Efficacy of single topical treatment of Selamectin (Revolution®) against Ancylostoma ceylanicum in experimentally infected cats.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum, a species of hookworm, is a common parasite of dogs and cats in the Asia-Pacific region. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a single topical treatment of selamectin (Revolution®) against A. ceylanicum in experimentally infected cats. 12 kittens were injected with 300 infective stage larvae (L3) of A. ceylanicum by the subcutaneous route. Faecal samples were examined daily (days 7-15) for the presence of hookworm eggs. On day 18 kittens were stratified by faecal egg count and randomly allocated in equal numbers to control (n = 6) and treatment (

[Case report: hookworm infection in a patient with severe anemia].

In this study, a patient who was hospitalized with a severe anemia in the Internal Medicine Clinic of the Health Research and Application Hospital of Yüzüncü Yil University for one week is presented. The patient had fatigue, paleness and dizziness for one month and approximately 12 kg weight lost for four mounts previous to admission.. Severe iron deficiency anemia was diagnosed in the patient by laboratory analyses. Because there were no hematologic factors associated with severe anemia, the stool examination was also performed. In the Parasitology Laboratory, stool microscopy of the patient

Immunobiology of hookworm infection.

Hookworms infect almost one billion people and are a major cause of iron-deficiency anaemia in developing countries of the tropics. Despite their prevalence and the morbidity they cause, little is known about the immune response to this complex eukaryotic parasite. Recent publications have shed light on the human cellular immune responses to hookworms, as well as mechanisms that hookworms utilize to skew the immune response in its favour. Unlike most other human helminth infections, neither age- nor exposure-related immunity develops in the majority of infected people. A vaccine is therefore a

Epidemiology of Ancylostoma spp. in the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in the Doñana National Park, south-west Spain.

The epidemiology of Ancylostoma spp. was studied in the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in the Doñana National Park, south-west Spain. Faecal samples were collected throughout a complete annual cycle (August 1997 to September 1998). The overall egg prevalence of Ancylostoma spp. was 57.8%. The pattern of abundance of Ancylostoma spp. eggs in faeces was overdispersed. Juvenile lynx demonstrated a statistically higher prevalence and abundance of Ancylostoma spp. than in adults. These levels of egg output (maximum 21195 epg), as previously reported in free ranging large felid cubs, could

Short report: Ancylostoma ceylanicum: exsheathment is not required for successful cryopreservation of third stage hookworm larvae.

Third-stage larvae (L3) of the human hookworm parasite Ancylostoma ceylanicum were cultured from the feces of infected hamsters and frozen for up to 100 days in liquid nitrogen. Upon thawing, viable larvae were recovered and used to inoculate naive hamsters. The larvae recovered from this second group of hamsters were used to inoculate a third group of naive animals, which demonstrated that the originally frozen larvae were successfully maintained for two full generations following thawing. These data suggest that exsheathment, which has previously been reported to be essential for successful

Enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blotting analysis of human serologic responses to infective hookworm larval antigen.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the possibility of using specific antigens for immunodiagnosis of hookworm disease in endemic area. METHOD: Infective third-stage larvae of the canine hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum (A. caninum), were prepared as the source of antigen. Enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blotting (EITB) was employed as an immunodiagnostic method. RESULTS: Two immunodominant bands of hookworm antigens (42 kDa and 55 kDa) were recognized by the sera of hookworm-infected patients (serum dilution 1:200; antigen centrifuged at 36,000 r/m for 20 minutes, but not by sera from negative controls.

Weight loss, total and differential leucocytic counts in mice treated with alcohol during Ancylostoma caninum infection.

Females of Swiss albino mice were treated with various doses of alcohol and Ancylostoma caninum larvae. Mice which received 40% alcohol for 20 days showed a significant decrease in body weight and in the number of leucocytes. Eosinophilia was also observed in mice which were treated with 40% alcohol for 20 days.

Parasitic diseases. Other roundworms. Trichuris, hookworm, and Strongyloides.

Trichuriasis may be asymptomatic or, in heavy infection, lead to profuse, bloody diarrhea and rectal prolapse. Diagnosis is made by finding the distinctive barrel shaped eggs in the stool or in the heavily infested patient, by anoscopy and identification of worms attached to reddened and ulcerated rectal mucosa. Mebendazole is the drug of choice in treatment. Capillariasis, a parasitic infection encountered mainly in the Philippine Islands, is of interest in that the eggs may be confused with the eggs of trichuris. Hookworm disease is generally asymptomatic, but in heavy infection, leads to ir

Gonadectomy and survival of Ancylostoma caninum (Nematoda) filariform larvae in mice.

Gonadectomy reversed the susceptibility response of male and female Swiss mice to Ancylostoma caninum infection. Orchiectomy decreased the survival of filariform larvae (p greater than 0.001 to less than 0.25), whereas ovariectomy increased it significantly (p greater than 0.001 to less than 0.01).
