Interventions preventing ankle sprains; previous injury and high-risk sport participation as predictors of compliance.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the association between participants' person-related potential predictor variables and cumulative compliance with interventions for preventing ankle sprains: neuromuscular training, wearing an ankle brace, and a combined training and bracing. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of compliance data from a randomized controlled trial (RCT) comparing measures preventing ankle ligament injuries. METHODS: Ordinal regression with a backward selection method was used to obtain a descriptive statistical model linking participants' person-related potential predictor variables with the m

Ankle syndesmotic fixation using two screws: risk of injury to the perforating branch of the peroneal artery.

Trans-syndesmotic screws are commonly used to repair syndesmosis ruptures and stabilize the ankle joint. Just as with any surgery, the neurovascular structures can be compromised, causing complications. We evaluated the position of the perforating branch of the peroneal artery to define the risk of arterial compromise during placement of 2 trans-syndesmotic screws. In 37 cadaveric specimens, 2 trans-syndesmotic screws were inserted 2 and 4 cm proximal to the ankle joint. The distances between the perforating branch of the peroneal artery and the screws and the other anatomic landmarks were mea

Comparison of magnetic resonance imaging to physical examination for syndesmotic injury after lateral ankle sprain.

BACKGROUND: Clinical assessment of syndesmotic injury usually consists of two tests: the ankle external rotation test and squeeze test. This study sought to determine the sensitivity and specificity of both for syndesmotic injury secondary to lateral ankle sprain. METHODS: Fifty-six patients with sprained ankles underwent clinical examination for syndesmotic injury with the aforementioned tests. Clinical findings were compared against magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the ankle. Sprains were graded on anatomical and functional classification scales, and correlation and agreement between bot

Deep peroneal nerve injury following external fixation of the ankle: case report and anatomic study.

BACKGROUND: We present a case of deep peroneal nerve injury after application of external fixator and conducted a cadaveric study of the relationship of the deep peroneal nerve to the lateral tibial cortex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case of toe drop after application of the external fixator is reported. Twelve cadaveric lower legs were dissected to identify the course of the deep peroneal nerve. The tibia were divided into four Zones with equal length. The course of the nerve through each Zone of the tibia was studied Result: In Zone 1, the deep peroneal nerve went around the fibular neck and

Feedback and feedforward locomotor adaptations to ankle-foot load in people with incomplete spinal cord injury.

Humans with spinal cord injury (SCI) modulate locomotor output in response to limb load. Understanding the neural control mechanisms responsible for locomotor adaptation could provide a framework for selecting effective interventions. We quantified feedback and feedforward locomotor adaptations to limb load modulations in people with incomplete SCI. While subjects airstepped (stepping performed with kinematic assistance and 100% bodyweight support), a powered-orthosis created a dorisflexor torque during the "stance phase" of select steps producing highly controlled ankle-load perturbations. Pseudo-aneurysm of the anterior tibial artery, a rare cause of ankle swelling following a sports injury.

BACKGROUND: Ankle pain and swelling following sports injuries are common presenting complaints to the accident and emergency department. Frequently these are diagnosed as musculoskeletal injuries, even when no definitive cause is found. Vascular injuries following trauma are uncommon and are an extremely rare cause of ankle swelling and pain. These injuries may however be limb threatening and are important to diagnose early, in order that appropriate treatment can be delivered. We highlight the steps to diagnosis of these injuries, and methods of managing these injuries. It is important for cl

[CBO-guideline for diagnosis and treatment of the acute ankle injury. National organization for quality assurance in hospitals].

Following an acute ankle inversion trauma, the aim of the diagnostic strategy is to rule out a fracture and/or lateral ankle ligament rupture. Plain X-rays are indicated when weightbearing is impossible (the patient cannot take at least four steps) and/or if there is pain on palpation on the posterior aspect of the lateral or medial malleolus. This applies to the period directly following the trauma as well as 4-5 days later. In the first forty-eight hours after trauma, physical examination cannot distinguish between a distortion and a lateral ligament rupture. In a patient with a painful swol

Invertor vs. evertor peak torque and power deficiencies associated with lateral ankle ligament injury.

Strengthening of the evertor muscles is widely advocated as a key component of lateral ankle sprain rehabilitation, but our clinical observation of impaired invertor muscle performance among many patients suggested the need for this study of isokinetic performance deficiencies. Subjects were 30 physically active adolescents, ages 14-19 years, who had recently sustained a lateral ankle sprain or who had symptoms of chronic lateral ankle instability. Eversion/inversion testing was performed on a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer at speeds of 30 and 120 degrees/sec. Analysis of variance results demon

A meningeal cyst of the thoracic spine presenting as prolonged paresis after ankle injury: case report.

A case of a thoracic meningeal cyst causing right lower extremity weakness in a fifteen-year-old girl is presented. The diagnosis was delayed due to a history of ankle injury which was initially used to explain her symptoms. The authors explain the difficulty in diagnosing intraspinal meningeal cysts and stress the importance of surgical excision before spinal cord injury progresses.

Use of Bio-inductive Collagen Scaffold Graft to Repair Complex Soft Tissue Injuries to the Foot and Ankle: A Multi-Case Report.

Tendon and ligament tears are common and disabling musculoskeletal injuries. Chronic injury tends to occur in 15% to 48% of cases leading to surgical management after failed conservative care. Once soft tissues integrity is disrupted, the body begins to form scar tissue, which is inferior to a healthy tissue and demonstrates a lack of tensile strength and a stiffening that diminishes the range of motion. The main goal of surgical repair of tendons and ligaments is to restore anatomic structure and function. We follow 2 patients with complex soft tissue injuries treated with direct repair using

A clinical guide to the medial ligaments of the ankle: Anatomy, function, diagnosis of injuries and treatment of instability-a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to provide an update on anatomy and function of the medial ankle ligaments, diagnosis of their injuries and treatment of medial ankle instability. METHODS: Literature search on PubMed. RESULTS: Injuries to the deltoid ligament are not uncommon in relation to malleolar fractures and ankle sprains. Chronic instability may lead to ankle osteoarthritis. However, there is no consensus on diagnostic criteria (clinically, by imaging and by arthroscopy), on indications for non-operative and operative treatment, and on standards for repair and reconstruction of the ligament co

Better outcomes using suture button compared to screw fixation in talofibular syndesmotic injuries of the ankle: a level I evidence-based meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The present meta-analysis evaluated current level I clinical trials which compared the use of a suture button (SB) versus syndesmotic screw (SS) fixation techniques for syndesmosis injuries of the ankle. The outcomes of interest were to compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and complications. It was hypothesised that SB might achieve better PROMs along with a lower rate of complications. METHODS: This study was conducted according to the 2020 PRISMA statement. In August 2023, PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase were accessed. All the randomised control
