify age, hearing loss, and tinnitus related functional changes, within the auditory system and its associated structures. Seventy-eight participants were selected for the study based on their age, hearing, and tinnitus, and they were divided into six groups: yo

A direct comparison of voice pitch processing in acoustic and electric hearing.

In single-sided deafness patients fitted with a cochlear implant (CI) in the affected ear and preserved normal hearing in the other ear, acoustic and electric hearing can be directly compared without the need for an external control group. Although poor pitch perception is a crucial limitation when listening through CIs, it remains unclear how exactly the cortical processing of pitch information differs between acoustic and electric hearing. Hence, we separately presented both ears of 20 of these patients with vowel sequences in which the pitch contours were either repetitive or variable, whil

Is perilymphatic pressure altered in tinnitus?

Tinnitus is characterized by the continuous or intermittent auditory perception of various sounds (buzzing, whistling, etc.) in the absence of any external stimulus. Perilymphatic hyperpressure is one of the numerous mechanisms which could hypothetically be involved in tinnitus generation. In the present experiment, perilymphatic pressure was measured indirectly using the tympanic membrane displacement technique. Twenty-five tinnitus patients were investigated at 10, 15 and 20 dB above the acoustic reflex threshold with ipsilateral stimulation. The variables Vi (inward tympanic displacement),

Function of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle in phonation: in vivo laryngeal model.

The function of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle in phonation has not been well documented. To date, several electromyographic studies have suggested that the PCA muscle is not simply an abductor of the vocal folds, but also functions in phonation. This study used an in vivo canine laryngeal model to study the function of the PCA muscle. Subglottic pressure and electroglottographic, photoglottographic, and acoustic waveforms were gathered from five adult mongrel dogs under varying conditions of nerve stimulation. Subglottic pressure, fundamental frequency, sound intensity, and vocal e

Mechanosensitive channels MscL and MscS as potential targets for foodborne Pseudomonas fluorescens control with assistance of ultrasound.

Ultrasound is an emerging technology for cleaning produce and surface sterilization in the food industry; however, inappropriate intensity of ultrasound treatment may induce stress responses in food spoilage bacteria and enhance their stress resistance. This study systematically evaluated roles of mechanosensitive (MS) channel proteins: MscL and MscS on ultrasonic stress responses in Pseudomonas fluorescens as a typical bacterium leading to food spoilage. The MS channel proteins deletion mutants of P. fluorescens ATCC 13525 were initially constructed, including ΔmscL, ΔmscS, and ΔmscL ΔmscS. M

Adaptive fusion of accelerometer and ultrasound signals for real-time motion tracking in therapeutic ultrasound stimulation.

Objective. Ultrasound (US) stimulation of the spleen has shown promise in activating anti-inflammatory neural reflexes for treating conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and sepsis. However, clinical translation remains challenging due to respiratory-induced motion, which risks off-target stimulation and often requires manual adjustment. While US imaging offers key advantages, tracking reliability is reduced by acoustic window loss and occlusion. This study introduces a robust tracking framework that enhances US-based motion monitoring via adaptive sensor fusion.Approach. A wearable accelero

The Source of Hemisensory Disturbances in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: In complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), sensory deficits and/or hyperalgesia often extend beyond the affected limb to encompass other sites on the ipsilateral side of the body. The aim of this study was to determine whether hyperalgesia in the ipsilateral forehead reflects disinhibition and/or sensitization of trigeminal afferent or second-order neurons on the CRPS-affected side. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: To investigate this, blink reflexes to supraorbital electrical stimuli (a 2 mA triple pulse delivered using a concentric electrode) were recorded bilaterally in 30 CRPS patient

Correlation between maternal anxiety, reactivity of fetal cerebral circulation to auditory stimulation, and birth outcome in normotensive and gestational hypertensive women.

