Treating large acute or chronic wounds remains a challenging task because of a lack of effective methods to accelerate wound healing. Though growth factor-based wound products are found to be effective, they are costly and are potentially associated with increased cancer mortality. Effective, safe, and affordable strategies to tackle large or chronic wounds need to further be designed and developed. Here, we designed a new antioxidant-embedded hydrogel system for speeding up the wound healing process. We prepared multifunctional poly (vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) hydrogels with the

Combining a low-molecular-weight hydrogel (LMWH) with a polymeric hydrogel overcomes the disadvantages of the LMWH (e.g., its low mechanical property) and is associated with the enhancement of materials performance, which is useful in a variety of biomedical applications. In the present work, a hybrid hydrogel that combines dexamethasone sodium phosphate (Dexp) and a polysaccharide (alginate) was explored via a calcium ion coordination strategy. With the addition of Ca2+ to an aqueous solution of Dexp/alginate, the Ca2+/Dexp/alginate hybrid hydrogel formed spontaneously. The formed Ca2+/Dexp/a

BACKGROUND: Understanding the effects of capsule composition and transplantation site on graft outcomes of encapsulated islets will aid in the development of more effective strategies for islet transplantation without immunosuppression.
METHODS: Here, we evaluated the effects of transplanting alginate (ALG)-based microcapsules (Micro) in the confined and well-vascularized epididymal fat pad (EFP) site, a model of the human omentum, as opposed to free-floating in the intraperitoneal cavity (IP) in mice. We also examined the effects of reinforcing ALG with polyethylene glycol (PEG). To allow tr

A great interest has been shown in the injectable scaffolds for cartilage tissue regeneration because it can fill irregularly shaped defects easily through minimally invasive surgical treatments. Herein, we developed a new injectable three-dimensional (3D) alginate hydrogel loaded with biodegradable porous poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone) microspheres (MPs/Alg) as the calcium gluconate container to cross-link alginate. Suspensions of chondrocytes/alginate and porous microspheres turned into a gel because of the release of calcium gluconate; thus, the injectab

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a high morbidity and mortality disease and also demands high economic resources. The standard treatment of NF is surgical debridement and proper dressing for wound bed preparation. The efficacy of silver alginate dressing can inhibit the growth of microorganisms and keep the environment clean for wound bed preparation. However an optimal dressing to manage such wounds has yet to emerge. NF patients who were admitted between April 2013 and May 2016 were randomized to have wound dressing using either silver dressing (Ag group) or normal saline solution gauze (NSS gr

Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I) is an autosomal recessive disease caused by deficiency of α-l-iduronidase (IDUA), which results in the lysosomal accumulation of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) leading to widespread clinical manifestations. The microencapsulation of IDUA overexpressing recombinant cells has been considered as a promising strategy for the treatment of MPS I. This study aimed at the optimization of alginate microcapsules containing recombinant BHK (Baby Hamster Kidney) cells (rBHK) overexpressing IDUA produced by electrostatic extrusion technique. The alginate microcapsule (MC-A) o

Calcium alginate (CA) hydrogels were tailored using phenolic compounds (PC) like, thymol, morin, catechin, hesperidin, during their preparation. The PC incorporated gels show modified surface features as indicated by scanning electron microscopic images (SEM). The rheological studies show that excepting the hesperidin incorporated gels all the other kinds including calcium alginate pristine have similar mechanical strength. The hesperidine incorporated CA gels had the maximum capacity to adsorb Hg. The Freundlich adsorption isotherms show higher values of adsorption capacity for all PC incorpo

Calcium cross-linked alginate hydrogels are widely used in targeted drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound treatment, and other biomedical applications. We developed a method for preparing homogeneous alginate hydrogels cross-linked with Ca(2+) cations using reductive cation exchange in homogeneous iron(III) cross-linked alginate hydrogels. Treatment of iron(III) cross-linked alginate hydrogels with calcium salts and sodium ascorbate results in reduction of iron(III) cations to iron(II) that are instantaneously replaced with Ca(2+) cations, producing homogeneous ionically cross-linking hydro

The oligosaccharide OligoG, an alginate derived from seaweed, has been shown to have anti-bacterial and anti-biofilm properties and potentiates the activity of selected antibiotics against multi-drug resistant bacteria. The ability of OligoG to perturb fungal growth and potentiate conventional antifungal agents was evaluated using a range of pathogenic fungal strains. Candida (n = 11) and Aspergillus (n = 3) spp. were tested using germ tube assays, LIVE/DEAD staining, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and high-throughput minimum inhibition concentration assays (

