The anatomy of vascular compression in trigeminal neuralgia.

The etiological basis of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is unknown but vascular (arterial and venous) compression of the trigeminal nerve roots has emerged as the likely cause in most cases. Here we examine the evidence for the "brain sagging/arterial elongation hypothesis" with reference to the cerebral arteries and veins believed to cause the compression. Most often implicated are the superior cerebellar artery, the anterior and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries, and the superior petrosal vein including several of its tributaries. The reviewed data suggest that the theoretical support for a

Functional anatomy of writing with the dominant hand.

While writing performed by any body part is similar in style, indicating a common program, writing with the dominant hand is particularly skilled. We hypothesized that this skill utilizes a special motor network supplementing the motor equivalence areas. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in 13 normal subjects, we studied nine conditions: writing, zigzagging and tapping, each with the right hand, left hand and right foot. We identified brain regions activated with the right (dominant) hand writing task, exceeding the activation common to right-hand use and the writing program, both id

Anatomy and surgical relevance of Rouviere's sulcus.

Rouviere's sulcus (RS) (i.e., incisura hepatis dextra, Gans incisura) represents an important anatomical landmark. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of the RS, its description, its location, its relations to the right portal pedicle and to the plane of the common bile duct, and the evaluation of the surgical relevance of the obtained data. Forty macroscopically healthy and undamaged livers were removed during autopsies from cadavers of both sexes. The RS was present in 82% of the cases and in these the open RS was identified in 70% of the livers. The fused type was observed i

Computed tomographic anatomy of the equine foot.

This study describes a detailed computed tomographic reference of the normal equine foot. Ten forefeet of five adult cadavers, without evidence of orthopaedic disease, were used. Computed tomography (CT) was performed on all feet. Two-millimetre thick transverse slices were obtained, and sagittal and dorsal planes were reformatted. The CT images were matched with the corresponding anatomic slices. The phalanges and the distal sesamoid bone showed excellent detail. The extensor and flexor tendons (including their attachments) could be clearly evaluated. The collateral (sesamoidean) ligaments co

An uncommon anatomy presenting with a common disease.

Coronary artery fistulas are rare anomalous communications, between coronary arteries and cardiac chambers and great vessels. They are often congenital, but usually present in adulthood. They can affect cardiac haemodynamic stability and are thought to predispose patients to heart failure, myocardial ischaemia, myocardial infarction, infective endocarditis, arrythmias and rupture. Herein, a case is discussed where a patient with long-standing stable angina was found to have a coronary artery fistula to the main pulmonary artery and concomitant ischaemic heart disease with a chronically occlude

Normal and variant anatomy of the nasal tip.

A thorough understanding of nasal tip anatomy is a prerequisite to understanding the nuances of restructuring the nasal tip. The three-dimensional structural anatomy of the nasal tip is complex. Additionally, the interrelationship between these structures determines the ultimate form and function of the nasal tip. As a result, alteration of one structure in the tip will often lead to change in other portions of the nasal tip. This dynamic concept of anatomy in the nasal tip makes proper alteration of the nasal tip one of the most challenging tasks faced by a rhinoplasty surgeon. This article p…

Flatfoot in children: anatomy of decision making.

Concern about a child's foot posture is a common reason for frequent consultations for an array of health care professionals; sports medicine specialists are often the first to recognize and advise on foot pathology. In the decision making process, it is essential to distinguish between the different types of flatfoot deformity: paediatric or adult, congenital or acquired, flexible or rigid. Although flatfoot in children is a common finding, evidence for the techniques of the reliable and reproducible assessment of the foot posture is scant. This general review presents the factors involved in

3D CBCT anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa.

The anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa keeps a traditional level and is viewed as constant, even though a series of structures neighboring the fossa are known to present individual variations. We aimed to evaluate on 3D volume renderizations the anatomical variables of the pterygopalatine fossa, as related to the variable pneumatization patterns of the bones surrounding the fossa. The study was performed retrospectively on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 100 patients. The pterygopalatine fossa was divided into an upper (orbital) and a lower (pterygomaxillary) floor; the medial …

Surgical anatomy of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris.

