[Characterization of otorhinolaryngologic manifestations in children with mucopolysaccharide storage disease typeⅠand type Ⅱ].

Objective:To analyze the characteristics of otorhinolaryngological clinical manifestations in children with Mucopolysaccharide(MPS) type Ⅰ a … , and all of these patients underwent ENT surgery before diagnosis. The most common ENT surgery was adenoidectomy. Conclusion:Early clinical manifestations of MPS patients are atypical, but the early and prevalent appearance of otolaryngologic symptoms and increased awareness of the disease among otolaryngologists has a positive impact on the prognosis of MPS.

[Asthma and chronic diseases of the upper respiratory airway].

There is enough evidence of an epidemiological, etiological and physiopathological link between chronic rhinitis (usually allergic) and asth … n the same patient, which suggests a therapeutic link. However, there is insufficient evidence that adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy worsen the evolution of asthma. When managing the asthmatic child, physicians should not forget to pay attention to the upper respiratory tract, evaluating and treating diseases in this area if necessary, as such therapeutic mea …

Associations Between Complete Blood Count-Derived Inflammation Indices and Emergence Delirium in Children Undergoing Adenotonsillectomy.

BACKGROUND: Emergence delirium (ED) is a common postoperative complication in the pediatric population. Although the pathophysiology of ED has not been fully elucidated, an association has been suggested between inflammation and the development of the condition. AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between the development of ED and preoperative inflammatory indices, primarily the systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and the pan-immune inflammation value (PIV) calculated from complete blood count parameters in pediatric patients undergoing adenoidectomy or adenot…

Factor-Based Extrusion Timing of Ventilation Tubes in Otitis Media with Effusion: A Survival Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Ventilation tube insertion (VTI) is the most commonly performed surgical procedure for otitis media with effusion … 2025. Patient-level variables (age, sex, laterality, allergic rhinitis, secondhand smoke exposure, adenoidectomy, and tonsillectomy) were analyzed per patient (n = 150), while ear-specific variables (effusion type, history of previous VTI, and tube obstruction) were analyzed per ear (n = 262). Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression ana …

Versatility and Benefits of 4.0mm Flexible Nasal Endoscopy in 118 Children up to 10 Years of Age.

Purpose This retrospective study looked at the feasibility of using adult 4.0 mm flexible nasendoscopes (FNE) examination under local anesth … lation was seen with the tonsil size (p=0.1143). All patients with OA and type B tympanogram needed adenoidectomy and grommet insertion (p=0.0119), and those with type C curves recovered with adenoidectomy alone. Conclusions 4.0 mm adult scope helped reach a definitive diagnosis for AH in most children above three years of age, thus proving cost-effective. The …

Partial intracapsular tonsillectomy in the treatment of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome: a prospective study with 5-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: To assess efficacy and safety of tonsil reduction with bipolar forceps electrocautery as treatment of paediatric obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective interventional study. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty-three children aged 4-10 years with OSAHS and an apnea hypopnea index (AHI) > 3 were enrolled from March 2013 to January 2016. Pre-operative evaluation included oropharyngeal clinical examination with fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy, OSA-18 questionnaire and overnight sleep study. All children were treated with adenoidectomy and tonsillotomy wit…

Increased anti- EBV VCA IgG antibody levels are associated with need for surgery in patients developing upper respiratory tract complications.

INTRODUCTION: The immune reaction developing against Ebstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection may be one of the major determinants of severe adenoid hypertrophy (AH) and chronic otitis media with effusion (COME) needing surgery. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between these antibodies and the need for surgery due to complications such as severe AH and COME. METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients <15 years old who were admitted to our outpatient clinics between January 2014 and December 2015 with severe AH ± COME and underwent adenoidectomy ± ventilation tube insertion and 129 c…

Pain after discharge following head and neck surgery in children.

BACKGROUND: It is well established that children experience significant pain for a considerable period following adenotonsillectomy. Less is … p was continued until pain resolved. RESULTS: Two hundred and fifty-one patients were analyzed (50 adenoidectomy, 51 adenotonsillectomy, 19 myringoplasty, 52 myringotomy, 43 strabismus, and 36 tongue tie divisions). On the day of surgery myringoplasty, strabismus surgery, and adenotonsillectomy patients on average had moderate pain, whereas adenoidectomy, tong …

Adenoid and tonsil surgeries in children: how relevant is pre-operative blood grouping and cross-matching?

BACKGROUND: As a part of pre-operative evaluation, several otolaryngologists group and cross-match blood routinely for children undergoing adenoid and tonsil surgeries. This practice has generated several debates either in support or against this practice. The aim of this study is to critically evaluate the incidence of post-tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy) bleeding and blood transfusions in otherwise healthy children with adenoid/tonsil pathologies conducted in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A descriptive retrospective study of ch…

Optimizing pediatric tonsillectomy outcomes with an opioid sparing anesthesia protocol: Learning and continuously improving with real-world data.

INTRODUCTION: This quality improvement initiative is a continued pursuit to optimize outcomes by iteratively improving our opioid sparing anesthesia protocol for tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy at our pediatric ambulatory surgical center through data driven Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles. METHODS: From 1/2015 through 12/2023, our standardized tonsillectomy protocol underwent nine procedure-specific perioperative Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, three procedure-specific postoperative prescription Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, and four general ambulatory surgical center enhanced recovery Plan-Do-Stu…

Individual cartoon video for alleviating perioperative anxiety and reducing emergence delirium in children: a prospective randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative anxiety and emergence delirium (ED) in young children may cause a series of adverse events, which are worth investigating. Pharmacological treatments of anxiety and delirium remain uncertain, while non-pharmacological treatments lack personalization and pertinence. AIMS: The aim of study was to determine whether an individual cartoon video can alleviate perioperative anxiety and reduce ED in young children undergoing adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy. METHODS: Children between 3 and 7 years old undergoing adenoidectomy and tonsillectomy were randomly assigned to an in…

[Analysis of polysomnography results between pre- and post-operation in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome patients].

Objective: To determine the objective effects of adenotonsillectomy on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) through analyzing the polysomnography (PSG) results between pre and post-operation. Methods: A total of 56 pediatric OSAHS patients were included who underwent adenoidectomy or/and tonsillectomy and completed PSG follow-up from January 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018. All the pediatric patients who underwent adenoidectomy or/and tonsillectomy during the research period were arranged to take a preoperative PSG study. Patients who were diagnosed OSAHS would be encouraged t…
