Is body composition associated with an increased risk of developing anterior knee pain in adolescent female athletes?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between relative body composition and body mass to height, anterior knee pain, or patellofemoral pain (PFP) in adolescent female athletes. BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain is common in female athletes and has an undefined etiology. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there was an association among higher body mass index (BMI), BMI z-scores, and relative body fat percentage in the development of PFP in an adolescent female athlete population. We hypothesized that female athletes who developed PFP over the course of a competitive basketball s

Development of adolescence-limited, late-onset, and persistent offenders from age 8 to age 48.

This article investigates the life success at ages 32 and 48 of four categories of males: nonoffenders, adolescence-limited offenders (convicted only at ages 10-20), late-onset offenders (convicted only at ages 21-50), and persistent offenders (convicted at both ages 10-20 and 21-50). In the Cambridge Study in Delinquent Development, 411 South London males have been followed up from age 8 to 48 in repeated personal interviews. There was considerable continuity in offending over time. Persistent offenders had the longest criminal careers (averaging 18.4 years), and most of them had convictions

Ethical principles and recommendations for the medical management of differences of sex development (DSD)/intersex in children and adolescents.

UNLABELLED: The medical management of differences of sex development (DSD)/intersex in early childhood has been criticized by patients' advocates as well as bioethicists from an ethical point of view. Some call for a moratorium of any feminizing or masculinizing operations before the age of consent except for medical emergencies. No exhaustive ethical guidelines have been published until now. In particular, the role of the parents as legal representatives of the child is controversial. In the article, we develop, discuss, and present ethical principles and recommendations for the medical manag

Impact of pubertal development on body fat distribution among white, Hispanic, and Asian female adolescents.

Variation in the waist/hip ratio (WHR) may be related to changes in hormonal secretion associated with pubertal maturation. We therefore studied the effects of race, pubertal development, and body fatness on WHR during adolescence in a multiethnic population. A total of 688 white, Asian, and Hispanic female adolescents (mean (+/- SD) 12.4 +/- 0.7 years), participating in the evaluation of a multisite school-based health education program, were included in these analyses. Self-assessed stage of puberty and measurements of height, weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference were obtained

Ego development and self-image complexity in early adolescence. Longitudinal studies of psychiatric and diabetic patients.

Ego development and multiple self-images were studied in nonpsychotic psychiatric patients, diabetic patients, and healthy high school students. The results reported are drawn from the first year of a four-year longitudinal project investigating the psychosocial development and family interactions of impaired and at-risk adolescents. Both groups of patients, especially the psychiatric group, were significantly lower in their ego development and showed less self-image complexity than the high school students. These findings are discussed both in terms of understanding developmental deviation in

Development and evaluation of a patient education programme for children, adolescents, and young adults with differences of sex development (DSD) and their parents: study protocol of Empower-DSD.

BACKGROUND: Differences in sexual development (DSD) are rare diseases, which affect the chromosomal, anatomical or gonadal sex differentiation. Although patient education is recommended as essential in a holistic care approach, standardised programmes are still lacking. The present protocol describes the aims, study design and methods of the Empower-DSD project, which developed an age-adapted multidisciplinary education programme to improve the diagnosis-specific knowledge, skills and empowerment of patients and their parents. METHODS: The new patient education programme was developed for chi

Development and Initial Psychometric Evaluation of the Adolescent Oral and Maxillofacial Health Knowledge-Attitude-Practice and Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (AOMH-KAPQ).

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Existing oral-health questionnaires differ in scope from an instrument that combines objectively scored knowledge with separate attitude, practice, and self-efficacy domains across multiple adolescent oral and maxillofacial topics. This study developed the Adolescent Oral and Maxillofacial Health Knowledge-Attitude-Practice and Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (AOMH-KAPQ) and evaluated its initial psychometric properties. METHODS: A 46-item pool derived from the KAP framework, literature, and clinical education content was refined through consultation with 18 experts and cog

Genome-Wide Association Studies of Delay Discounting and Impulsive Personality Traits in Children From the Adolescent Behavior and Cognitive Development Study.

Impulsivity, often operationalized as delay discounting (DD) and as impulsive personality traits via the UPPS-P scales, is a key transdiagnostic construct across psychiatric disorders. Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have studied the genetic basis of impulsivity in adults, but it remains unclear how similar the genetic architecture of DD is in children. The present study conducted GWAS of DD and impulsivity traits in 5548 children (ages 9-10 years old) of genetically inferred European ancestry from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Heritability estimates fo

Genetic, psychological, and environmental factors are uniquely associated with onset of alcohol use in the adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study.

