BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prevalence and type of personality disorders in unselected patients with chronic daily headache (CDH) are unknown. The aim of this study was to analyze the personality profile of patients with CHD is the general population.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-nine patients with CDH taken from a sample of 1,883 unselected subjects from the general population completed the EPQ-A (Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Adult).
RESULTS: Sixty percent of the patients with CDH presented a personality profile with high values in the scales measuring both the neurotic component (N scale

To examine the validity of the syndrome scales of the AMDP system, various diagnostic groups as defined by the ICD were described by these scales and distinguished from each other by discriminant analyses. As a comparison the same diagnostic groups were distinguished using the syndrome scales of the AMP system. The analyses using the AMDP system were performed in a sample of 659 patients of the Psychiatric Clinic of the Free University of Berlin during 1979-1980, the analyses with the AMP system in a sample of 2269 patients of the same clinic during the period 1971-1976. It could be shown that

The authors examined 28 patients with chronic hypomanic states that form within the bounds of acquired cyclothymia after a schizophrenic psychosis. Two types of the chronic hypomanias were differentiated. The first was hyperthymia, a residual pseudopsychotic state characterized with a combination of cycloid and schizoid features with an invariably elated mood. The patients were energetic, purposeful, indefatigable, and industrious at work. No signs of disease progress were observed for a long time. The second type was subpsychotic hypomania associated with a slow, but still continuing progress

BACKGROUND: Both childhood trauma and negative memory bias are associated with the onset and severity level of several psychiatric disorders, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Studies on these risk factors, however, generally use homogeneous noncomorbid samples. Hence, studies in naturalistic psychiatric samples are lacking. Moreover, we know little about the quantitative relationship between the frequency of traumatic childhood events, strength of memory bias and number of comorbid psychiatric disorders; the latter being an index of severity. The current study examined the association

This review provides an overview of the concepts, methods and current status of the development of the Eleventh Revision of the Mental and Behavioural Disorders chapter of the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization (WHO). Given the global use of the current version (ICD-10) for a wide range of applications in clinical practice and health statistics, a major aim of the development process for ICD-11 has been to increase the utility of the classification system. Expert working groups with responsibility for specific disorder

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are common among children and adolescents with bipolar disorder. Among adults, anxiety disorder comorbidity is associated with a more severe form of bipolar disorder and a poorer outcome. There is limited data on the effect of comorbid anxiety disorder on bipolar disorder among children and adolescents.
AIM: To study the prevalence of anxiety disorders among adolescents with remitted bipolar disorder and examine their association with the course and severity of illness, global functioning, and quality of life.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated 46 adolescents w

Background/Objectives: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and psychotic disorders are clinically distinct conditions yet occasionally co-occur in ways that complicate assessment and treatment. ARFID is characterised by avoidance of food due to sensory sensitivities, fear of aversive consequences, or low interest in eating, without body-image distortion. Recent meta-analytic evidence suggests that ARFID affects a substantial proportion of the population and is associated with a considerable social burden. Psychosis is characterised by positive symptoms (hallucinations and delusio

There are strong links between childhood trauma and the risk of violence (Ford et al., 2007). Despite evidence that people with psychotic disorders are at a higher risk of violence than the general population (Witt et al., 2013) there have been few studies that have examined the trauma-violence link in this population (Spidel et al., 2010). This study explored the association between a history of childhood trauma (abuse, neglect and conflict-related trauma) and the risk of violence in adults with psychotic disorders. The strongest associations with the risk of violence were found for sexual ab

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of different mental health problems in men serving prison sentences in Andalusia.
METHODS: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of a random sample of 472 men interned in two prisons located in Andalusia. We collected socio-demographic and general criminal and penitentiary data, and we identified mental health problems with two validated instruments for epidemiological research in mental health: the SCID-I interview to diagnose Axis 1 disorders of the DSM-IV and the self-applied questionnaire IPDE to estimate personality disorders. We analyzed the data (pro

Auditory hallucinations are widely regarded as symptoms of brain disease treated with medications. In an alternative paradigm, voices are understood as trauma-driven dissociated, disowned, or disavowed aspects of self; the goal is not to suppress them but to integrate them during psychotherapy. Auditory hallucinations are common in dissociative identity disorder, borderline personality disorder, and complex posttraumatic stress disorder and are not specific to psychosis. The features that differentiate psychotic from dissociative voices include the qualities of the voices themselves, as well a

UNLABELLED: The mechanism producing psychosis appears to include hippocampal inflammation, which could be associated with the microbiome-gut-brain-axis (MGBS). To test this hypothesis we are conducting a multidisciplinary study, herein described. The procedures are illustrated with testing of a single subject and group level information on the impact of C-section birth are presented.
METHOD: Study subjects undergo research diagnostic interviews and symptom assessments to be categorized into one of 3 study groups: psychosis, nonpsychotic affective disorder or healthy control. Hippocampal volum

BACKGROUND: As an Ancient Chinese proverb says "The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names" thus we must start calling mental disorders by the names of their underlying brain disturbances. Without knowledge of the causes of mental disorders, their cures will remain elusive.
METHODS: Neuroanalysis is a literature-based re-conceptualization of mental disorders as disturbances of brain organization. Psychosis and schizophrenia can be re-conceptualized as disturbances to connectivity and hierarchical dynamics in the brain; mood disorders can be re-conceptualized as disturbance

This review deals with the range of neuropsychiatric problems that may arise from the use of medical and surgical therapies in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. As new approaches emerge, these problems are diversifying. Well-recognized drug-related complications include hallucinations and psychosis and the so-called dopamine-dysregulation syndrome. The etiology of these problems has not been fully established and is not clearly dose related, while the management can be difficult and needs to be tailored to the individual patient. Cholinergic and dopaminergic drugs may both influence cognit

The purpose of this study was to assess medical residents' knowledge of symptom criteria and subtypes of major depressive episode and their accuracy in diagnosing major depressive disorders and classifying episode severity and subtype according to criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. Thirty-five third-year internal medicine residents completed a self-administered, written instrument containing 2 open-ended questions and 21 hypothetical scenarios. The sensitivity for recognizing major depressive disorder was 64%, and the specificity was 69%. The

Prion diseases are a group of rare and rapidly progressive neurodegenerative conditions that may cause neuropsychiatric symptoms. This group of diseases has been described since the 18(th) century, but they were recognized decades later, when it became clear that the humans were affected by infected animals. There was controversy when the problem was attributed to a single protein with infective capacity. The common pathological process is characterized by the conversion of the normal cellular prion protein into an abnormal form. In humans, the illness has been classified as idiopathic, inheri

BACKGROUND: There is growing interest in potential protective factors that may attenuate the impact of psychotic experiences (PEs), but research is still scarce. The present study investigates contemporaneous and temporal associations between daily reports of experienced stress and PEs in individuals at different early risk stages of psychosis, focusing on the possible moderating role of positive affect (PA) in these relationships (within-person moderation). Second, the buffering effect of PA differs across early risk stages (between-person moderation).
METHODS: This study used 90-day daily d

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the reliability of the Washington University in St. Louis Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (WASH-U-KSADS) mania and rapid cycling sections.
METHOD: The 1986 version of the KSADS was modified and expanded to include onset and offset of each symptom for both current and lifetime episodes, expanded prepubertal mania and rapid cycling sections, and categories for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other DSM-IV diagnoses. To optimize diagnostic research, skip-outs were minimized. Subjects participated in the ongoing "Phenomenology and Co
