Aedes aegypti (L.) is the primary vector of dengue, yellow fever, Zika, and chikungunya viruses, whereas Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (Theobald) is the principal vector for malaria in Latin America. The larval stage of these mosquitoes occurs in very different development habitats, and the study of their respective behaviors could give us valuable information to improve larval control. The aim of this study was to set up a bioassay to study basic larval behaviors using a video-tracking software. Larvae of An. pseudopunctipennis came from two localities in Salta Province, Argentina, while Ae. a…

Pyrethroid resistant malaria vectors are widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa and new insecticides with different modes of action are urgently needed. Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone mimic that reduces fecundity and fertility of adult Anopheles mosquitoes when used as a contact insecticide. A long-lasting insecticidal net incorporating pyriproxyfen is under development. As wild, host-seeking females may succeed in blood-feeding at different intervals after initial contact with mosquito nets the aim of this study was to determine the effect that age and gonotrophic status (nulliparous or…

Mosquitoes of the Anopheles (An) и Aedes (Ee.)

Unraveling selective forces that shape vector-parasite interactions has critical implications for malaria control. However, it remains unclear whether Plasmodium infection induces a fitness cost to their natural mosquito vectors. Moreover, environmental conditions are known to affect infection outcome and may impact the effect of infection on mosquito fitness. We investigated in the laboratory the effects of exposition to and infection by field isolates of Plasmodium falciparum on fecundity and survival of a major vector in the field, Anopheles coluzzii under different conditions of access to …

BACKGROUND: Due to the development of resistance to synthetic insecticides, adverse effects to human health, non-target organisms and the environment, there is an urgent need to develop new insecticides, which are effective, safe, biodegrable and target-specific. This study was undertaken to evaluate the adulticidal activity of 10 plants used traditionally as mosquito repellents in South Africa.
METHODS: The dried plant materials were extracted with dichloromethane (DCM) and ethanol (EtOH). The extracts were evaluated for adulticidal activity against Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes, a potent …

The ability to invade tissues is a unique characteristic of the malaria stages that develop/differentiate within the mosquitoes (ookinetes and sporozoites). On the other hand, tissue invasion by many pathogens has often been associated with increased matrix metalloprotease (MMP) activity in the invaded tissues. By employing cell biology and reverse genetics, we studied the expression and explored putative functions of one of the three MMPs encoded in the genome of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae, namely, the Anopheles gambiae MMP1 (AgMMP1) gene, during the processes of blood digestion, mi…

BACKGROUND: Anopheles stephensi is a competent malaria vector mainly present in southern Asia and the Arabian Peninsula. Since 2012, it has invaded several countries of eastern Africa, creating an emerging risk of urban transmission. Urgent efforts are required to develop novel and more efficient strategies for targeted vector control. CRISPR/Cas9-based homing gene drives have been proposed as attractive alternative strategies. Gene drives have the potential to spread a desired trait through a population at higher rates than via normal Mendelian inheritance, even in the presence of a fitness c…

The characterization of non-retroviral integrated RNA virus sequences (NIRVS) in mosquitoes has emerged as a significant area of research that could yield insight into virus-host interactions. This study aimed to characterize NIRVS in the Anopheles darlingi reference genome and identify putative transcribed NIRVS in field-collected mosquitoes from Colombia. The An. darlingi reference genome was analyzed to identify and characterize NIRVS by conducting a BLAST query with all the virus sequences previously identified in arthropods available in the NCBI-virus repository. In addition, An. darlingi…

BACKGROUND: Investigating the species distribution and their role in malaria transmission is important as it varies from place to place and is highly needed to design interventions appropriate to the site. The current study aimed to investigate the Anopheles mosquito species distribution and their infection rate in southwestern Ethiopia.
METHODS: The study was conducted in 14 malaria-endemic kebeles (the smallest administrative unit), which were situated in eight different malaria-endemic districts and four zones in southwestern Ethiopia. Ten per cent of households in each village were visite…

Anopheles darlingi is the primary malaria vector in the Amazon region and is highly susceptible to both Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum parasites. Although anopheline mosquitoes may develop melanotic encapsulation in response to Plasmodium parasites, there is no record of An. darlingi exhibiting a melanization response to P. vivax, the main malaria parasite in the Americas. Here, we report the occurrence of P. vivax sporozoite melanization in An. darlingi mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes are responsible for tremendous global health burdens from their transmission of pathogens causing malaria, lymphatic filariasis, dengue, and yellow fever. Innovative vector control strategies will help to reduce the prevalence of these diseases. Mass rearing of mosquitoes for research and support of these strategies presently depends on meals of vertebrate blood, which is subject to acquisition, handling, and storage issues. Various blood-free replacements have been formulated for these mosquitoes, but none of these replacements are in wide use, and l…

BACKGROUND: The decision to imbibe a blood meal is predominantly dependent on the sensitivity and specificity of haematophagous arthropods to blood-derived adenine nucleotides, in particular adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Despite previous efforts to identify and characterise the specificity and sensitivity to ATP and other adenine nucleotides, as well as the role of other blood-derived phagostimulants across the Culicidae, comparisons across species remain difficult.
METHODS: The feeding response of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti and the African malaria vector Anopheles gambiae to ade…

Anopheles stephensi invasion in the Horn of Africa (HoA) poses a substantial risk of increased malaria disease burden in the region. An understanding of the history of introduction(s), establishment(s) and potential A. stephensi sources in the HoA is needed to predict future expansions and establish where they may be effectively controlled. To this end, we take a landscape genomic approach to assess A. stephensi origins and spread throughout the HoA, information essential for vector control. Specifically, we assayed 2070 genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms across 214 samples spanning 1…

BACKGROUND: Children in Kenya spend a substantial amount of time at school, including at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are active. With changing vector behaviour towards early morning biting, it is important to determine whether there is an additional risk of transmission in schools. This study sought to understand whether late morning biting by Anopheles funestus, previously documented in households in western Kenya, was replicated in schools.
METHODS: From the 4th to the 6th of August 2023, human landing collections were conducted hourly in four schools in Alego Usonga sub-County, Siaya Cou…

BACKGROUND: To develop an effective malaria vector intervention method in forested international border regions within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), more in-depth studies should be conducted on local Anopheles species composition and bionomic features. There is a paucity of comprehensive surveys of biodiversity integrating morphological and molecular species identification conducted within the border of Laos and Cambodia.
METHODS: A total of 2394 adult mosquitoes were trapped in the Cambodia-Laos border region. We first performed morphological identification of Anopheles mosquitoes and …