Alcohol use during adolescence poses a significant public health problem due to its potential long-term consequences on both physical and mental health and increased risk for developing substance use disorders later in life. Both individual (e.g., genetic liability, neural functioning, personality features) and environmental (e.g., parenting, school environment) features play an important role in accelerating or buffering the progression of early alcohol consumption. This study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (Release 5.1; N = 11,868) to provide a compreh

Altered neurobehavioral white matter integrity in preterm children: A confounding-controlled analysis using the adolescent brain and cognitive development (ABCD) study.

INTRODUCTION: Children born preterm face elevated risks of atypical brain development and neurodevelopmental difficulties. However, little is known about childhood outcomes specifically associated with premature birth that are unconfounded by medical complications. This study takes a systematic approach to examine neural and behavioral outcomes in non-medically complex preterm children. The aim is to identify unconfounded neurobehavioral biomarkers and mechanisms that contribute to childhood vulnerability following premature birth, ultimately informing the development of effective intervention

Characterization of somatic testicular cells during human development: fetal, peripubertal, adolescent and adult human testis from healthy and infertility related disease.

The transcription factor GATA4 is found in Sertoli and Leydig cells, whereas SOX9 is exclusive to Sertoli cells, being both factors essential for the normal development of murine and human fetal testis. In turn, the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (STAR) is specifically expressed in Leydig cells. Nevertheless, the function of STAR, GATA4 and SOX9 in peripubertal, adolescent and adult testes in Klinefelter syndrome and azoospermic patients remains poorly understood. To characterize the developmental expression of STAR, GATA4 and SOX9 in human testicular somatic cells, we performed immuno

Development and Validation of Transformer- and Convolutional Neural Network-Based Deep Learning Models to Predict Curve Progression in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Background/Objectives: The clinical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is hindered by the inability to accurately predict curve progression. Although skeletal maturity and the initial Cobb angle are established predictors of progression, their combined predictive accuracy remains limited. This study aimed to develop a robust and interpretable artificial intelligence (AI) system using deep learning (DL) models to predict the progression of scoliosis using only standing frontal radiographs. Methods: We conducted a multicenter study involving 542 patients with AIS. After excludin

Social Cognitive Influences Associated With Susceptibility to Nicotine and Tobacco Use in Youth in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic use of nicotine and tobacco products (NTP) continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Uptake is most common among youth and young adults, but knowledge about effective prevention and intervention approaches is insufficient. The goal of the present study was to examine the impact of social cognitive factors on NTP risk over time among youth in the national Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study cohort. METHOD: Participants (n = 11,880, 47.8% female) were 9-10 years old at baseline and completed multiple assessments of NTP use and related cogniti

Development, Validation, and Measurement Invariance of the Body Image Bidimensional Assessment (BIBA) in Italian and Spanish Children and Early Adolescent Samples.

Body dissatisfaction (BD) is an important public health issue as it negatively influences the physical and psychosocial wellbeing of children/early adolescents. Available measures of BD for this population are scarce, have a significant bias, or only evaluate weight-related dissatisfaction. This study, through the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), aims to develop and validate the Italian (Study 1) and Spanish (Study 2) versions of a new tool, the Body Image Bidimensional Assessment (BIBA), which is not subject to sex-age-race biases and is able to identify BD related to weight and height amon

Happy for Us not Them: Differences in neural activation in a vicarious reward task between family and strangers during adolescent development.

During adolescence social-interactions with other people become more relevant. One key aspect of these interactions is cooperative behavior. Cooperation relies on a set of cognitive and affective mechanisms. In this study, we focused on the mental ability to feel happy for another person's positive experience, called vicarious joy. We investigated the neural mechanisms of this ability using a false-choice vicarious reward fMRI task. Participants played a game where they could win monetary rewards for themselves, their mother, their father, and a stranger. A region-of-interest (ROI) analysis of

Rare variant of HSPG2 is not involved in the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: evidence from a large-scale replication study.

BACKGROUND: Rare variants of HSPG2 have recently been reported to function as a potential contributor to the susceptibility of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in the Caucasians. A replication study in the different population is warranted to validate the role of HSPG2 in AIS. The aim of this study was to determine the association between HSPG2 and AIS in the Chinese patients and to further investigate its influence on the phenotype of the patients. METHODS: SNVs p.Asn786Ser of HSPG2 was genotyped in 1752 patients and 1584 normal controls using multiple ligase detection reactions. The mR
