Psychological State after an Acute Coronary Syndrome: Impact of Physical Limitations.

The aim of this study was to investigate how physical limitations after ACS influence patients' quality of life and health perception. This was a longitudinal clinical study. We recruited 146 patients diagnosed with ACS. The patients performed a stress test (Bruce's protocol) for the evaluation of physical limitations and were classified according to the test result: without physical limitations (more than 10 METS), with some physical limitations (7 to 9 METS), and with high physical limitations (less than 6 METS). Significant differences were found between the three groups immediately after t

Adaptations for social cognition in the primate brain.

Studies of the factors affecting reproductive success in group-living monkeys have traditionally focused on competitive traits, like the acquisition of high dominance rank. Recent research, however, indicates that the ability to form cooperative social bonds has an equally strong effect on fitness. Two implications follow. First, strong social bonds make individuals' fitness interdependent and the 'free-rider' problem disappears. Second, individuals must make adaptive choices that balance competition and cooperation-often with the same partners. The proximate mechanisms underlying these behavi

Gut microbial remodeling as an ecological strategy for host metabolic management under environmental stress on the Xizang Plateau.

The adaptive responses of gut bacteria and host metabolism in Xizang sheep to the decline in forage quality and the extremehigh-altitude environment remain largely unclear. This study utilized Xizang sheep as a model, and employed 16S rRNA sequencing, metabolomics, and RT-qPCR to investigate changes in the composition and functional pathways of the gut bacteria, as well as hepatic and muscular metabolism, in response to these stressors. The results indicated that in response to these stressors, the complexity of the gut microbial network in Xizang sheep was reduced, yet the overall positive co

Phenotypic evaluation of local rice (Oryza sativa L.) landraces for tolerance to submergence stress.

Rice seedlings are often subjected to abiotic stresses, particularly flooding and submergence in lowland areas, highlighting the need to develop genotypes with improved tolerance to these conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the submergence tolerance of seven rice genotypes and identify adaptive traits associated with survival under complete submergence. Seven genotypes were phenotypically evaluated under complete submergence (155 cm water depth, 10 days) in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with nine replications. After a seven-day recovery period, the landraces were evaluated for surv

The pivotal discovery of a major plant adaptation to a changing climate.

The discovery of the C4 pathway laid the foundations of a revolution in plant biochemistry. The Hatch and Slack paper published in the Biochemical Journal described a specialized pathway of photosynthetic metabolism that minimizes the loss of carbon and nitrogen to maximize efficiency in hot, dry environments. Since that time, there has been an enormous increase in our understanding of the anatomical and biochemical modifications that facilitate C4 photosynthesis in different species. A key feature is the concentration of CO2 in the vicinity of the carboxylating enzyme ribulose-1,5-bisphosphat

Role of Phenotypic Switching in the Adaptive Response of Candida tropicalis to Hyperosmotic Stress.

Phenotypic switching in Candida tropicalis influences virulence and fitness attributes, aiding host colonization by yeast. This study assessed the role of phenotypic switching in hyperosmotic stress adaptation. Two C. tropicalis strains (49.07 and 100.10), each with five morphotypes, were exposed to 1 M NaCl for 10 and 60 min. Results showed that 62.5% of morphotypes were less sensitive to osmotic shock, and 50% had greater osmoadaptation. The crepe morphotype exhibited less cell damage. Changes in cell wall composition, porosity, and expression of EFG1, WOR1, and HOG1 were observed. Phenotypi

Transcriptome analysis of a wild bird reveals physiological responses to the urban environment.

Identifying the molecular basis of environmentally induced phenotypic variation presents exciting opportunities for furthering our understanding of how ecological processes and the environment can shape the phenotype. Urban and rural environments present free-living organisms with different challenges and opportunities, which have marked consequences for the phenotype, yet little is known about responses at the molecular level. We characterised transcriptomes from an urban and a rural population of great tits Parus major, demonstrating striking differences in gene expression profiles in both b

Staying Alive: Vibrio cholerae's Cycle of Environmental Survival, Transmission, and Dissemination.

