This investigation sought to determine whether detection of salivary IgA antibodies to Entamoeba histolytica could identify intestinal amebic infections among 223 school children. Four groups of children were identified through coproparasitoscopic examination: E. histolytica as other parasites only (20%); and parasite-free (25%). The diagnostic accuracy of salivary IgA antibodies to an E. histolytica membrane extract was 91.5% (sensitivity, 85%; specificity, 98%), maintaining high predictive value at different prevalences. Also, a positive correlation (r = .753, P less than .001) was observed

Amebiasis is an uncommon infectious disease in our region. We describe the anatomopathologic findings of the autopsy of a patient who died of systemic amebiasis, briefly commenting the anatomo-clinical characteristics of this disease and its diagnosis.

A 6-year-old boy with no history of foreign travel had presented with rectal bleeding without diarrhea for 2 months. Despite negative stool cultures, a diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis was made by colonoscopy with tissue biopsy. In cases of persistent rectal bleeding, even without diarrhea, a diagnosis of amebiasis should be considered. When routine stool parasite examinations are negative, unsuspected amebiasis may be diagnosed by sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy with tissue biopsy.

The authors report upon 152 cases of hepatic amebiasis (H.A.) observed in France between 1969 and 1983, among young european men (average age 29,2) who were hospitalised in the initial phase of their illness. H.A. was clinically revealed through a painful and febrile hepatomegaly in 3/4 cases and in 6 cases through complications. No chronic form was observed. The amebic serology (I.F.I. and/or H.A.P.) was always positive. The research of an intestinal portage of the parasite was generally negative. The hepatic functions were impaired in the third of the cases. Whichever technique was employed,…

Two cases of intestinal amoebiasis, one of which autochthonous and the other acquired in Africa, are described. The first of the patients, who never moved to the Tropics nor to Southern Italy, had profuse bloody diarrhea leading to hypovolemic shock; the second case was characterized by massive hemorrhage. Both responded well to appropriate treatment. Infection with E. histolytica should be borne in mind in patients with abdominal symptoms not only if they have travelled in the Tropics, but also in temperate regions, including Northern Italy.

Amebiasis cases in Japan are reported to the government according to the Infectious Diseases Control Law. Previous studies have shown significant reductions in total case numbers after 2018 and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to clarify the recent trends of amebiasis cases in Japan, including during the pandemic period, with details on places of infection, using government surveillance data from January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2022. Change of time trends were modeled through piecewise mixed-effect regression model with knots set at 2018 and 2020. Year-to-year differences in cas…
