This study extends what had been a purely numerical model that used influence-factor matrices to relate the stump stresses to prosthesis loads for unilateral, below/knee amputees. Previously published influence-factor matrices are now factored into a coefficient matrix times the inverse of a stump geometry matrix. Using actual stump parameters, new information is learned about how the resistive moment of the stump balances the flexion-extension moment of the prosthesis and why certain normal stresses reach a maximum during a specific portion of the stance phase of the prosthesis.

Excessive sweating or focal hyperhidrosis (HH) of the residual limb in persons with amputations is thought to be a significant contributor to residual limb dermatoses, prosthesis dysfunction, and decreased quality of life. Treatment algorithms used for HH in persons without amputation do not effectively translate to residual limb HH, and research in this area is sparse. We discuss the long-term outcomes of three patients treated with microwave thermoablation (MT) on their residual limbs who had previously been unsuccessfully managed with topical antiperspirants and botulinum toxin injections.

A case is presented in which, following the failure of several surgical and non-surgical procedures to control the increasingly severe pain in an amputation thumb stump, a toe transfer was carried out, successfully relieving the symptoms without transfer of the pain to the donor site. The centrocentral nerve union with an interposed autologous nerve graft was used for the treatment of 32 symptomatic neuromas in the fingers of 18 patients. The technique was applied to bilateral as well as unilateral neuromas, using the dorsal branch of the proper digital nerve in the later. All 18 patients showed definite objective and subjective improvement, and no loss on the early result (approximately thirty-six weeks) was found in the remainder of the follow-up (average, eighteen months).