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to describe the distal pathway of the dorsal nerve of the clitoris (DNC) from gross anatomical and histological studies of cadaver specimens. METHODS: We performed dissections on 14 intact adult cadaver vulva specimens using 2× loupe magnification and microscopy. The DNC was identified by gross dissection and confirmed histologically by staining with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome (MT), and S100 antibody. The DNC pathway and its branches were followed from the pubic rami to the glans clitoris. RESULTS: The DNC travels inferior to the infer

Perceptions of cadaveric dissection in anatomy teaching.

BACKGROUND: Anatomy professors world over are lamenting about medical students' lack of interest in dissections and its diminishing utilisation in medical studies. The objective of our study was to find out the reasons why some of the Pakistani medical students were avoiding dissections. METHOD: We conducted this study in 5 medical colleges of Pakistan from Dec 2010-Oct 2011. Questionnaires were prepared and administered to more than 500 Pakistani medical students, at least 6 months after their first cadaver dissecting session. Mostly 1st and 2nd year medical students participated in this stu…

MR anatomy of salivary glands in the dog.

This retrospective analysis documented the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearance of normal salivary glands based on 101 studies in dogs with no detectable disease in the splanchnocranium. Surface, signal intensity, homogeneity, structure, symmetry and the relationship of glands to surrounding tissues were noted, and gland topography was assessed with E12 plastinated embedded sections. Signal intensity of salivary glands was isointense (7-40%) to hyperintense (60-90%) to muscle tissue on T1- and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Salivary glands had an increased T1 signal after contrast

Correlative anatomy of the pleura and pleural spaces.

Although pleural disorders are commonly encountered in the daily practices of thoracic surgeons, their assessment can be difficult. Being able to correlate normal and abnormal anatomy with imaging characteristics provides additional information that can be useful not only to accurately locate pleuropulmonary lesions but also to characterize abnormalities, such as pleural thickening or malignant processes.

[Observations on the anatomy and physiology of the mammalian noses].

From the anatomical and flow dynamic point of view, the mammalian noses are strictly divided in a respiratory and olfactory area. In humans, the middle and the superior turbinate (ethmoturbinates) fulfill the respiratory and olfactory function. An intensive contact between breathing air and respiratory mucosa is the most important pre-condition for the respiratory function of the nose. In all investigated species this contact takes place in the functional area of the nose, i. e. the area of the turbinates. In humans, the area from the external nasal ostium up to the head of the inferior turbin

Topographical anatomy of the transverse facial artery.

The transverse facial artery (TFA) is found in the lateral face and supplies the parotid gland and duct, facial nerve, facial muscles, and skin. To better understand the cutaneous vascularization of the lateral face and to better characterize the topography and other anatomical features of the TFA, microsurgical dissection was performed in 44 cadavers. The number of TFAs present ranged from one to three, and a single TFA was most common (70.5%). The TFA originated from the superficial temporal artery at or above the level of crossing by the temporofacial trunk of the facial nerve in the paroti

Head and neck anatomy and ultrasound correlation.

Thorough knowledge of the complex anatomy of the head and neck is essential to understanding the ultrasonographic appearance of this region. The intimate familiarity with anatomic structures obtained by performing surgical procedures makes active radiographic imaging modalities like ultrasound especially suited for use by surgeons. An understanding of the normal sonographic appearance of head and neck structures is critical to recognizing abnormal pathology.

[Functional anatomy of the male continence mechanism].

The basic structures and organs contributing to continence in men are far less well investigated than in women. This concerns anatomical and functional aspects as well. Especially the cooperation of single components and the dynamic anchoring in the pelvic floor require further investigation. An improved anatomical-functional interpretation is needed to generate therapeutic concepts orientated at the physiology of the bladder neck. Therefore, the focus of anatomical investigations should be on the external sphincter which is the main muscle responsible for urethral closure as well as on the con