This study investigated the correlation between maternal anxiety and blood flow changes through the fetal middle cerebral artery (MCA) after defined acoustic stimulation in 43 normotensive (C) and 40 gestational hypertensive (GH) subjects. Neonatal outcomes (gestational age at birth, Apgar score, birth weight) in the C and GH groups were analyzed. State (STAI-S) and trait (STAI-T) anxiety was assessed using Spielberger's questionnaire. The MCA blood flow was assessed once between 28 and 41 weeks of gestation using color Doppler ultrasound before and after application of defined acoustic stimul…

[The impact of vibratory stimulation therapy on voice quality in hyperfunctional occupational dysphonia].

UNLABELLED: Hyperfunctional dysphonia is the most frequent type of occupational functional dysphonia. Pharmacotherapy, physiotherapy and psychotherapy are used in the treatment of occupational dysphonia. Vibratory massages of the regions of the larynx relax the external muscles of neck, which have an indirect impact on the tension of the vocal folds. PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to assess the impact of vibratory stimulation therapy on voice quality in patients with hyperfunctional occupational dysphonia treated pharmacologically. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty patients with hyperfunctional

Contralateral suppression of otoacoustic emissions: input-output functions in neonates.

BACKGROUND: The literature suggests that contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) alters the amplitude of the distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), but it is still unknown whether the DPOAE Input/Output (I/O) functions are also affected. To elucidate this aspect of the DPOAEs, the present study assessed the effects of CAS on DPOAE I/O functions at the frequencies of 2 kHz and 4 kHz, in a sample of term neonatal subjects. MATERIAL/METHODS: Sixty randomly selected neonates were included in the study. The DPOAE I/O functions were obtained at 2 kHz and 4 kHz, in the presence of a 60 …

Specific activation of operculum 3 (OP3) brain region during provoked tinnitus-related phantom auditory perceptions in humans.

The phantom sound perception mechanism by which a sound perception occurs without any external sound source is still enigmatic. According to our previous fMRI study, a small region in the parietal operculum 3 was hyperactivated as a function of tinnitus periodicity in subjects with acoustic trauma tinnitus sequelae. This region was localized in the vicinity of neural correlates of middle-ear tympano-ossicular chain movements due to pressure variations. Disturbed proprioceptors are known to trigger illusory perceptions; therefore, we hypothesized that a disturbance of middle-ear proprioceptors

Rapid Characterization of Middle-Ear Muscle Reflexes Using Swept Elicitors.

PURPOSE: We describe a novel paradigm for evoking and measuring middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR), in which a train of broadband clicks act as probes, while a broadband noise elicitor is continuously swept in both ascending and descending sound levels. A new measure, total change, incorporates both magnitude and phase to quantify MEMR in a way that promotes meaningful averaging across a wide range of sound levels and frequencies. The aims of the study were to assess the retest reliability of the new swept-elicitor MEMR paradigm, to compare results with those obtained using traditional discrete-e

Pitch strength of normal and dysphonic voices.

Two sounds with the same pitch may vary from each other based on saliency of their pitch sensation. This perceptual attribute is called "pitch strength." The study of voice pitch strength may be important in quantifying of normal and pathological qualities. The present study investigated how pitch strength varies across normal and dysphonic voices. A set of voices (vowel /a/) selected from the Kay Elemetrics Disordered Voice Database served as the stimuli. These stimuli demonstrated a wide range of voice quality. Ten listeners judged the pitch strength of these stimuli in an anchored magnitude

Acoustic and physiologic aspects of bone conduction hearing.

Bone conduction (BC) is the way sound energy is transmitted by the skull bones to the cochlea causing a sound perception. Even if the BC sound transmission involves several pathways including sound pressure induced in the ear canal, inertial forces acting on the middle ear ossicles and cochlear fluids, alteration of the cochlear space, and pressure transmission through the 3rd window of the cochlea, the BC sound ultimately produces a wave motion on the basilar membrane similar to that of air-conducted sound. The efficiency of the BC stimulation is largely dependent on the skull bone where the
