BACKGROUND: Few cases of allergy to pine nuts have been described. We report a case of anaphylactic reaction to pine nuts. The patient needed to be treated in the emergency room due to a systemic reaction immediately after eating pine nuts.
METHODS: The patient was studied by prick tests and prick by prick tests. Specific IgE was measured by CAP and by SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting by a diffusion method.

The case is presented of a child who developed rhinoconjunctivitis, angioedema and asthma by sensitization to Sapelli wood, which was used in his father's carpentry. Positive skin-prick test, high levels of specific immunoglobulin E by ELISA and a positive conjunctival challenge test suggest a type I hypersensitivity mechanism to this wood. This is the first case report of sensitization to Sapelli wood and it confirms that occupational allergen exposure as Sapelli wood may also cause sensitization in a child.

Immmoglobulin E-rich plasma from patients from Papua New Guinea infected with Necator americanus has been used to probe an adult N. americanus cDNA library for the presence of hookworm allergens. Using this approach, one hookworm allergen has been identified as calreticulin, which was subsequently expressed in Escherichia coli. Little serological cross reactivity was seen between the recombinant calreticulins of this hookworm and its host. Prospective roles for hookworm calreticulin in the host-parasite relationship are discussed in depth.

Kathon CG (K-CG) containing as active ingredients 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and its 5-chloro analogue, is a very effective and widely used preservative system for cosmetics and toiletries. Of 243 patients routinely patch tested because of suspected contact dermatitis 8 (3.3%) reacted to K-CG 100 ppm in water. Prior to the late 1970s, cosmetic dermatitis was quite common in Japan. Once sensitizers were established, in cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, and other commonly used substances, effective treatment was only possible if the cycle of recrudescence could be broken. The Allergen Controlled System accomplished this by preventing contact with the main contact sensitizers. Although the number of cases of pigmented cosmetic dermatitis has declined because of restrictions on the use of several major sensitizers, the Allergen Controlled System remains an effective treatment for the cases that still occur.

Until now allergic contact dermatitis to polychloroprene glues was thought to be caused by uncondensed p-tert.-butylphenol (monomer) or by the p-tert. burylphenol formaldehyde resin molecule (polycondensate) as allergens. This opinion could not be verified. We found the following two contact allergens: 2-hydroxy-5-tert.-butylbenzyl alcohol and a four nuclear-condensate from four p-tert-butylphenol molecules linear combined by methylene bridges.
