Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (AdCC): A Clinical Survey of a Large Patient Cohort.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC), a rare heterogenous disease, presents diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic challenges. To obtain more knowledge, we conducted a retrospective study on a cohort of 155 patients diagnosed in 2000-2022 with AdCC of the head and neck in Stockholm and investigated several clinical parameters in correlation to treatment and prognosis in the 142/155 patients treated with curative intent. The strongest favourable prognostic factors were early disease stage (stage I and II) as compared to late disease (stage III and IV) and major salivary gland subsite as compared to

Preclinical 3D-model supports an invisibility cloak for adenoid cystic carcinoma.

The tumour-cell based initiation of immune evasion project evaluated the role of Gipie in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (A-253), from ninety-six 3D-ACC and A-253-immune co-culture models using natural killer cells (NK), and Jurkat cells (JK). Abnormal ACC morphology was observed in 3D-ACC immune co-culture models. Gipie-silencing conferred a "lymphoblast-like" morphology to ACC cells, a six-fold increase in apoptotic cells (compared to unaltered ACC cells, P ≤ 0.0001), a two-fold decrease in T regulatory cells (FoxP3+/IL-2Rα+/CD25+) (P ≤ 0.0001), and a three-fold

Adenoid Hypertrophy and Orthodontic Complications: An Assessment of Parental Knowledge in Saudi Arabia.

Background Adenoid hypertrophy is a common condition that can cause upper airway obstruction in children and adolescents, leading to various complications, including dental and maxillofacial abnormalities. However, parents may have limited knowledge of the orthodontic complications associated with this condition. Objective This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of parents toward the orthodontic complications of untreated adenoid hypertrophy and to promote their awareness about this problem. Method This descriptive cross-sectional study involved 824 parents from all regions of Sa

Age-related hypertrophy of adenoid and tonsil with its relationship with craniofacial morphology.

BACKGROUND: When analyzing the relationship between adenotonsillar hypertrophy and craniofacial morphology, researchers generally regarded hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils as a whole. It remains unclear whether different enlarged sites of pharyngeal lymphoid tissue would correlate with multiple craniofacial subtypes. We hypothesized there would be craniofacial subtypes correlated with different locations of hypertrophied adenoid and tonsil. METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 466 children (171 boys and 295 girls, aged 12.27 ± 2.69 years). They were divided into fou…

Two Roads to Diagnose Primary Esophageal Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in the Mediastinum.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant epithelial tumor that predominantly originates in the salivary glands of the head and neck. However, ACC arising in the thoracic cavity is a rare entity. Diagnosis of primary esophageal ACC (EACC) involves use of gastrointestinal endoscopic ultrasound fine-needle aspiration; however a low diagnostic yield has been reported in the literature. We describe an uncommon presentation of EACC debuting with predominant airway obstructive symptoms and diagnosed through endobronchial ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration. We propose the use of an endobron

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the trachea: an elusive diagnosis of chronic dyspnoea.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the trachea is a rare entity, with a 5-year survival between 50% and 80% for resectable cases and 30% in case of unresectable disease. We report a case of a primary ACC on a woman in her 70s that presented with a drawn-out history of dyspnoea. She was diagnosed with an unresectable obstructive tumour of the trachea, which required the placement of a Y-shaped stent. The patient underwent concomitant chemoradiotherapy, with partial response, and is still in follow-up, without evidence of disease progression.

The use of SN-5 to differentiate chronic rhinosinusitis and chronic adenoiditis in children.

BACKGROUND: Chronic adenoiditis (CA) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) present with similar symptoms, but an accurate diagnosis is critical for optimal treatment. We aim to differentiate CRS and CA based on sinonasal symptoms using the Sinus and Nasal Quality of Life Survey (SN-5) in children. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. Children (age 12 and younger) presenting with chronic sinonasal symptoms were divided into 2 groups based on CT scan sinus findings: CA group included patients with CT Lund-Mackay (LM) score <5 and CRS group included patients with CT LM score of 5 and more.

A Delicate Surgical Resection to Treat a Proximal Pulmonary Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma.

Pulmonary adenoid cystic carcinoma (PACC) is an exceedingly rare tumor of low-grade malignancy. Diagnosis is often late, so the tumoral process may be huge at presentation. Surgical resection could be challenging, and the recurrence rate would be greater. We report, hereby, a case of proximal PACC with involvement of the carina in a young male adult, without respiratory distress. Surgical resection was performed through a left pneumonectomy followed by a complex trachea-bronchoplastic procedure. During the operative time, the assisted ventilatory mode was carefully chosen. No adjuvant treatmen

A case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of trachea: treatment complications and radiotherapy role.

PURPOSE: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of trachea is a relatively rare malignant neoplasm, for which there is a lack of prospective clinical trials investigating treatment effectiveness. Most of the authors prefer surgical resection followed by post-operative radiation therapy in case of incomplete excision. There are no available prospective data on post-relapse treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: The current paper presents a case of tracheal ACC in a young woman, treated solely with surgical resection without radiotherapy due to postoperative neurological complications requiring additional diagn

Multicentre clinicopathological study of adenoid cystic carcinoma: A report of 296 cases.

AIMS: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a distinctive tumour. Limited studies involving a large population have reported multicentre systematic analyses of the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical (IHC) features of ACC as well as the potential role of IHC markers in the prognosis of ACC. METHODS AND RESULTS: The clinical, histopathological and IHC data of 296 cases obtained from two tertiary hospitals were analysed. The age at onset ranged from 12 to 87 years with a median age of 52 years. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.3. Patients with ACC arising from the lacrimal gland were you

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the labium oris with rare metastasis to the pleural cavity.

A 57-year-old Southeast Asian woman with a remote history of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the right labium superius oris (upper lip) presented to the hospital with vague epigastric pain. On workup, she was found to have multiple pleural nodules. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic ACC. After 8 months of active surveillance, evidence of disease progression was found and the patient was started on pembrolizumab. Follow-up after starting pembrolizumab showed stable disease with no significant side effects.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma of the lung: A case report and literature review.

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lung is an unusual thoracic neoplasm with slow growing and low-grade malignancy. Usually, it is diagnosed at a higher clinical stage and is difficult to resect due to its central location. Herein, we report a 56-year-old man with hemoptysis associated with dyspnea and weight loss lasting for one month. Bronchial fibroscopy highlighted a budding nodular tumor in the left main bronchus. The patient underwent a left pneumonectomy with mediastinal lymphadenomectomy. Microscopic examination showed tumor cells infiltrating the bronchial wall and the cart

Prognostic nomogram in patients with metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands.

BACKGROUND: Distant metastases in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) are common. There is no consensus on the management of metastatic disease because no therapeutic approach has demonstrated improvement in overall survival (OS) and because of prolonged life expectancy. The aim of this study is to build and validate a prognostic nomogram for metastatic ACC patients. METHODS: The study end-point was OS, measured from the date of first metastatic presentation to death/last follow-up. A retrospective analysis including metastatic ACC patients was performed to build the prognostic nomogram at the INT