The relationship of high and low molecular weight mannuronic acid (M)- and guluronic acid (G)-rich alginate nanoparticles as oral insulin carrier was elucidated. Nanoparticles were prepared through ionotropic gelation using Ca(2+) , and then in vitro physicochemical attributes and in vivo antidiabetic characteristics were examined. The alginate nanoparticles had insulin release retarded when the matrices had high alginate-to-insulin ratio or strong alginate-insulin interaction via OH moiety. High molecular weight M-rich alginate nanoparticles were characterized by assemblies of long polymer c

This study aimed to prepare nanoemulsions coated with alginate/chitosan for oral insulin delivery. Uncoated nanoemulsions were prepared by homogenization of a water in oil in water (w/o/w) multiple emulsion that was composed of Labrafac(®) CC, phospholipid, Span™ 80 and Cremorphor(®) EL. Coating of the nanoemulsions was achieved based on polyelectrolyte cross-linking, with sequential addition of calcium chloride and chitosan to the bulk nanoemulsion dispersion that contained alginate. The particle size of the coated nanoemulsions was about 488 nm and the insulin entrapment ratio was 47.3%. Cir

The effects of inulin and alginate on intestinal microbial ecophysiology were investigated in piglets fed a diet (C) with 0.1% alginate (C+A) or 1.5% inulin (C+I) from weaning at day 28. The experiment was performed at an experimental farm (EF) and a commercial farm (CF). Digesta was collected from the ileum, caecum and colon of four piglets from each group on days 29, 30, 33 and 39. The metabolite concentrations changed with age. Colonic and caecal metabolites were affected by prebiotic treatment. Changes in microbiota composition were assessed by cultivation and denaturing gradient gel elect

Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is one of the first vaccines administered to the newborns in developing countries. As an alternative to parenteral administration of vaccines, oral vaccines offer significant logistical advantages. Successful oral immunization, however, requires that vaccine antigens be protected from gastric secretions. In the present study, BALB/c mice were vaccinated orally with BCG encapsulated in alginate microspheres and the immune responses and protective effect were compared with those of mice vaccinated with free BCG by subcutaneous and oral routes. Painful split-skin-graft donor sites remain a common problem for patients. We undertook a prospective randomised trial to examine the comparative comfort and ease of care of two different donor-site dressings. One dressing is the alginate Kaltostat, the standard plastic-surgical dressing in the UK and abroad, and the other is the adhesive retention tape Mefix, a novel use of a readily available dressing. We randomised 50 patients requiring split-skin grafts to receive either alginate (Kaltostat) or retention (Mefix) donor-site dressings. Dressings were assessed by interview and questionnaire a

The urethral stricture is still a clinical challenge, where bioactive scaffold materials capable of providing critical biological hints are needed to help regenerate the function and also reduce excessive fibrosis. Black phosphorus nanosheets (BPNSs) have been identified as promising nanomaterials in tissue engineering; however, their effects on urethral repair, depending on their concentration, remain poorly understood. In this study, we fabricated a porous sodium alginate/gelatin/black phosphorus nanosheet (SA/Gel/BPNS) composite hydrogel patch based on extrusion-based 3D printing technology

Radiation therapy, a core cancer treatment, uses high-energy rays to kill tumor cells but damages surrounding healthy tissues, limiting efficacy and causing side effects. Thus, protecting normal tissues is key to better radiotherapy outcomes. Spacers form a physical barrier between normal and tumor tissues to reduce radiation to healthy cells, vital for protection. However, current spacers are non-degradable, lack imaging capabilities, or have poor biocompatibility, hindering monitoring during treatment and safe metabolism post-treatment. This study developed an injectable calcium alginate hyd

Poly-(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate (PVA/SA) hydrogels are promising tissue-contact biomaterials; however, the comparative effects of different reinforcing nanoparticles within the same polymer matrix remain insufficiently clarified. This study aimed to compare the structural and biological performance of PVA/SA hydrogel scaffolds reinforced with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), hydroxyapatite (HAp), and graphene oxide nanosheets (GONs) under identical preparation conditions. PVA/SA-based hydrogels were prepared using freeze-thaw processing and evaluated by electron microscopy, EDXS, FT-IR,