Infectious diseases kill nearly 9 million people annually. Bacterial pathogens are responsible for a large proportion of these diseases, and the bacterial agents of pneumonia, diarrhea, and tuberculosis are leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Increasingly, the crucial role of nonhost environments in the life cycle of bacterial pathogens is being recognized. Heightened scrutiny has been given to the biological processes impacting pathogen dissemination and survival in the natural environment, because these processes are essential for the transmission of pathogenic bacteria to new

Terrestrial stress analogs for spaceflight associated immune system dysregulation.

Recent data indicates that dysregulation of the immune system occurs and persists during spaceflight. Impairment of immunity, especially in conjunction with elevated radiation exposure and limited clinical care, may increase certain health risks during exploration-class deep space missions (i.e. to an asteroid or Mars). Research must thoroughly characterize immune dysregulation in astronauts to enable development of a monitoring strategy and validate any necessary countermeasures. Although the International Space Station affords an excellent platform for on-orbit research, access may be constr

A stress repair mechanism that maintains vertebrate structure during stress.

Based on Capillary Gate Theory and Tissue Repair Theory, this paper describes the "Stress Repair Mechanism" (SRM) that maintains and repairs vertebrate tissues. It accounts for most of the mysterious manifestations of allostasis that remain unexplained by Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Axis (HPA) hormones and thereby enables the Universal Theory of Medicine predicted by Hans Selye. SRM activity explains hemodynamic physiology, capillary hemostasis, infarction, Korotkoff sounds, blood pressure, hypertension, diabetes, allostasis, allostatic load, anesthesia, analgesia, atherosclerosis, apoptosis, malig

[Effect of different types of rations on the digestive and metabolic processes in steers].

Investigations on the physiology of the digestive processes in steers fed by varying in type rations were performed. Differences in regard to time of food consumption, rumination, rest, etc. were established also. Differences in lung ventilation and gas metabolism were observed too. The animals daily digested and consumed varying quantities of the ration's dry matter (differing by 15.4%). It was established that when the animals got accustomed to a definite type of ration from an early age a sharply differentiated and functionally resistant digestive activity is produced in them, which is adap

Nutrition for the marathon and other endurance sports: environmental stress and dehydration.

1) During exercise, the body's ability to safely regulate internal temperature is influenced by the environment, exercise intensity, clothing, and the athlete's level of fitness and acclimation. 2) Effective thermoregulation during exercise in the heat requires the evaporation of sweat. The onset of sweating during exercise is triggered by an increase in core body temperature. 3) Dehydration compromises cardiovascular and thermoregulatory function, limits physical work capacity, and increases the risk of heat-related health problems. 4) Physiological and behavioral adaptations help the body co

Human genetic adaptation to high altitude.

Some 140 million persons live permanently at high altitudes (>2500 m) in North, Central and South America, East Africa, and Asia. Reviewed here are recent studies which address the question as to whether genetic adaptation to high altitude has occurred. Common to these studies are the use of the oxygen transport system and the passage of time as organizing principles, and the recognition of the multifaceted ways in which genetic factors can influence physiological processes. They differ in terms of study approach and sources of evidence for judging duration of high altitude residence. Migrant,

Perceptual awareness and motor expertise in the temporal dynamics of adaptation to unexpected tempo changes.

Adaptation to unexpected tempo step changes may vary with perceptual awareness and motor expertise across the post-change time course. This study examined how trial-level Detection and motor expertise, operationalised as professional dance training, were associated with post-change adaptation. Two finger-tapping experiments used unexpected step changes from a 500-ms baseline inter-stimulus interval: near-threshold perturbations (± 10 ms) in Experiment 1 and supra-threshold perturbations (± 50, ± 100, and ± 150 ms) in Experiment 2. Forty adults completed Experiment 1 (21 dancers and 19 non-danc

Adaptation to seasonal drought in Arabis alpina is linked to the demographic history and climatic changes since the last glacial maximum.

Understanding how species adapt to new environments is a central goal in evolutionary biology, and a topical question in climate change research. Here, we sequenced the genomes of 426 individuals of the perennial, Arctic-alpine herb Arabis alpina to study demography and adaptation, with a focus on populations in Northern Spain, that experience warm and dry summers. Our inference supports a scenario in which A. alpina colonized Northern Spain in a range expansion event that started near the Alps around 216 thousand years ago (kya). During the last glacial episode (115 to 12 kya), this expansion
